Title: dragging a knee on Bandit!
Post by: FreediverGa on October 02, 2005, 10:19:05 PM
Who regularly drags their knee while riding there Bandits?
I'm thinking about trying to drag my knee on my Bandit but not sure if the Bandit is really a good bike to get over enough to even think about drag a knee on my bike!

I don't kneedrag, but it is a technique you can use on anything, even a Road King, because the idea is to use body english to minimize how much you have to lean the bike and therefore carry faster cornering speeds.

Don't know about overseas, but here in Oz, a guy used to race a Bandit (circut road racing).  Was pretty competitive too.  Draged his knee too!

I don't think I've got the balls to drag my knee.  I've always felt that if my toes were scrapping then I'm pushing to hard, and it's time to back off.

I've done it once, but that was just to avoid an idiot who decided to stop for no reason on a long curved onramp. I didn't really think about it at the time, I was more worried about not scraping my helmet on the guardrail. I may have been travelling at, umm, superlegal speeds at the time too :duh: . It's possible, but I wouldn't try to do it again unless it's at a track. I'm lucky I went to the bathroom before I left the bar (was only drinking iced tea and playing pool). Otherwise I would probably have needed new pants

by the way, if anyone's ever in Denver, it's worth going a little out of your way to take the ramp from I-25 south to I-70 westbound. Very smooth, long curve that doesn't get a lot of traffic. Beautiful. and Once you're on 70, keep going up to lookout mountain road, possibly the funnest switchbacks in the state.

This may be a silly question, but do your leathers have knee pucks?  If not, I recommend against it! :stop:

As a rule (for me anyway) if you are going fast enough to NEED to put a knee down, you shouldn't be on a Bandit and you certainly shouldn't be on the street.
I ride with a lot of guys who do track days and race WERA.  They know all about putting a knee down, but never do it on the street.

CAN it be done on a Bandit on the street?  Sure, it's not really that hard once you get a feel for it.  And that's the point really.. it makes your leg into a feeler of sorts.

I will say that a lot of people stick their knee out in turns to look cool, but their body position is all wrong and it makes it obvious to those "in the know" that they are just being squidly.

and it's not nice to stock mounted pegs, to boot !  Unless you plan on replacing them with high mounts.  Uncomfortable, kinda defeats the purpose of the bandit.

I agree with Manny, if Knee dragging, peg scraping, and seeing how far the edge of the tire goes is your interest - buy a gixxer.

I remember seeing that Mike, while we cooked hot dogs on Pete's little grill in the San Ran parking lot.  :bigdrink:
It looked ike you were beginning to scrape the bolt head off the pegs.

BTW, from what I remember "way back when"--> Mike's a great rider and pretty damn fast on the Dagon !

Yeah, Speedytriple Mike ground so much material off the weights screwed to the bottom of the foot pegs that he took the heads of the screws off and couldn't back them out to replace his "feelers"  :bigok:

Maybe if he hung off more, the peg abuse would not have been as bag :stickpoke:

I already put high mounts on my bandit and list of other things to make my bandit lean more toward sport bike than a touring bike like when I bought it!

If I had the money to buy a Gixxer I would have that red and black Gixxer 600 at the stealership I saw a couple weeks ago.  Buttt when I come home after work and  put my leather suit, pull on my helmet, swing a leg over and push that start button.  All I hear is that first healty bark from that Scorpion exhaust and please don't trade me in.   A couple good blips and it's "GAME ON"!

I was draggin'my knee at the track, but never would try it on the road. I have rear sets that touch down and the high mount exhaust can to get it out of harms way. But the 1200 has alot of wieght, and I could definatly tell the difference between conditions on a hot day and a cold day, Your tires need to be in great conditions and so does the tarmac. Make sure you keep your shoulders square and put out your knee and it will touch down. But just remember, if it gets wet(school of hard knocks)or tires are not up to par and you get to that edge, that back tire can slide out without making mistakes in your riding style.

Doesn't matter what I'm riding, I always hang off some in the curves if I'm doing sporty riding, however, I've never drug my knee.  The knee comes close, but has never touched down.  I used to think racers hung off and drug their knees just for show, but I then thought there had to be a reason.  So one day I was riding my bicycle on the driveway with my daughter and I did something that I had done as a kid and just forgot about it.  I stood up on the pedals, shifted my body to the left and made a sharp left U-turn while the bicycle stayed straight up.  Aaahhh!!  The light came on then.  Hanging off allows one to turn sharper without near as much lean angle.  Pretty neat.
