Rowdy shot dead in encounter

NT Bureau
Chennai, Aug 29:

A notorious rowdy, who has been involved in three murder cases and has been a wanted man by the law in connection with 23 other cases, was shot dead by the police in an encounter in the wee hours of today at Pattabiram near here.

The history-sheeter Manikandan (29) belonging to Arumbakkam had been involved in extortion and kidnapping of people for ransom in areas like Tirumangalam, Choolaimedu, Koyambedu, Anna Nagar and Maduravayil.

According to police, this rowdy was detained under Goondas Act on four occasions and there were 11 non-bailable warrants (NBW) issued against him till now.

On the night of 26 August, it is said that Manikandan had kidnapped his close friend Kannan belonging to Tiruverkadu in a car from Maduravayil with the intention of getting a ransom amount of Rs 5 lakh. But, after coming to know that there was a police patrol on the way, he got down from the car and ran away under cover of darkness. Later, Kannan lodged a complaint with the Maduravayil police in this connection.

Again, yesterday, Manikandan took away Rs 500 from Kannan by force at MMDA Colony at Arumbakkam and even inflicted knife injuries on him before getting away. Once again, Kannan preferred a complaint with the Arumbakkam police against the rowdy.

Immediately, a special police team was formed to round up the elusive Manikandan and they were on the trail of the rowdy. While they were searching for him, they spotted the rowdy on a motorcycle going to Nemillicherry. No sooner than the rowdy was spotting speeding on the motorbike than the police gave him a hot chase. On seeing the policemen, Manikandan abandoned the motorcycle and hurled country-made bombs at them.

Then, the history-sheeter tried to flee on his abandoned two-wheeler. But the police team managed to corner the fugitive. Realising that he was trapped, Manikandan took out a long knife and started attacking the policemen indiscriminately.

At this juncture, the police team opened three rounds of fire in self-defence.

A bullet-ridden Manikandan was immediately rushed to SRMC Hospital at Porur and he was declared dead on arrival.

Meanwhile, the injured policemen Saravanan and Pushparagan were admitted to SRMC. Soon after the encounter, a case was registered in the Pattabiram police station.

Speaking to presspersons about the encounter death, Chennai Police Commissioner R Natraj said that acting on a tip-off that Manikandan had gone into hiding at Pattabiram, a police team rushed to the place and tried to apprehend him.

It was then that the rowdy turned violent and he was shot dead purely in self-defence, he added.

At the SRMC hospital, the injured Sub-Inspector Saravanan told mediapersons that they badly wanted Manikandan after he grabbed cash from a person by attacking him late last night.

On information that the rowdy was headed to Tiruvallur, the police team tried to catch him while he was fleeing on a Pulsar motorcycle.

On reaching the Nemillycherry railway gate, the police encountered him and he was shot down.

Holy cow!   3 shots in the US would be viewed as 'considerable restraint'!
Maybe they only had one bullet each?[/b]

FWIW, the PULSAR is a Bajaj motorbike, either 150 or 180cc, marketed as a 'premium' streetfighter type......

Yeah! 3 magazines would be more better!  That's what happens when you bring a knife to a gun fight. :monkeymoon:

Lawyer: Officer, why did you shoot Mr. Rowdy 11 times?
Cop: Because he fell down before I could reload.

Maybe the 'country made' bombs were flaming cowpies?

Are there little roadside stands in the country with old people selling handicrafts, vegetables, and 'country made bombs'?

I'm interested in how the Indian Police are amed.  Are they carrying old Webleys and Enfields?

These are the burning questions....

Maybe they are carrying Browning High powers like our troops in Canada. It seems to be the most common Commonwealth auto loader, plus the surplus and license to make them are super cheap.

They musta had old civil war Kentucky Plains rifles....

even an old 9mm browning high power can empty 10 rnds in a clip as fast as the trigger can be pulled....

Country made bombs !       Are they a subsidiary of CountryTime lemonade ???  Or is it just like grandma makes 'em ???
