2 Weatherly Residents Injured When Bear Hits Motorcycle

PACKER TOWNSHIP

Two Weatherly residents were flown to trauma centers Monday after a bear hit their motorcycle, causing it to crash.

Jeffrey Herlling was driving the motorcycle on S. Lehigh Gorge Road at Stage Coach Road in Packer Township at 1:25 p.m. when the bear ran across the road and hit the front of the bike, causing Herlling to lose control, said state police at Hazleton.

Herlling was flown to St. Luke's Hospital in Fountain Hill, police said. His passenger, Rachael Maleski, was taken to Hazleton General Hospital and then flown to an area trauma center.

The bear continued running into the woods after the accident.

Information on Herlling's and Maleski's conditions were not available late Monday. State police said they were not wearing helmets at the time of the crash.
