Rode Angeles Crest for only the second time since moving to L.A. and the first time in a long time - and boy howdy is that a great run. Great surface, long sweepers, good visibility, not too steep an incline, not too busy. I couldn't get the smile off my face and the thought out of my head that I should come up here more often.
If you are in the L.A. area this has got to be one of the best places to ride.

Yep! Mulholland (sp) drive is awesome as well. Just take it North out of the city. Just don't go too fast by the houses, I'm sure they don't like that.

I am fortunate to live very near Mullholland and ride those canyons quite a bit, but for my money the extra drive out to Angeles Crest is well worth it.
I find the Santa Monica Mountains (which is where the Mullholland Hwy runs through) to be too tight and the road to chewed up. Though I do enjoy stopping by the bike store where I have had the pleasure of seeing both Jay Leno and that guy Jacque (sp?) (Jacque is that guy who road his Honda sport bike or some other sort around the world - he's on the internets somewhere)
Hey James, if you're ever out Los Angeles way again and you need a riding partner just drop me a line here on the board.

Be carefull on the weekends, from what I hear on other forums the CHP really patrols up there and will write you up for any infraction or visiable modified part on your bike.

The CREST is a nice road BUT waaaay too heavily patrolled and there is ZERO tolerance up there ........I know guys who got tickets for 3 miles over the limit, crap like that!!
There are some great roads in Southwest Rivrside and San Diego Counties BLK.....the 74 and 243 near IDYLLWILD are great roads...the 243 from Banning off the 10 is one of the BEST roads in So Cal to ride and I rarely see any LEO's on it.
If you want to try some new roads call me.............(951) 218-0501....I can usually ride most Saturdays.

Good call on that. I am well aware of the notorious and somewhat dubious CHiP's up there. One of their favorite things to cite you for are noise violations and they base that soley on whether or not you have a stock exhaust on your bike. Total BS. As a matter of fact that is what made me think to go up this past weekend. I recently put my stock muffler back onto my bike and thought heck, since it's on might as well head to the Crest.
There is one patrolman in particular, officer Stout I believe his name is, who is a real hard ass. Good thing he is out of commission half the time. Seriously, this guy has gone down at least three times that I know of in recent memory. You would think that a CHP motorcyle cop would be a better rider but I suppose it's do as I say not as I do.

The one reason I won't go up there on the weekends anymore Stout nailed a guy for going to slow (45 in a 55) and nailed another guy for having an after market wind screen on his Buell. :duh:

Mongo:
Are you f**King serious? How are those tickets even legal. Maybe the too slow one but the after market wind screen? How the hell?
I have a friend of mine coming down from Portland to ride with me and now I have to seriously consider whether or not I want to take him up there.
I had a buddy get busted for his exhaust being too loud so he showed up to his hearing with a VU meter. (He is an audio engineer for some MTV show). The judge asked hime what that was, he told him and then told the judge that the bike is right outside and he would be more than happy to test it in front of his honor. The judge said that wouldn't be necessary. The citation was dismissed.

45 in a 55 was considered an obstruction of traffic and the guy on the Buell had some funky colored red wind screen that was altered from stock so he got him for obstructed vision?
:annoy:

That is just insane and completely frustrating.
I was up there this past Sunday (Father's Day) and saw only one L.E.O. Maybe it was because it was father's day or maybe I was just lucky. We were charging around there pretty good. Not too fast but certainly over the speed limit and certainly well within ticketable speeds.

Hey Bandit1250,
I am also local to you, I live in La Quinta and love to ride all the roads you stated. Have you ever ridden down through 7 hills? It is the base of Hwy 74 as it comes into Palm Desert. It is very nice and smooth and you can go at a good clip barring cages.
If you would like to hook up for a ride, please feel free to call me and if I am not working, I will ride. 760-314-7042

The one for going to slow, unless the guy had a problem, I am glad he did. Especially if the guy was not using turn outs. Going to slow is as if not more dangerous as going to fast. But the one for the windscreen, that is BS as then can actually benifit rider safety.

OK....you just want to come out this way early to beat the traffic but that's nice when it's warm anyway.....we usually meet no later than 8am, so If you live in LA County you'll want to leave your place no later than 7am or so.

Sounds good Bill......I may be up for a ride this Saturday in the Idyllwild area......I like to meet at the SHELL station at the bottom of the 74 in East HEMET...it's the last gas station before you head up the mountain.
