Title: Looking At A Gixxer!!
Post by: jbrough7 on September 28, 2006, 07:52:51 PM
Hate to admit it, but for some reason I have an itch to get a sportbike!  Not sure if this itch is going to be scratched or not.

I love the Bandit and it does pretty much everything well but I guess I just want to try something different.  Did think about adding clip-ons to the Bandit but not sure.....

Anybody had any riding on a Gixxer? - I'm thinking more of a 600 than a 750.

Particularily like the black with a bit of yellow:

take care.

Jim - it depends on what you're after.  If you're expecting to do a lot long touring days or doing a decently long commute every day, I think you'll get tired of the sportbike riding position (although it's not as torturous as many make it out to be).  If it's going to be a weekend plaything for a couple hours of tearing up the backroads, you'll love it!

BTW - the 750 is torqueier and actually can make a better streetbike than the peaky 600.

My roommate has a GSX-R 1000, although nice and trigger happy, it is not all that comfy.  If you are just looking for something to wizz around on and not have far to go, then they are fun.  If you use it as a main mode of transportation.....that is another story just like Pitter says.

Don't get me wrong its fun...if its speed you want, I can tell you that my roommate and I race from time to time, and my 99 1200 bandit definitley holds its own.  Its just as fast.

Hey Jim. Probably a lot like you but older. What I'm getting at is I had a streeted Gixxer a few years back but found I had to give it up due to bad knees and bad sholder and neck. Just can't tuck in the way I used to. The Bandit allows me to still enjoy the Ricerocket ride with minimal pain. But, I have to admit, that pic you posted sure looks good. The Gixxer, Imho, has always been one of the best looking street/race bikes around. Never going too far to the 'Starwars' styling we see in some.

I have ridden an 03' model and did not like the position at all.  Sure its fast but so is my 1200 and its a lot more comfortable.

Dang how much do they pay teachers in Canada?

I haven ridden 600,750, and 1000 from early 90's models up. Dont like superbike riding postion. I cant stand all my weight ( 250#) on my wrists.
I also think the bars are too low. I know I can raise them with a new triple  clamp but the pegs are still awful high.
They are great bikes, but MAYBE more suited to a track? Can you really ride harder and faster on a GSXR on the street than say a Aprilla naked bike, Ducati Moster, Bandit, Z1000, CB919? I would rather ride one of these if I was seaching for some more power.
20 miles is all I can handle on the GSXR.

The prices are really not that bad for canada as I've seen brand new 2006 Gixxer 750s for a bit less than $10000 here.  Can't locate any brand new 600s yet to see if they are a better deal.

The way I look at it is I'm getting old and rickety so I might not have too many more chances at owning a sportbike.  Maybe I should just try clip-ons on the bandit and see what that feels like?

Hey, you only live once, right?  I just want that 'once' to go on for a bit, that's all!

Jim, do some review reading online.  The 750 is the way to go, hands down!  It's just within a hair of being the same performance as the 1000.  Do it, man!  Then post your review here.  I can't wait to read it!

Hey, Des, how's it going?

I HAVE done a lot of research and everybody seems to agree with Pitter B4, in that the 750 has the torque so you don't have to rev the thing above 8500 all the time.  But then some writers/riders say that the Suzuki gearbox is SOOOOO lovely that it is a lot of fun rowing back and forth on the 600.

The price difference is so small, apparently, that it isn't even worth mentioning....

Wonder how that sucker (the 750) would feel after a Bandit 650....the weight is about the same and maybe forty or fifty more horses!!!  That would be some serious giddyup!!

Just read a recent comparison test, however, and they liked the ZX-6R the best with the Gixxer a distant third (Yammie second):

Is that one beautiful piece of work or what?

Where's Michelangelo when you need him??

Aesthetically, IMHO of course, the R6 is the best of those 3.  If I were looking at a 600 class superbike, I’d look Triumph first.

Come on now,I've not ridden since my day at Nelson Ledges and those pics are givin' me a woody!
There was a older gentlman there in my class with a new Triumph 675. My! what a beatutiful bike,he said his kids bought it for him and sent it from Cal.(must have put them through med school I'm guessing?) I passed him though with the mughty Bandit.
I think any of the new sport bikes are great, and the one that you can make go fast, is the one you get used to. I still have the hots for a SV1000. Less wieght, and you don't have to work as hard to stay in power range as the smaller inline 4s. But I'm flexable,I'll be patient and see if a deal comes up on somthing. (AND KEEP THE BANDIT)

Just for comparison's sake, the yammie in question:

It's the 50th anniversary special for 2006.  Funny, I was never much for Yamahas but that has me drooling....

I can't find a pic quickly but if you go R6 - you have to go Raven black!

US MSRP for the Triumph 675 is $9k

After the bikes were done for the day, a local guy from Erie that was at Nelson Ledges on the 18th told me," I didn't think of it earlier,I should have let you take my R6 out." I responded with," Oh no you don't, you just want to spoil me,so I'll buy a new bike."  He's a salesman at a local Yahmaha dealer. But if the offer comes up again,I'll take him up on it.

Good point!  Why is it the Honda gets ignored?  I the comparison tests I've read, it finishes last out of the 'big 4'!!  Usually more dough and a bit too porky, although it has lost weight recently.

My nephew has an older one but I think he has baked the thing.  We went a bit squirrelly on a recent run together and he couldn't keep up to the Bandit 650!  You should have heard the excuses !  But one time he pulled up beside me at a light and I could see three places exhaust was coming out that it shouldn't have been on his bike!!

the RR:

I checked all the prices and the Honda-Suzuki-Kawasaki are all within $200 of each other in the upper $11000 range in Canada.  The YZF R6 is $12500!! I can't find prices on the Triumph but $9 American would probably be $12000 or so CDN.  Great deals on 2006s right now with winter coming so no way you have to pay list!

Deciding on which bike is one thing but then getting the right colour would be killer...here's the 600R in black:

I want a supersport also.

I would get a Kawi ZX6R over a gixxer.  But, the new 07 gixxer is nice.

OHHH,thats so sweet! My brother (the one w/ the ZRX1200) keeps telling me the GSX-R750 would be the bike for me. I'm sure I could get used to it real quick, but I'm still leaning toward the SV1000.
As far as the CBR600RR goes,my instryctor also has a R6 that he's raced, but likes the Honda better. Its more planted, and less twitchy than the R6. My other instructor runs the ZX636,he runs some fast X too. I,ve been partial too the Suzooks,a GSX-R would do me fine. It all de[ends on wich dealer needs a new tile showroom and what he can make a deal on. In the mean time I'm still contaplating on the 750 head for my B12.

The only REAL negative I've heard about Gixxers is the distance between the pedals and the seat is just not enough.  Tough on tall guys.  Seemed alright when I sat on one, though...

I was looking at them about a week ago.  I think the 600 was $8799, 750 was $9999 and the 1000 was $10,999.

hey there, ive been thinking the same as you ive had my B6 for nearly a year now as my first bike and now I feel ready to move onto something  more sporty. I really don't know what to decided on a gsxr 600 K4 or an SV1000S K4. I think I will be going along the lines of a gsxr, but I love the sound of the V twins. I read quite a few reviews on the gsxr 6 they say its the most comfortable riding position of its class, best wind protection. i also read a review saying the tester rode for over 3 hours with no aches or pains anywhere which seems ideal for me as I have to commute around 3 hours when I do go home. Let me know what you find.

Ugh.  Too much plastic.  When I worked the ART OF THE MC exhibit last year, almost all the patrons skipped the final gallery, once they could no longer see the engines.  The only thing they stopped for were the last couple bikes, the V-Rod and the Rune.  I understand the need for aerodynamics, but since I don't have a younger brother named Spridel hiding in the trunk, I value looks more.

Well to throw my 2 cents in.  every thing i have read over the last 4 months have suggested that as a street daily rider the Triumph Daytona 675 the the bomb!! The price diff is very comp to the jap counterparts.  MSRP  $8999. ( US )  But the trick is they are only making 4000 units, which all are not coming to the states.

Early reports are that the 2007 CBR600 Honda is the 600 to beat, lighter, more powerful, shorter engine, no slipper clutch but a engine braking management system. (awesome looking and finest fit and finish in the class).
To me it has been the smoothest 600 sportbike for some time, has it over taken the GSXR and R6 for bad*ss supremecy?
Title: Looking At A Gixxer!!
Post by: jbrough7 on October 02, 2006, 11:49:58 AM
I'm really surprised cuz I thought all new ss's got the slipper clutch, as in Kawasaki's new ZX6.  The ZX6 also gets a really cool transmission, close -ratio and cassette-style so racers can change the gear ratios quickly.

Maybe I don't need QUITE that much technology? :duh:

another test of the big four:  http://www.motorcycledaily.com/23june06_supersport.html

I think I've read three different comparisons and each time they have picked a different winner!  Funny, on one test they said the Gixxer sucks because of the riding position but then the guys from motorcycledaily says its the best because of the adjustable footpedals!  Go figure...

You could probably choose any one of these bikes and be perfectly happy.

Post by: 1200 bandits on October 02, 2006, 01:56:09 PM
Hey Jim:

Why not check out the FAST riding school early next year before deciding?  http://www.fastridingschool.com/english/index.html

You'll get a feel for how the GSXR-600 feels, have a blast, and learn lots.

I went in 2003 and again in 2004.  I'd love to go back; but with my Bandit 1200.  I just couldn't get comfortable on those 600s.  Now if I was on my bike I could perform much better.

The funniest part of the clip-ons for me was that they almost caused me to drop the bike at a crawl; I had to put my foot down.

I can lean my Bandit 1200 at a crawl, but those damn clipons hit the gas tank and wouldn't turn any farther.

This was at the end of a braking exercise where you had to charge as fast as you could to a line and then haul the bike down to a stop as fast as you could.

Then turn around on a dime and do it in the other direction.

Track time was excellent.

And; if you check their website they do sell their bikes to replenish them with new bikes.

Looks great, 1200, thanks so much for the tip!  I've just heard about these schools recently and have been thinking of signing up.  That would be awesome!

Funny you should mention the clipons as I was just looking at the Bandit and thinking of getting them and how much clearance they would have, etc.  You know, with clip-ons and a lower fairing, I could almost build my 'own' supersport.  That might be a cheap way to find out if I liked them or not.

I have to take the Bandit in today for a warranty check so I'll see about clipons then - and maybe ask about hot grips as well.

Take care and thanks again.

675 for sure! they did a test in motorcyclist with all the jap 600's and the trump 675 and gixxer 750. picked the 675 over them all. is has more power them any jap 600 in street use look at the dyno charts it crushes all the 600 under 13000 rpm. it also makes as much ft lbs as the 750 gixxer but at less rpm. also the lightest of the group. i am looking real hard at the 675 as my next bike. i love the triples power plant already in my 955i but a lighter bike with almost the same power and better handling whats not to love?

I've found some more tests but I can't find the hp stats for comparison's sake.

On the triumph uk site, it says 123 bhp for the Daytona.  Wonder how that compares to the Kawasaki?

Here are some comparo stats between the Jap 4 I've found; no Daytona here and these numbers are more than a year old.  The Kawasaki is the best of the middleweights as far as hp at 110 while the others are all very close together.  The Honda was the consistent winner but that was 2005:
