Is this a good price?
« on: June 09, 2005, 12:37:13 PM »
Hi I'm about to get a 96 Bandit 600 with things listed below and wondering if $2000 is a fair price for it considering its summer time and I'm really can't wait to get a bike or should I wait...Thanks

- New tires , chain , sprocket, air filter
-New K&N air filter
-hole shot performance exhaust pipe
- Just had full service tune up done **0 Miles since**
-Fresh fluid change (oil and brake)
-Valves were just adjusted
-performance jet kit
-11k miles
-Salvage title due to theft recovery

by the way the bikes look very clean.

That doesn't sound 'bad', except for the salvage title, part.

I think a lot depends on the state, but some of the requirements for salvage titles vary quite a bit.
The bike could be pieced together from a bunch of wrecked bikes, or stolen, and recovered, as they suggest.

I'd at least pay for an INDEPENDENT (Not associated with the seller) motorcycle mechanic to look at it before you buy it, or at least a buddy who knows a lot about bikes.
IF you can get the VIN number of the bike, it's also possible to trace the vehicle.  This costs $12-15 and you can do it online.
This may not tell you much, either, but it can fill in some gaps.

I bid  on a used bike on ebay, traced the title, and while it didn't tell me much, it sure didn't jive with what the seller was telling me!
(The bike hadn't been registered in years, although his teenage kid had been riding it in the rural area he lived in the whole time.  The bike looked like hell....)

I'd be careful, and maybe offer quite a bit less.

Oh yeah, I'm guessing you can pick up a Bandit 600 of that year with a normal title for around the same money..

I paid $2000 cash for my '00 B6 (faired) just last year. 8000 miles, Kerker exhaust, and a clean title. Bought from the original owner, too.

The bike is actually from a motorcycle shop  and I was told that they knew the history of the bike because the original owner regulary brings the bike to them for maintenance and was stolen and recovered and left in their shop.  The original price was $2500 and I got it down to $2000, prices here in California is a little bit high than anywhere else so I'm really torn should I get it or wait when a better deal comes around.  This bikeless days are driving insane :)

Are they selling it 'as is'?
Maybe you can talk them into a 30 day 'warranty' or something.....at least on the engine.

It's probably not a bad deal......

I'm a little leery of salvage titles.  I think you can never get a normal title for the bike once it's been issued a salvage title.
The bike may be pristine, and worth the $$, but the resale value is reduced by the salvage title.

If you plan on riding the bike for 2-3 years or more, it's not a big deal.

I just checked NADA prices for the Santa Ana, CA area (the only CA zip code I knew off the top of my head) and it gives a low retail of $1515 and an average retail of $1990. With a salvage title on what sounds like an average, well maintained, bike, I wouldn't give average retail price. A salvage title is a black eye (regardless of how the bike got it) that will always have a detrimental effect on the bike's worth.
