Its greed pure and simple, wether you belive the president or his " people"
or if you are for or against whats going on over there. I just happen to belive that the budget for the war and military would have been more than enough for a alternate source to be discovered for fuel for the masses in the USA and what oil we do have could have been to make gas for bikers !!! :beers:

There's no real economic reason for the current prices let alone the annual summer spike.

That's what the rest of the world has been saying for 75 years.

Usually, when you buy in volume you get a discount. We buy an enormous amount of oil, gas etc so we should pay less. I will say we are pretty spoiled. Most families have at least 2 cars and a couple gas powered toys. What alot of people don't realize is we do alot for the rest of the world(although sometimes unwelcomed)so we should get a couple perks. Like it or not, our presence in the middle-east IS keeping things from being blown up and getting rid of the Saddams and Bin Ladens of the world. We will probably never leave Iraq just as we never totally left Germany or Japan. I don't really like it but thats how it is. Our government has made so many deals that we can't just do whats right for us. We have to worry about everyone else too. I think Switzerland has the right idea by staying out of everything. Oh well, its still better here than anywhere else. Thats my little rant/skew anyway :beers:

You know, in China, they say if you're one in a million, there's another million just like you.

We don't know buying in bulk compared to China in the next 10-20 years.

Speaking of desiel, what about these desiel powered motorcycles.  The latest New Zealand motorcycle trader magazine feature an article about one particular make.  Havn't read the article yet but apparently fuel consuption figures are given as about 3 lts of desiel per 100kms.  That has to be fairly cheap commuting.

In the land of Oz it really depends on where you live

In Wagga we're paying around $1.26 for ULP, $1.35 for PULP but go 50k out of town and it's $1.20 or $1.30.  Out in the 'sticks', you can pay $1.35 for ULP - they don't advertise the PULP price, that's assuming they even stock it.

There are a few diesel powered bikes available out there. Here's a link with several choices:

http://www.peace65.freeserve.co.uk/Pictures/currentconversions.htm

But they missed one. Perhaps the one most likely to actually be a commercial success, provided they can bring the price to a reasobale level... the HDT D650, based on their M1030 series military diesel powered bikes currently in service with the armed forces of the US, UK & EU.

http://www.m1030.com/

This bike isn't going to break any speed records with a 0-60mph time of 10.6 seconds and a top speed in the 90's, but for the rider wanting fuel economy, 102 mpg(US) at 55mph is pretty good! That's about what my '66 Suzuki 80 got @ 35-40 mph (it would have been hard pressed to do 55 mph).

I've felt the pain of high diesel prices being an owner of a Ford Superduty.  The demand has really increased for diesel which has pushed the price up, not to mention having to "clean it up" to reduce sulphur emissions.  Whats funny about diesel is the price swings, you can have up to a 30 cent variance from one station to another.  Whats also pushed up prices is that petroleum is now a Wall Street investment.  Its bought and sold on speculation so a gallon is like a share of stock.  Add to this the fact that no additions or upgrades have been made to our refineries since the 70's.  Maintenance and down time are on the increase.

As it turns out the feds icreased the excise taxes on diesel to 24.4-27.5 cents per gallon[cpg]. The states followed suit and increased there taxes on diesel as well. Then, of course, there's the local taxes too. All of these government agencies teamed up to put a whopin on all the 3/4 and 1 tonners out there. Over the road haulers took a serious hit as well.
The reason was supposedely to clean up or pay for diesel emissions{ Yeah, right}.
I've found the lowest tax rate seems to be Georgia @ 7.5 cpg for both gasoline and diesel the highest looks to be Penn. @ 31.1 for gasoline and 35.1 for diesel. Add that to the inflated refinery prices and throw in the federal taxes and Boom! we get more expensive diesel fuel. On the plus side, I have job security working for one of the big guys that raked in $36 BILLION in one quarter. Even as an employee it still pisses me off.

The funny thing about fuel prices and the so called shortages is the fact that all the oil companies are making RECORD profits. We keep being asked to pay more to the oil companies and more in taxes to the goverment (New Zealand). hopfuly all this money is going into looking at alternative fuels etc (yeah right)[/quote]
