phpBB : Critical Error

Could not connect to the database

I've been seeing this a lot here lately. It's happen to me at home on a PC with dialup and at work on a Mac porting via T1. It's intermittent, but sometimes last longer than I'd care to wait. What's up?

What the message is telling us right now is that phpBB via the webserver is sending a query for a particular post, or forum, to the database server and it's not getting a response from the SQL server period. This is different than a delayed response, where it may just take some time to return with the page that we request.

This most commonly is a problem when the hardware/Operating system that the BB is running on gets bogged down, but has also been known to happen when there's something wrong with the code in tthe BB itself.

Reasons for getting bogged down are traffic - either to the one website, or because generally many websites are hosted on one box, a problem with the database - corruption, etc, or a rogue process that's using up most or all of the server's processor capability.

edit: Actually, I'm starting to wonder if our multitudes of spammers have done this....

Thanks for the info. A few other things I've noticed lately is that a page never seems to finish loading (always a spinning wheel on Firefox telling you data is [supposedly] still coming in, I have to hit the STOP button to end it), and as of a few days ago, text that runs off to the right of the screen and the reply message box cursor being about half a character behind the point where your last letter is located. The reply box text also runs "off screen" on the right side of the reply text box.

Weird stuff kiddies... :wtf:

That's bizarre.  I use firefox under both windows and linux, and I haven't noticed what you mention.  I'll watch for it though.  What version of Firefox are you running?  I have 1.5.0.7 under Linux, and 1.5.0.8 (Ooops,.. just upgraded this minute to 1.5.0.9) under windows.  You're not using the new V2 are you?

I know that Pete must have done a board upgrade at some point, because our quoting stuff is fixed, perhaps the new version has the bugs that you mention under specific circumstances... ?

I'm on Firefox 2.x. on both platforms. Perhaps this is a Firefox problem? I'll add however that I'm only experiencing these things on this site only.

I haven't had an error message all day today, but earlier in the week it was rampant... and this was with IE 6.0 @ work - and I was getting it at home with the latest version of Firefox, so I don't think it's a Firefox issue, or if it is, it's a bug in IE 6.0, too.

Well we're looking at 2 different things.  The phpBB critical error is at the data centre where the site is hosted.  Either the machine that the webserver or SQL server is on is bogged down, or there's a problem with the database itself.

I haven't had that error either today.  This is a good thing. :)

Perhaps another site on the server was getting hit hard, and bandit alley was also suffering as a result?

Then there's the weird text issues that vidrazor is having in firefox.

Yeah, I was getting the critical error thing too and I'm running Netscape 8.1 (no laughing please) on an ADSL lite line.
Everything seems okay tonight but for the last 72 hours or so it would not load. As per Vidrazor's comment about the "still loading" thing, I've had that too from time to time.
