Bike stripped of $7,000 in parts under officers' noses
Motorcycle was upstairs; theft may have occurred Sunday
By Sherri Drake
The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal/August 17, 2005
Investigators aren't quite sure how someone slipped into the West Precinct over the weekend and stripped a Memphis police motorcycle of nearly everything but the front tire.
Monday, officers noticed the Harley-Davidson in its usual spot, parked in the upstairs storage/weight room, but missing its engine, transmission, gas tank and back tire.
The Harley, which had previously been damaged, was being stored for parts in the weight room above the precinct at 1925 Union, said Maj. C. B. Williams with the Auto Theft Bureau.
Harley professionals said it might've taken the thief hours to steal the parts, valued at more than $7,000.
Police think the thief might've swiped the stuff about 10 p.m. Sunday, but aren't sure who it is or how it was done. Technicians dusted for fingerprints around the precinct.
There's a staircase that leads up to the room, which usually isn't locked.
Williams said the time it took to get the parts from the bike depends on the thief's knowledge and experience.
"We don't have any suspects at this point," she said.
Internal Affairs officials said Tuesday that the case hasn't been passed to investigators, though that would happen if an officer becomes a suspect.
Williams said she can't say who would have the nerve to steal police belongings right out from under officers' noses.
"I don't want to speculate or anything," she said. "Perhaps our investigation will turn up something."

If it were my investigation, I would definitly be looking "in house" for the criminal, that's for sure. Lets see if the criminal is dumb enough to post the parts on ebay! Regardless, that has to be an embaressment for the police department. :duh:

Good gawd, $7000 in parts from a wrecked Harley.
They must have taken everything except the oil leak......

Looks like the parts Kawasaki in the background was left untouched.

Thanks, sven, for sharing that. I was going to post about it when I got back to work today. How M-barassin'!!
Typical of hte Memphis Police Dept., though. If the thief/rapist/murderer ain't in a speeding car or walking a street corner, odds are they aren't going to catch them unless someone narcs on them. Seriously.
Lucky for us, Crimestoppers pays a reward for tattling, and the ghetto ain't rich (yet).

Anything about Harley Professionals sound funny to any of you? I was on motors for six years and never met one
Really $7000 from a Harley is easy to do if you’re going by dealer prices and not factory. Remember the old joke, what does HD stand for on all the Harley stuff? "Hundred Dollars" :toofunny:

thank god they striped the worthless bike and left the good parts bike alone! sounds like a hd rider had a lot of parts fall off and couldn't pay for new ones! but the way i had to dodge my buddys bat. strap off his sporty/village people bike on a ride just the other day! i'm sooooo impressed with hd's in the first place, but having to dodge their parts on the road makes me wish i had bought one! when will people stop buy'n the hd's are the best bike and if you don't own one you wouldn't understand crap?

At least it's quiet.
I followed one at 150 feet back lately. I could not hear my own motorcycle for the usual straightpipes.

I know enough that I am not going to pay a ton of money for a status symbol. That is basically what you are paying for, not top of the line craftmanship. I also understand that I am not interested in cruisers either. So what more is there for me to understand? :stickpoke:
