Wow! Great and incredible story find Stormi. As riders we know when it comes to balancing on two wheels, the truth is stranger then fiction as to how or when these things can happen. The author did the right thing by chasing down the truck driver as too many get of these type get away with hit and run. My personal guess is that the driver was probubly under the influence of road rage and/or intoxicated. Again, excellent find..

That's so freaking nuts I didn't think it was a real story at first. That rider is damned lucky he didn't get killed. That's jacked up....
From what I was reading on that thread it looks like undercover cops might have been following the guy for something. The guy that made the post said they showed up right away when he caught up with the van.

Yeah, it looks to me like there's definitely more to this one than we've seen. Especially that "we couldn't pull him over" comment he overheard, eh?

I think this is the 2nd story you have posted Stormi where the bike gets butt stuck to a cage after getting rear ended. I wonder if this is a common flaw or benefit and what if anything industry should do about it. Perhaps a rear fender made out of spring steel or a warning device to let you know of a fast closing/tailing vehicle. :bandit:

You're right, it is the second one. The other half forwards them to me.
I would think a big extendable boom would do the trick. If a vehicle is closing at that rate of speed,.. extend and smash an airbag sensor. :shock: of course the impact may be a problem for balance on the bike... :roll:
I would like to know what the guy's defense is, but I have a bad feeling that because the rider didn't get significantly injured, it may be a slap on the wrist for that offense, and whatever the others were will take precedence.

We sort of joke about this but when you think about it, what is behind us is always one of a riders main concerns as it is a vulnerable spot. Personally I always install small moon mirrors in the corners of my OEM mirrors and use them constantly when riding especially in the city, looking to remove myself from closing vehicles or extreme tail gaters.

Absolutely, I think probably close to all, of not all of my biggest scares have come from behind. I keep a good eye on what's behind me, and try to make sure I have the room to accelerate out of the way if need be.
At lights, I watch the vehicle behind me come up, until they stop, and in the meantime, make sure I flash my brake lights, to try to get their attention to make sure they see me.

I HAVE RECENTLY TAKEN UP A HABIT THAT A FRIEND OF MINE HAS WHILE STOPPED AT RED LIGHTS OR STOP SIGNS. HE NEVER SITS STOPPED WITHOUT BEING IN GEAR AND WITH HIS CLUTCH ENGAGED. HE SAYS THAT THIS IS IN READINESS FOR JUST THAT SORT OF THING. HE SAID THAT HE ONCE WITTNESSED HIS FRIEND GET REAR-ENDED ON AN SV650 AND IT TORE THE HELL OUT OF THE BIKE AND HIS FRIEND. GOOD HABIT TO HAVE I THINK....NOW ANY WAY!!!!

The acceleration capability of our Bandits can be a real safety feature if we are aware of what is behind us.
I use Napoleon bar-end mirrors and CRG Blindsight convex mirrors to keep track of such hazards.
While in moving in traffic, I can put some real distance on an approaching vehicle in a hurry if necessary to keep a safe distance. It is stop lights that worry me. I agree that keeping a watch in the mirrors with the clutch in and in first gear is a good idea. I also tap my brake to flash the brake light until the vehicle behind me is stopped.
Where I live, SW Florida, rear-end crashes are quite common. Most happen at stop lights and impaired drivers, either by age or substance, and cell phone users seem to be a big factor.
In my opinion, if you hit something from behind, you should be liable for failure to pay attention while driving a deadly weapon.

That's the way it pretty much is in Indiana. 99.9% of the time if you rear end somebody you're the one held liable for the accident. With a very few exceptions (like somebody pulling out in front of you) it's hard to avoid the blame.
Only wish it was a mandatory law that hitting a bike called for more severe punishment.

Semi-truck takes man and wheelchair for a ride down Red Arrow Highway
Tribune Staff Report
PAW PAW, Mich. -- A 21-year-old man was taken on a wild ride Wednesday afternoon when the wheelchair he was in became attached to the grille of a semi-truck and was taken four miles down a highway at about 50 mph.
The man, whose name police did not release, was not injured. The driver was unaware he was pushing the man, according to a news release from the Michigan State Police.
Authorities began receiving calls about 4 p.m. that the semi was traveling westbound on Red Arrow Highway, just outside of Paw Paw, with the wheelchair.
"You are not going to believe this, (but) there is a semi pushing a guy in a wheelchair on Red Arrow Highway," an unknown caller told the Michigan State Police.
Police at first believed the calls were pranks. But when troopers responded to the Ralph Moyle Trucking Co. at 39269 Red Arrow Highway where the semi had come to a stop, they noticed the wheelchair with the man sitting in it, still attached."It was quite a ride," the man reportedly told police.
"The man spilled his soda pop, but he wasn't upset," Sgt. Kathy Morton of the Michigan State Police said.
Police said the man was unharmed and unfazed by the incident.
The driver was in disbelief when he stepped out of the semi and saw what he had picked up along the way, police said.
"When he saw us, he was like, 'What's going on?'" Morton said.An investigation revealed the driver had pulled out of a local gas station when the man in the wheelchair pulled in front of the semi, according to police. His wheelchair somehow became lodged by its handles to the front grille.
"Thank God the semi didn't go on (Interstate) 94," Morton said.

Sad thing is that all the stunters that have that 2" wide metal plate welded to the tail for pulling 12's could actually say it serves as a "safety" feature :stickpoke:
