Title: Helmet Performance: Blow'n the lid
Post by: fartndust on July 30, 2005, 07:47:45 PM
O.K..... :stickpoke:
I read this article last month, and I see they have added a response from Snell as well.
I've attached a link to an updated test done on helmets.  Comparing DOT(FMVSS 218) to the European standard (ECE 22-05), Britains Type A (BSI 6658) and Snell (M2000/M2005).

The sum of it is that stiffer composite helmets may not be the best thing for your melon after all...and big bucks doesn't equal best protection either.  This DOT/Snell  arguments has been an issue since I was loading diapers and my Dad did all the riding and new information is always welcomed by myself, and maybe some of you as well.  I posted this on another website and a guy that sells the "high end stuff" was really offended so, in advance...sorry if this chafes your cheeks.  I just feel that knowledge is power, smarter is better, no good argument goes unchallenged, and more expensive doesn't ALWAYS mean better quality...most of the time sure, but alway?

I didn't read the article, but from the quick glance I gave it, it looks like the same one they had in print a few months ago. I think we discussed it back then, too. I think for the extra money of the more premuim brands, you are just getting a nicer fit and finish and better features - like venting and removeable liners... but from the article, it sounds like a helmet that's harder and less likely to give your noggin the cushion it needs in an impact.

:duh:
My bad...I missed the boat.  I recently (last month) purchased a helmet off Ebay from a company called EXL that produces a number of helmet styles.  One being the Modular that I chose...removeable/washable liner,  vented at the front (chin) and at the top (forehead).  It's DOT and ECE 22-05 rated and it was $88 shipped to my door.  It's comfy and matches the B12 nicely.  Makes me hate my HJC's that I own...they cost me plenty more.... O.K., I still like them, I just feel as though maybe I paid too much.
