Rear Turn Signal Replacement Ideas?
« on: September 28, 2005, 12:59:36 AM »
So I recieved my Givi hard bags and tubular mounting rack for my 01' and proceed to do a fitment test. Where Givi has relocated the mounting for the turn signals is about 4.5 inches away(rearward) from the bags and looks pretty ugly IMO. So my thoughts are buying a clear alternatives integrated tail light/turnsignal setup, a rear turn signal which is shorter in length and mounts in the stock location or if the stock turn signal is a 2 piece design I would modify it so that it is at least an inch shorter in overall length and not be obstructed by the tubular rack and then modify the Givi rack by removing their turn signal mount to give it a cleaner look. I am not sure if the integrated tail light is legal in California or DOT approved. Any ideas?

I don't think I've seen an integrated tail light setup on a Bandit, but some I've seen on other sportbikes kind of scare me!
Some don't really offer any 'definition' of the separate stop, and turn signal functions.   HArd to explain, but if you're behind some of these bikes, it's hard to tell if the tail light is just flickering, or if the guy is stopping, or turning....

Check out the "cateyes" on Dale Walkers holeshot performance site. They are quite a bit smaller than the stock signal but are still bright enough to stand out. I installed a full set on my bandit and am really happy with them.
I think they are in the "street fighter" section.

The Lockhart Phillips "cateyes" are OK. I had them for a while, but I thought they looked kinda plain and cheap.
One day while in the local Cycle Gear store (they have an on-line one, too) I happened across a line of blinkers (and other goodies) from MoTrax out of the UK. Their blinkers were about the same size (use the same bulbs as the LP stuff), but they had nicer finishes and shapes. I went with arrow shaped ones in carbon fiber look with an iridum lens. Since then, MoTrax (as well as LP and others) have come out with LED blinkers in cool styles. The LED ones cost about double, but should be worth it since you shouldn't have to change a bulb... and the incandescent bulbs used in the mini signals can usually only be found at a m/c shop, which means the replacements are gonna cost you when they burn out - and they will. I've been averaging one bulb a year and I only have them on the back... FWIW, the front OEM bulbs have never burned out in 4 years and almost 40K miles.

I looked into LEDs also and don't like the directionality of the light. That is they are bright as hell head on but even at slight angles they lose their added light. LEDs are getting better in this respect but that being said i do have LED tail/brake lights. I don't think theres as much of a need for high angle light from the brake light YMMV.
My lights aren't old enough to have an issue with bulb life (crosses fingers)
hopefully They won't be too bad. IF mine have the same issues as yours I may look at other options.

I have an LED intergrated set up on my bike, it's not DOT approved, so not legal for street riding.  Of course I have had cruisers behind me and no problem, doesn't mean it's ok though.

The LED offers the ability to have different colors to help out with setting the two apart.  Amber turn signals and red brake lights, almost legal like.

Here is what I did, they are bright as hell and I think look great.  Not sure if you could put them on a 2g though.

These are HID LED's I mounted in the tail section.  They are very bright and noticeable at any angle.
