Gotta love RAM mounts.
« on: December 28, 2008, 11:55:26 PM »
Finally got around to mounting an older GPS unit.  The hardest part was deciding its final placement given all the option the RAM mount gave. I finally settled on tucking it just forward of the brake master cylinder.

Looks good.  Is that a touch screen model?  If so, it might be handier on the other side?

It is, but this is the lest obtrusive location I found for it and I do not plan on messing with it while in motion.  Primary use is to allow day rides with no particular destination then have it point teh way home when I am ready.  That is also why I picked up a used one one the cheap.  No need for an expensive "motorcycle friendly" GPS for simple day riding.

Sounds good.  I mounted mine (a Garmin Quest) on the HB using ram mounts and positioned it above the clutch reservoir.  It doesn't obstruct the view of my guages and easy to access while riding.  The unit I have is much smaller than yours and I have a 1G B-12.

A newer, thinner, smaller unit would be nice, but I got this one in new condition with 2 car mounts, dc power adapter, ac charger and usb cable for $50.  All I need now is a second DC cord to mount permanently on the bike.

I picked up a Magellan Roadmate 2200T about a year and a half ago, also with a Ram mount for then $300 (they're ~$120 now). The nice thing about the 2200T is that it's waterproof to IPX-4 spec, so if you're caught in the rain you can still use it.

I only really pulled mine out if I went down some deep backroads and was low on gas. Punch in the gas database and ride to the nearest station.
