Motorcyclists come to rescue, corner suspect
Dowagiac police arrest two men in home invasions

By MELISSA JACKSON
Tribune Staff Writer

DOWAGIAC -- The second Dowagiac home invasion attempt in less than 24 hours ended with two men in custody Tuesday night, thanks to some motorcyclists.

Members of the Avengers Motorcycle Club were at a meeting around 8 p.m. EDT when they heard a woman's cries for help from a house about half a block away in the 100 block of Hamilton Street, Dowagiac Police Chief Tom Atkinson said.

"They heard the screams and went to assist," he said. "They saw an individual coming from that house and basically circled the block and kept him from leaving."

The man was one of two who allegedly entered the Hamilton Street residence while the woman was home. She received minor injuries.

When police arrived, the motorcyclists pointed out where the man was hiding, and he was arrested, Atkinson said. The second man was picked up several blocks away.

Authorities believe the pair -- 37-year-old Gary Wayne Kelly Sr., who is considered homeless, and J.B. Junior Nunley Jr., 40, of Dowagiac -- was involved in Tuesday's pre-dawn home invasion just blocks away on the 300 block of Orchard Street.

In that incident a 75-year-old woman reportedly confronted a man in her home at about 3:20 a.m., according to police. The intruder allegedly attacked her, leaving her with a black eye and cuts on the chin, Atkinson said.

She managed to escape, and the man reportedly fled with another individual.

Atkinson said police believe the motive was robbery although nothing was taken in either incident.

Kelly was arraigned on two counts of home invasion first degree, two counts of conspiracy, assault with intent to rob while armed, assault with intent to rob while unarmed, and habitual offender. He faces a maximum sentence of 30 years. His bond is set at $350,000 cash or surety.

Nunley was arraigned on two counts of home invasion, two counts of conspiracy to home invasion, assault with intent to rob while unarmed, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, assault with intent to rob while armed, and habitual offender. He faces a maximum penalty of life in prison. His bond was set at $1 million.

Both men are lodged in Cass County Jail.
