Holy Crap!
« on: July 29, 2007, 12:14:16 AM »
I was coming into work today, and people were braking on the entrance ramp to the highway

Anyway, I'm idling along in 4th, glancing over my shoulder, and I see my chance so I gun it, and off I go, smoothly pulling up to 95 kmh and looking left some more to get to the far left lane when HOLY CRAP I HIT THE POWER BAND ZOOOOOM I'M DOING 135 so I upshift and roll off the throttle now that I'm actually looking in the direction I'm going.

Man, this bike pulls like a rocket in the lower gears. Maybe I should use them more often ;)

Should we guess what bike you are riding?

Maybe you are still breaking it in...

Wonder what he'd have experienced if he'd been on a FULL BORE Bandit... either a 1200 or 1250?

650's are fast too, y'know.

It all depends on what you're used to.... maybe his last bike was a Hardly...

Forgive me, for some kooky reason I thought my bike was listed with every post. Turns out that's on another forum ;)

I think I know why I was surprised.

1) I tend to ride around in higher gears. I'm usually already in 6th when I get to 70 kph.

2) I rarely take the bike over 6k RPM. At the tail end of my break-in period, I was downshifting on the highwy to blip it up to 9 and 10k RPM, but I was just holding it steady there.

3) I know how the bike accelerates when the engine's under 6k RPM, and that already feels like a rush.

But yesterday, that was an experience. Mostly because I was looking over my shoulder when I hit that extra burst of acceleration that I didn't know was there. And probably because the power band is higher than I thought.

Oh, and my previous bike was a 1979 GS 750 L. A big difference  :bomb:

Good answer, Barbarian.

The 600/650 Bandits are set up with the power band up in the high rpm range, similar to the way most of the 600 series crotch rockets are.

By comparison, the 1200/1250 Bandits have the power band in the middle of the RPM range.

I've got an 01 1200S. From about 2500 on to about 7K it pulls like a tank recovery vehicle... But for that burst of thrust in traffic, all it requires is a twist of the grip... in the 4K to 5K range you are right where the max power resides... or so it feels... Almost scary, it is.

Mind you I don't ride the bike you do...but love that 'holy crap' moment. Bandit manages to but a manic grin on my face.
