Our biggest bridges all float up here, but we have several elevated freeways & highways that run on top of each other for miles that would be even more disaterous if something like that were to ever happen to one of them. (Think of the 1989 Oakland  earthquale where the I-880 freeway collapsed on top of itself.) (http://www.ladder54.com/photosmisc.htm)

I think Mick is trying to say while he enjoys good natured ribbing of Americans he's also sympathetic to our disasters.  Thanks for the thoughts, Mick.

Yes, Gerty was the original Tacoma Narrows Bridge. (http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/TNBhistory/#4) Gerty's replacement just had a partner bridge opened a few weeks ago... but The Narrows doesn't compare in length to the floating bridges over Lake Washington or Hood Canal. Not to say disaster can't strike a floating bridge, two of them have had a sinking event, but it was during storms when no one was on them.

My prayers go out to those affected by this tragedy.
