Title: AAA!!!!!
Post by: billster on October 04, 2005, 10:10:30 PM
My son and I planned a 200 mi. trip thru the vineyard country of Long Island and was cut short when the gen. quit charging on the R100S and the battery died in the middle of the Long Island Expressway.  (How this happened is totally explainable but a bit long in explanation here.)

Long story short:  he's been paying dues to AAA for years.  Finally gets a chance to get some help from them...needed a flatbed home.  'WE DON'T COVER MOTORCYCLES!!!"  That's it.  Short story.  If you've got AAA, check it out before you need 'em.  Bummer.  $200 for flatbed 40miles.

Would have been cheaper to go rent a pickup from the nearest U-Haul outfit... they're only $19.95/day + mileage around here. Same price as their little cube trucks, in the event they're out of pickups.

Damn, that sucks!

Right now, I have AMA's Motow program, but will probably switch to Allstate's plan when this runs out.  Supposedly, they have much better coverage.

I have a friend out in LI who's an insurance agent should you want to sign up for either.  PM me and I'll send the info over to you.  Even if it's never needed, it's worth having the peace of mind.

Over here in cal they Do cover motorcycle and rv tows.  It costs a few bucks more a year.  They send you a new card that has a Rv\motorcycle designation on it.  I have it!

AAA will haul bikes but you have to have the upgraded policy.  Its called RV+.  I got the RV+ because I haul a camper and tow a boat.  I got looking at the policy and bikes are covered.  Its about $150 per year.  If you don't have an RV I'm sure there's cheaper coverages out there (the AMA has some programs).

Just checked with the wifey and to add the rv+ on to the regular aaa membership  was only another 35 bucks on top of the 60 or so for the standard tow coverage.  Might vary state to state.

KOA/Allstate (http://www.koa.com/rvroadhelp/) charges $79.95/year and covers your owned, leased, rented or borrowed RV, car, motorcycle, trailer, boat... seems like a pretty good plan for those that want that kind of coverage.

Thanks, guys.  Forwarded this thread to him for his information.  Thinking about rejoining AMA anyway.  Used to be VERY active in our district in the 70's.  Lots benefits.

Cheers

Title: Bike Towing
Post by: SHREDDER on October 12, 2005, 05:29:55 PM
I used to be a member of Amoco Motor Club.  The one time I actually needed them when my bandit broke down, they said they could not find a towing company in my area that would tow bikes.  They were useless.  Thank god I was able to limp my bike the 3 miles back home.

Thanks, Shredder.  At least 3 mi. you could throw a rope around the forks and get a slow pull home.
