Fatal Motorcycle Crash Leads To Shooting In Newark
Police Trying To Figure Out What Led To Shooting After Accident

Jay Dow
Reporting
(CBS) NEW YORK Police in Newark are investigating what looks like a case of vigilantism. This comes after a deadly motorcycle accident leads to a shooting on a Newark street.

Newark police say 28-year-old Maleak Williams did not have time to react as he cruised down Irvine Turner
Boulevard on his motorcycle yesterday evening.

According to an eyewitness, the crime that occurred in the moments following his fatal accident was clearly premeditated.

"He got on with his cell phone, like he was trying to call for police or something and as he did that, they shot him. And he fell right down beside the guy," said the eyewitness, who would not give his name.

Newark detectives say just moments before, the man who was shot was in the process of making a u-turn in his car on Irvine Turner boulevard.

They say before the man could get his car going, Williams, riding his motorcycle, smashed into the rear of the car.

Williams, a father of three who recently moved to Pennsylvania with his family, was thrown off the bike and died on the scene.

"The family is; they're doing as well as can be expected. It's hard for' em. It's hard for everybody," said Williams’ cousin Gregory Younger.

According to an unnamed witness who claimed to be a friend of the driver who was shot, this does not come as a surprise in this area.

"It really is rough like that around here. They walk around with guns on their hips,” she said.

The driver of the car is currently listed in fair condition at University Hospital.

Witnesses and friends of Williams say that he grew up in an apartment building just a half a block away from where he died.

While detectives continue to investigate what they say appears to be a case of street vigilantism, Williams’ relatives are making funeral arrangements.

I was trying to find a better article about this, but couldn't find one.
The car ran into the bike while doing a U-turn.
When the driver got out of the car, an uninvolved bystander shot him.

Driver shot after fatal crash with biker

Associated Press

NEWARK, N.J. - A motorist involved in a collision that killed a motorcyclist was shot and wounded as he got out of his car to check on the motorcyclist's condition, Newark police said.

The motorist was trying to make a U-turn Wednesday night when his vehicle was hit broadside by the motorcycle, said Detective Todd McClendon.

The motorcyclist was thrown from the bike and fatally injured. He was identified as Maleak Williams of Newark.

As the driver got out of his car, a man approached, fired several shots at him and ran off, McClendon said.

The shooter, who had been nearby and saw the accident, remained at large yesterday, Capt. Derek Glenn said.

"Even though he wasn't involved, it's much like an incident of road rage," Glenn said, adding that the shooting is considered to be an isolated incident. "He saw a friend of his severely injured, fatally injured, and reacted in response to that by shooting at the person responsible."

The motorist was hospitalized for treatment of wounds that were not believed to be life-threatening, Glenn said.

Glenn said no charges had been filed in connection with the accident, adding that the matter will be presented to a grand jury.
