Motorcyclist hurt in chase on I-64

Richmond Times-Dispatch Jul 22, 2005

A 24-year-old man was in critical condition last night after running from state police and crashing his motorcycle into a trooper's car on Interstate 64 in eastern Henrico County.

Daniel Brian Sturdivant of Williamsburg was critically injured after being thrown from a 2003 Honda motorcycle. He was taken to VCU Medical Center, said Sgt. Kevin Barrick, a police spokesman.

Trooper R.J. Brown III, who was in the cruiser that was struck, was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital before noon yesterday, Barrick said.

Traffic was snarled for several hours on eastbound I-64 as a result of the crash.

The incident began at 6:53 a.m. after several motorists called police about a motorcyclist traveling in excess of 100 mph on I-64 in New Kent County, weaving in and out of traffic, changing lanes without signaling and cutting vehicles off, according to information from the state police.

Four minutes later, a trooper clocked the motorcycle by radar traveling 93 miles per hour near exit 214, Barrick said, "and a pursuit ensued."

The state trooper lost sight of the motorcycle, but another trooper spotted it seven minutes later at mile marker 197 and also pursued it, Barrick said.

As Brown was getting into position to join the pursuit at mile marker 195, near the Laburnum Avenue exit, the motorcycle crashed into the rear of his cruiser, Barrick said.

The accident is still under investigation, Barrick said.

Maybe it should've been worded differently, but how do you cut someone off when you are going 100mph?  Was traffic going faster?

Good point, he wasn't "cutting" people off, maybe pissing them off because all they got to see was a quickly disappearing tag?

My little 400 is pretty scary at 110, and at that speed I can kill myself easily, don't think I need to go any faster.  I've done 145 in a stock car, and those corners come up REALLY FAST.

You haven't seen a bike cutting in between cars at a higher speed?
I'm not talking passing safely slightly above the speed limit.
I'm talking 'Gee, I ought to be in MotoGP' riding....
(Same as the 4 wheeler who thinks the interstate is his favorite Nascar track...and he's the STAR.....)
I'm talking almost 'contacting' your bumper.
It's stupid.....and pisses people off....who may pick up a cell phone, or step on the brakes.
Even if you did use a turn signal......it isn't smart.

100% fabricated bullshit.  There's nothing about that story any of you can consider legit...cops vs. bikes stories are never in any way a substance resembling "accurate".

17 miles in 7minutes?  Right...and I run 7's on my TL...lying phucks.  The only way he was moving that fast is if he had long open road and if that was the case the trooper (brown) intentionally caused the accident.

This is an article from a newspaper, of course, the news is always accurate.

The way I read the article, the times weren't given as a means to pinpoint the speed of the motorcycle, just the fact that it was hauling arse.
The times are probably just a rounding off of the radio transmission times from the dispatchers log.
This isn't a situation like we had in Minnesota where the police plane computed an outrageous speed for the kid on the RC51, then a ticket was issued with that figure.

I'm sure the police in this situation have enough infractions on the guy from ground observation of the vehicle.

Of course, the part where the dumbarse rear ended the police car is probably fabricated.   I bet the evil cops backed into him at high speed!

 :duh:

If the trooper had his emergency lights on while 'positioning' his car, all motorists have the obligation to slow down, pay attention and yield the right of way.   Since this squid was obviously running from the cops, it's possible he tried to manuever around the cop car....and failed.

It would be nice to see a follow up story on this situation, but.......pretty much, 'dumbarse on sportbike tries to ellude cops' is usually enough information for me.

Motorcyclist dies from crash injuries
Motorcyclist dies from crash injuries

Richmond Times-Dispatch Jul 24, 2005

A Williamsburg motorcyclist who was injured when he crashed into a state trooper's car in a police pursuit on Interstate 64 in Henrico County has died at VCU Medical Center.

State police Sgt. Kevin Barrick said Daniel Brian Sturdivant, 24, died Friday.

State police began pursuing Sturdivant on Thursday morning after several motorists complained that he was traveling faster than 100 mph. He was dangerously weaving in and out of traffic and cutting drivers off, witnesses said.

Within minutes, police saw Sturdivant driving at 93 mph near Exit 214 westbound on I-64 and began the pursuit. It ended at mile marker 195 near Laburnum Avenue when Sturdivant struck a trooper's cruiser and was ejected.

The trooper was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital the same day.
