Assailants shoot dead village chief

CALASIAO, Pangasinan - Motorcycle-riding assassins gunned down a barangay captain, Saturday dawn, in Pangasinan.

Jaime Bautista, 49, barangay captain of Balingued, Santa Barbara, is the second local official killed in the past week. The first was Esteban Escobar Bedar, barangay captain of Nagpanaoan, Bantay, Ilocos Sur.

Reports reaching the Philippine National Police headquarters in Camp Crame disclosed that Bautista was killed about 2 a.m. on Saturday in Barangay Macabito, Calasiao town.

Investigators disclosed that Bautista, along with a certain Daniel Bacani, had just left the Pangasinan Coliseum onboard a tricycle and was cruising along the provincial road when two men, riding tandem on a motorcycle, zipped past them.

The motorcycle riders waited until the tricycle was at level speed before pulling out a handgun and shot Bautista.

Bautista died instantly from a bullet wound in the left side of his neck. His companion was able to jump off to safety. The gunmen sped away after making the hit.

Investigators are still determining the identities of the assailants and the motive behind the killing.

Assassins onboard a motorcycle shot Bedar with .45-caliber pistol three times in the body.

Bedar had just attended a meeting of the barangay council. He died upon arrival at the Reyes Clinic and Hospital in Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur.
