Well, this morning at 1:01AM EST I got hit with phpBB : Critical Error again. I don't think it's a traffic issue. I don't know where the servers are located, but even at 10:01 California time on a Sunday night I can't imagine a lot going on.

I've also notice the emoticons are no longer animated, with the exception of the beers icon. :beers:

Strange stuff kiddies.

And again with the critical error message all day/evening Sunday and the same with the Suzi Stroker Board that I also hang out on. Is there some kind of attack virus that targets only boards running PHP s'ware ??? Anyone ??

Keep in mind that it's not between 10pm and 1am for the entire world.  Some parts of the world were already getting up for work on monday, or part way through their day.

It's not necessarily your traditional "web traffic" causing the grief.  It can be a denial of service attack against the server, or it can be what we call "rogue" processes.  (That's a program that was running properly, then forgot it's manners and began causing havoc on the computer, by using all of it's resources and such.)  It could be that the database is "upset", because of corruption.  It could be that there's something broken in phpBB right now.

This problem is actually 99% of the time completely a software problem.  Either the database software, the operating system, or the bulletin board software ( i.e. a configuration problem)

The problem is that the people that need to know about it so they can fix it, aren't finding out.  I suspect that even if Pete knows about it at this point, that he will still have to be in contact with the company hosting the website.  They are the ones that will have to fix the communication problems between the two parts of the server that are malfunctioning.

A distinct possibility.  phpBB and postNuke sites are some of the most heavily attacked and exploited boards there are.  What's the web address of the stroker board?

Here's a screen grab of how it looks like on my Mac at work, along with the basic hardware and OS info:

Notice the spinning wheels and text. This is Firefox 2.0.0.1

I noticed the same last night on firefox 1.5 under linux.  I -think- what's happening here is that some of the advertising at the bottom of the page has either not finished loading, or is "refreshing" and not bothering to confirm that it's finished.  When mine did it, it had a google address in the status bar, so it seemed that it didn't get it's stuff from google fast enough.

>>I -think- what's happening here is...<<

Well, that's a possibility, but it's only happening on this site. That doesn't explain the text issue. At another site, sport-touring.net, I'm seeing a WEE bit of text (the very last letter on the right of a the longest line) get chopped. I don't know if anyone else on the site has experienced that, haven't asked. I suspect that perhaps Firefox may have a bit to do with this.

I haven't seen the text issue lately on my PC at home, but as you can see from the screen grab of my Mac at work, it's pretty bad. Anybody else getting cutoff text like that either here or at any other sites?

And the emoticons thing is weird. They appear to animate on the Mac, but still no animation on my PC. All my java settings are no different than they were (I believe those icons are java scripts, no?). I'm wondering if I killed something off in Windows services or gpedit that may have something to do with this. Why is the beers icon animated? Is it an animated GIF?

Looking for clues...

I suspect that the not finishing loading is site specific.  The text thing is likely a small incompatibility of firefox with phpBB, whether that's a coding problem in phpBB, or something broken in firefox's new version I don't know.  I tend to believe it's the latter.  I don't get the issue with the older version of Firefox, and I haven't had time to upgrade.   The mac that I have sitting here may have vers. 2.0.x on it though, I'll try to remember to do that tomorrow.  For the time being, I have to go to bed, gotta be up at 6am to drive th eother half to work.  I hate mornings!

The icons should just be animated gifs.  I'm not too sure what to tell you about all of that.

Reinstalled FF 1.5.0.5 (on my Mac at work). Still see text running off. Still getting all funky type on the Mac. I have to do a text preview to refresh the screen so I can see what I'm writing. If I try to backspace through my text that I'm writing, all hell breaks loose trying to find not only the cursor, but a good number of letters typed. Happens intermittently too. That's not a smily face I'm typing there! :duh:

I'm going to have to say it's a Mac thing.    I never have gotten along with Macs.   Seriously though, I just booted this mac up that's beside me, taking up space only, and it's got FF 1.5.0.8 on it, currently updating to 1.5.0.9, and it doesn't have any of the problems that you describe.  *shrugs*  I'm not sure what to tell you.
