Hi,
I,m buying a bigger bike(sports) in the next couple of months I,m looking at the R1, GSXR 1000, or Ninja, I'd love to know what you guys think of these bikes(good or bad) or others you could recommend.

Thanks a million.

What I think -  all the race-reps in the liter class are fine bikes and the performance differences so minor as to be negligible. Rider skill is most likely to determine a winner in a race between them. I haven't riden any of them myself, so I can only go by what the media says. From what I've read, the 1K Ninja is the most nevous of the bunch. It doesn't come with a steering damper - and for most riders, could seriously use one. If it was me buying, I'd go for the R1 because I think it's the best looking of the bunch - that, and I'm more partial towards Yamahas and Suzukis than Kwackers and Hondas. I think you should buy the one that speaks to your soul the strongest, regardless of what anyone says.

Slyfox,

I bought the R1 because I think it was the best looking of last years class of liter bikes. It just looks like its going fast when standing still.  For me (5' 10") it was also the most comfortable. But with new Gixxer 1K for '05, I'd have to look hard at that if I were buying this year.

But that Black '05 R1 sure is a beauty

Any of the Jap 1000's are good, there's really not much difference between them.  I've just finished reading a comparo in AMCN between the Jap thousands and the MV 1000.  And the generally concensus was that the Suzuki is the better bike where the rider will 'play' in the real world with the occaisonal track day.  The CBR is the better one for real world, the MV is the most uncomfortable but most desirable, the ZX10 and the R1 were really on par.  But the article really couldn't split them and it came down to personal choice, and which colour turns you on the most.

Assiebandit nailed it on the head.

All of the litre bikes have capabilities of which you will never use on the street. I read somewhere that almost all riders would use only 70% of a modern litre bikes capabilities on the street. This was written by a racer.

Not sure how insurance is, where you live, but rates for the 'superbikes' here in the US can scare you, depending on where you live, and how old you are!

Not sure if you're into V-twins, but the SV1000 models are a real deal here in the US.   Lighter, better handling, (Than a B12) reasonably priced.........
But, if you've got the 'superbike' disease, there's only one cure.... :bigok:

One of the local Aussie bike mags suggested that if you want to ride a sports bike on the road anywhere near it's limits, buy into the 400/600 class or the Ducati 748.

all the road test reports suggest they at the end of the day they are broadly similar and capable of things that we would probably never take them to,the 10r   r1   hondas  gsx1000r,hell igot wasted by a 68hp harley the other day .ithink paul summed it up...something that speaks to you.

your on the BANDIT site
what do you think we would suggest???

your pure sport choices don't really appeal to me BUT, from your list I would pick any of them.

they are very similar so go with the closest dealer or best deal or combination of both.
Title: sport bike

What type of riding do you really do?  Do you do occasional track days?  Sport bikes are cool and cool to look at and the pose factor at the local hangout is good.  Do you like long rides (200 mi +).  I had a sport bike and it was fun but after 150 mi or so you're toast.  Insurance can be an issue as well.  Just some food for thought.  There are some great standards out there, Bandits of course, FZ1, some of the bling, bling Italian bikes are coming down in price too.

to be honest.....on of my riding mates 3 days ago picked up a brand spanking new gsxr1000.we opened the garage door.itold him what a neat bite it was, awesome blue colour.i sat on it,felt like i was stretching my arms out of proportion.my legs were crunched up and my arse was in the air, we chatted about this and that on the bike and agreed it being a run out model it was a deal......AS YOU DO.

Left, got home.went straight to my bike in the downstairs bedroom and sat on my bandit.YIPPEE i thought...did i make a good buying decision or what when this machine spoke to me,it was as good as sneared at by the sports bike team at first but can now hold its head high now after 10000kms  and now well thought of by them.you don't see me trying to sit up and ride with one hand when touring like them as they have got aches and pains.top gear roll ons it kicks them hard, less than a second slower than the busa at our strip and i can stay with most of them  except the real tight bits when its mass takes over.what big bike would you suggest?  i still choice my BANDIT 1200 GSF S

I just read an article in Motorcyclist that compared various years of R1's. If I remember correctly, they felt that the 2001 had the best balance of engine, steering and braking. My friend just bought a new CBR and that thing is sweet. I can't tolerate all that weight on my wrists but they are fun for an hour at a time.

If I were buying one of these, I'd ride the GSXR and the Honda and buy the one that felt right based on my personal tastes. Good luck!

Thanks again guys tour imput is really helping me out,  But I am also looking at 600 class(insurance reasons and not to shit my pants on a wet corner when I put the power down) of course the bandit600 N as I have the 250s 96 and I love it, also R6, Ninja, GSXR, FZ6 I'd mostly be out at weekends and do 100 to 200 miles some times could be more if we're touring.

FWIW, the B6 & FZ6 are not in the same class as the R6, GSXR & Ninja. If you like the ergos of your B2.5, you will like the B6 & FZ6. The repliracers in the 600 class will still probably be a bundle on insurance. Any of them could put you in a world of hurt if you get too entusiastic with the wrist in the wet.

I've been hearing rumors that next years GSXR600 will really be something. Currently, they have been having a tough time winning races in the Supersport class and seem to be outclassed by the Yamaha & Kawi.

It really boils down to what tacoman said.  I have over 35 years in the saddle and have had around 2 dozen different bikes.  No such thing as a bad one.  If you want comfort get a Caddy, if you want fun two wheels is the way to go.  But not being rich, which I assume you are not, you will be stuck with one bike.  To light on the freeway and you are bumped around.  To heavy or long and the twisties are a pain.  I have found the B1200 is the best of all worlds.  You can lay down, sit up, plenty of room, under 400 lbs, not to high, not to low and you will never find all of that and with that much power for that dollar.  You can get a new one for the price of most used.  Another member picked a new one up for just under 7K in ND.  You can find a good used one under 3K.  So your riding style and $$$$$$.

A friend of mine picked up a fazer600 a few weeks ago, and it's a great bike more of a touring position than the race-rep 600's though.
As was said, if you like the position of the B250 you cant go wrong with a B6 a fazer6 or a hornet6.
If you're set on a racier bike, the CBR600F is very sporty, but still more useable as a commuter than the CBRR's

Edit:
you're in ireland aswell, if you are looking at a bigger bike look at getting it in the uk as prices are more realistic, and they MOT bikes so you're less likely to end up with a lemon (or buy my SV650s so i can get a bandit6)

Remember Hibernian just pulled out of the irish motorcycle insurance scene, so there's only two companies left insuring irish bikers from the end of july Carole Nash and AON, so factor in the likely increase in premiums that are on the way. :(

also join up on some irish bike lists/forums if you haven't already
the yahoo group : motorcycle ireland is an excellent mailing list, and www.irishbikerforum.com was set up recently to give irish bikers a place to congregate on the web and discuss irish-specific issues without being lost in a sea of aussies yanks and brits.

(no offence to the yanks aussies and brits on here)

What did he say?  Danged if I can understand you Irishmen?
Have enough trouble with the Brits, Aussies, and Kiwis.........and Canadians!! :monkeymoon:

The SV650 is another good 'alternative' sportbike choice.
 What about the Speed 4?

If you're getting a bigger bike, get a bigger insurance policy.   :monkeymoon:

My buddy has a Gixxer 1000 he bought last year.  He loves it and has it tricked out nicely.  My other buddy has an SV 1000 that is too fast for its own good.  I have my Bandito 1200.  We all keep up together nicely.  Whatever you buy make sure you like it, it fits your body size, yada, yada.  You'll love whatever you end up getting anyway.

Easier said than done in Ireland, we only have 3 insurance companies that'll insure bikers, and one of them is pulling out next month due to nonprofitabilty in its motorcycle insurance dept.
Typical insurance for a 25year old guy on a 250cc bandit is 700~1200€ ($850~1500) and thats for third party cover only, fully comp would be double that, often more expensive than the bike itself. If you're under 25 only one company will insure you (for all intents and purposes). Its a nightmare situation at the moment here.

I thought small vehicles and motorcycles were preferred in Europe?  You'd think that they would make it easier to obtain and insure one.
