I Got My Warning... Here's Yours!!
« on: March 08, 2005, 09:55:24 PM »
Soooooo... life at the office sux big time - I bust out cuz I have that luxury.  It's a beautiful day with lots of sunshine, light winds, and a brand new Bandit 1200 just itching to get past the break-in period.  Mind you - limiting a Bandit to 5500 rpm means only one thing..... it will only do 90 mph in 5th gear.  Funny thing though... I have not found too may 90 mph speed limit roads but I digress.

I'm easing across this bridge - couple of fishermen in a boat having a good time too.  I "gently" accelerate into a long sweeper - remember I'm not revving over 5500 just like the book sez - and what do my wandering eyes spy?  Yup... Mr. State Trooper is coming right at me.  Now you are wondering the same thing I was..... did I hit fifth gear or only fourth (insert Dirty Harry here - "do you feel lucky punk.... well do ya?").  I guess it didn't matter cuz he u-turned and pulled me over.

Doing my best "yes, sir - no, sir" and having all my documents in good order he let me go with a warning - no ticket!!             Not sure if it was because the bike was new, I was courteous, I wasn't going THAT fast and he was curious about this cool looking bike or what..... but I thanked him profusely for the wake-up call about speeding.

I just want to urge everyone to pay attention and watch your speed.  There are times and places for an extra wrist twist but pick them carefully.  Don't let the great weather, or your first season ride, or personal troubles keep you from being focused at all times.  I swear every car after that for 30 miles looked liked an LEO.

But damn.... 55 mph is boring (and it lugs the motor in 5th   )

Well Jay,  maybe the fact that you were tucked behind the fairing tipped off the trooper?   :duh:       As you know, I NEVER do that!  :boohoo:

Better watch out!  Excessive experimentation with the B-12 will get you into trouble with the judge too.  Don't ask me how I know!

Tip:  Keep her in 3rd gear and it just sounds like your going fast!

http://twtex.com/

Its a nice site that a few of us TX bandit owners frequent.  Lots of good rides are being organized out of there.  It's also friendly to Texans, like this place is (and while others are not   ).  One of the moderators there is a TX ex-bandit owner too.

Friend of mine is a state trooper, he said that he will rarely give out a ticket unless the speed was really crazy or if you are a cocky jerk. He said to "remember, that alot of cops have bikes and ride". :beers: Just be courteous and admit to going over the limit and be nice. Also, kinda depends on where you are when you burn the carbon build up outta the carbs.

But this was in College Station.... Home of Texas A&M where the city lives off of giving tikets to students.. I was polite as could be, I knew I was busted, also knew there was no chance he was giving me a warning, it just doesnt happen with CSPD...

Gets your heart pumping, doesn't it???  So he got you on radar while he was coming at you in the opposing lane?  Thank God we don't have that here in PA.  I got nabbed in DE that way.  However in PA, there is no such thing as a warning if you get pulled over by a Statie.  If you do something bad enough for them to take the time to pull you over, you're getting a ticket - like 74 in a 55 (twice in the last 4 years in my cage  :duh: ).

Being polite is the #1 thing to do.  One of my buddies who I play poker with every Thursday is a lieutenant with our County PD.
He's given me lots of helpful hints and tips for situations like that.

Even the occasional field sobriety test... just for fun of coarse.

RADAR?
« Reply #11 on: March 09, 2005, 02:51:48 PM »
can a cop really use a radar on a bike?
i'm just assuming its too small and too hard to aim at.
I have no knowledge or experience with cops and bikes

Yes.

They use the same equipment to measure how fast a pitch is in Baseball.

Your only hope is if your headilght is taped off and you and the bike are painted flat black.  Then it will be slightly more difficult to get a reading.
Or if there is a truck or something large behind you that will throw a bigger signal back to the gun.

If he's using radar, that won't help any... the radar unit displays the strongest signal, based on the size, shape, and construction of the target. A mostly fiberglass corvette will reflect less than a similarly sized steel auto; a sloped front reflects less than a flat front; a semi reflects a helluva lot more than a car; etc. etc. Bikes are tough to get a reading on unless there's nothing around them; the stronger reflections are coming from the other vehicles. (Although I do have a pic of my radar after clocking a bike at 144... where is it... Ah! Here it is:)

No, I didn't catch him. I kept him in sight for several miles, but he was lane-splitting oncoming traffic to get away; and it's kind of hard to do that in a Crown Vic.  :duh:

Now, Laser, on the other hand, is affected by the finish on the bike. A dull or dirty finish will reflect less than a clean, shiny one. That doesn't mean they won't get any reading; they just might not get a reading as far out on a dirty vehicle as they would on a clean one. Laser can't be used while moving, though.
