I have recently decided that I would like a bit of music while I ride. Mainly for the longer trips I would like to listen to a few sounds as I tootle along.

With this in mind I purchased an mp3 player (the cd player just to big) and have started to fool around with headphones etc. I can only handle the ear bud type set up for short periods before my ears start to ache so I have retro fitted some small speakers into the lining of my helmet. This works fine but I find that they are a bit quite as they are not directly inserted into my ears.

Does anyone else do the music thing when they ride and what sort of setup do you have. Any advice etc would be appretiated.

I bought some speakers from a company online for helmets, they work great. They even have a short cord off the speakers, then an extension with volume control, so its easy to disconnect for helmet removal.

I can't remember the site, I just did a search for mc helmet speakers

If you look around you may find that some more expensive ear buds will fit a lot better and are even somewhat customizable. If you want to go whole hog, you can have custom buds fitted to your ear with a gel that is then hardened. This info would be a lot more useful if i could remember the company that does that.

I bought a pair of panasonic headphones that have a hanger type peice for your ear that work well. The hanger peice slips on your ear similar to the end of eyeglasses and then the speakers lay flat against your ears. I think they were all of $9 at Walmart.

Thanks guys for your input. I think I have found something similar to what you are talking about ratbike05 so I will have a look tommorrow.

I bought a cheapie pair of the headphones like ratbike05 mentions, and removed the ear holder thingies, and slipped the headphones right into the lining of my helmet ( there's a pocket on either side of the helmet made for just such an occasion. Then I routed the wires so that they come out of the helmet approximately in-line with the pocket that holds my mp3 player.

I actually use the headphones to determine if my helmet is straight and on tight enough now too.

Wireless headphones might be cool to look into though....

After weighing up all of the options and being motivated by being a cheap basta**d I have settled for simply taking a pair of heaphones and removing speakers that simply as stormi suggests slipped straight into the helmet lining.

Went for a 300km ride the other day and even at h/way speeds music was clear. I did get some funny looks though, you know a 200+ pound guy doing the boogie to the bee gees at 80mph.

LOL! Hey,... that doesn't make me a cheap bast*rd too, does it?

The Bee Gees?? Seriously?? I might have made a grave mistake enabling that....

Truly though,... "boogie-ing" to anything on a bike looks a little strange to most.

What looks even funnier is the fact he had his 13 y/o daughter on the back of the bike cringing....to the fact he was listening to the Bee Gees, with me following on the Bandit "Head Banging" to prodigy.....with his sister on the bike behind me.
I to was a cheap bas***d $8 NZ and I inserted headphone speakers into the lining of the helmet, they sit against my ears and at 120kmh about all you can hear is the music.....cool!

i, too, would've never replied had i known there was disco going on.

i don't know about prodigy either. you start getting into the music, look down and all of a sudden you're going 110mph.

Speed is never a problem. I always bring the speed down with a dose of Billy Joel, he just so cool!!!

I just realised that there is a pattern forming to my choice of music "B"ee Gees, "B"illy Joel, but I promise to draw the line at "B"ananarama.
