Title: 286 kph speeding ticket
Post by: Bazza on May 05, 2005, 04:47:55 PM
I met a local folk hero yesterday at bike night, who received a 286 kph speeding ticket in what I belive is a 60 kph zone here in Edmonton. All accounts say it was quite a chase, as he was out running the police helicopter. In the end, the boys in blue won. This was the highest speeding vehicle ever clocked in the city.

I am not sure of the bike type, but needless to say it was not a Bandit.

This happened last year and the fellow is still walking due to paying off his legal bills thankfully.

And you wonder why some people hate motorcycles!

I don't know... if your cops are as good as ours, it could've been, if a stock RC51 can do 205 mph "clocked" by an airplane, maybe even a '67 Honda Super 90 could do 286kph.

Excellent! Now I have in writing, the top speed of my second bike, the illustrious S-90. I know it always seemed fast back then!  :beers:

There was no KPH though, I believe McCarthy still had those outlawed within our sovereign borders.

Actually, I believe that a faired B12, perhaps with added lower fairing might do this speed. It would also need the full treatment:
ie. Holshot stage two kit, new exhaust from the block onward, drilled airbox, maybe a piston kit with raised compression, with or without overbore and GSXR cams of course.

Actually, with all that stuff it dam well outa do this speed.

What does a drilled airbox have to do with the Holeshot stage 2? Why not wish up some NOS or a turbo?

Now my S-90 had Mom's vacuum cleaner pipe, balony cut, clamped on the header and it was red!

I think that my Bandit will do about 185 mph at 10,500 rpms in 5th gear. If you look at my dyno, you will see that I am still at 154 rwhp at 10,500. 155 HP was 1 horse power higher than any of the Busas that they dynoed the day mine was dynoed. The tech said that he had done several that day, all basically stock. I was leading the HP shootout until my buddy pulled his 1300 cc ZRX stroker motor bike on, he did 171 RWHP.

Sorry, my grammar wasn't quite right. :duh:  What I was trying to present was a menu of mods that could reconvert the Bandit, back to something like its GSXR origins and state of tune. Some of these choices pre-empt others.
I have read a road report on the Australian 1400cc version of the Bandit and it has nary a pony over our stockers. Obviously, more are there in both cases if you can get around the government and factory shackles on their potential.
Still, there are limits. GSXR exhaust? cams greatly limit low end torque. I asume both could sigificantly drop gas mileage. Perhaps not so important for sprinters, but impractical for tourers or long range comuters.
Turbos and some other mods, could mean more trouble with maintenance where there is no longer clearance to fix a mundane problem.

Pretty serious stuff there BH  :congrats:

Mike, I used to have my doubts about turbos. After putting over a quarter million miles on a 626 turbo with no turbo problems, and owning a Seca 650 turbo for a few years (no turbo problems, it could spin a cluth loose though) I  am of the opinion that if it is a good part, and properly installed, run with lots of fresh oil, and warmed up & cooled down properly - it's gonna last.

Besides, anyone with a HS stage 2 can drill holes in their airbox if they want to right?   :bigok:

My reply:
I'll take your word on the holes. I haven't done the Holshot thing for previously "low end torque and mileage" mentioned reasons.

I agree that factory engineered turbos are A OK. It's the Bucky Beaver weekend! kits that I was refering to. My main point there was that even if it works, you may have to take some to much of this stuff off to get at various bits normally accessable but now non wrenchable. Wheelies to kill at 100mph are another story.

Re: Turbos
Some Nostalgia which reveal my geezerness.
I was never much of a student, but when I managed to graduate from grade 13, (Ontario),.... with an A and 2 B's, (and much less).
My parents were so astonished that they decided that some form of reward was in order, ie. Mom's replacement car which I drove more than she did.
I derided the GM econo 3'sp auto 6 banger choice as no better than the current VW bug.
So.... Out we go to a seldom used highway with the demo & the bug.
Dad pulled out foot matted, with me behind. I slam shifted since I knew he could not hear it and dam near kept up. End of argument.
Long story, but Dad turned up with a Corvair Monza Spyder, (Turbo).
Now THAT was a young man's wet dream, in those days.
It shed fan belts regulary and we carried spares with wrench. As you mentioned, Turbos WORK with good engineering.
The Corvair Spyder, for it's time, was a sleeper/screamer.
Opposed 6 cyl, 4 on floor and cornered like a cat, (Ralph Nader be damed).
It is the ONLY time in my life that I outran, (evaded?), a cop car, albeit that I didn't know he was on my tail. If anyone is still awake & interested, I will chronicle the tale.

cool story fellow geezer. I was thinking of the drilled airbox serving as a planter.,  :stickpoke:

I should also point out that where he got caught was no expressway, but a curvey 4 lane road through the centre of town.

Then mine want do 185 mph, I am afraid of curves. I have to have stright road for high speed runs.

Yup, since most Holeshot Stage II's ditch the airbox.
(Unless you opt for the lower HP SII airbox kit)

I haven't turned my airbox into a planter yet - just a dust collector in the garage.
