Realistic Quarter Mile Times

A friend of mine bought a new Hayabusa. I believe they are capable of 9.90 quarter mile times (may be off on that time, but I know they are in the nines)  This was in June of last year. He used to ride a Yamaha V-Max.  He has been riding all his life.

He went to the drag strip a couple weekends ago, all excited about his new bike. Now mind you he is not a pro racer or anything, but he is an experienced rider (over 20 years riding almost everyday). His first run was an 11.57

He was devestated, was having some trouble launching. After all day working on it his best run was a 10.69

Here is my question. The pro's can get a stock Bandit like my 97 into the low 11,  high 10 range. What can the average rider do?  What is a realistic time? Any drag racers in here care to comment?

The first busa that I ever saw, ran a 9.42 with a 135 lb pro rider. Most busas, stock, with 200 lb, average to good rider, will run low 10s. Any stock Bandit, average 180 lb rider, that runs anyting in the 10s, has made a good run.
My Bandit, which was not stock when I bought it, runs high 9s, with 200 lb rider. I have a friend who has a Bandit, has a jet kit, exhaust, and GSXR cams, and he runs mid 10s, he is around 160 lbs. :motorsmile:

Altitude and temperature make a big difference also.

my buddy that i bought my bandit of off had it running 10.3s with a wasted clutch, jet kit, slip on, and 36mm flatside carbs. he currently runs a stock 05 busa, only lowered and air shifter and is running consistent 9.30s. excellent rider and about 125lbs :wink:

Damn,.. normally for info like that I would say check the "Really Useful section" in the back of "Bike" magazine ( UK), but their last test on the Bandit was Nov of 2000, and they didn't do a standing ¼mile on it or a 0 - 60.

I would suspect that it's similar to the 919, which has similar HP and torque, albeit at higher rpm, but is just a little lighter, however, I only have a 0-60 time for the 919.

Besides the bike, practice on the riders end would play a huge part. Set-up (suspension), knowing where to come out at(rpm) .One bike may be easier to launch than another. So practice could play a huge roll,at least for the average amature rider.   Dan

Just got back from my very first night running the Bandit in the quarter mile.... had a blast - 10 bucks to get in...  10 bucks to make all the runs you want.

Made 8 passes total and while I won't be winning any trophies soon it was very cool to see my progression/regression as the evening wore on.

Drum roll please......

Best overall run.... 11.92 @ 114.92 - don't forget.. this is a STOCK Bandit - no pipe or jet kit.

Best light (different run) - .077
Best 60 ft (different run) - 1.945

While I mostly managed to not embarass myself there was one massive wheelie that had to be shut down but my worst time was only 12.417 - I have a lot to learn for sure. :burnout:

Thanks, Bob......  It was INTENSE for sure - never realized how many things there were to think about from start to finish.  By "start" I mean every little step involved just getting to the line - almost left without my visor down once (it was really, really hot)!!!

Something about riding to the track, making your runs, and riding back to the house seemed very satisfing - heck, I ended up with 115 miles for the evening!!!  More miles than a lot of (*non-Bandit) riders will do in a day!!

Thanks for the HONEST times! I think so many Bandit owners (myself included) like to think we can run 10's all day long. In reality, a stock Bandit will never see 10's. In all reality, it is a mid 11 to high 11 bike. And if you dont do your part, it is a low 12 bike.

Well I am going to the drag strip with my B12 this Friday.  My friend will be running his B12 as well.  Both of ours are naked but rider weight will be a difference of around 20-25 lbs.  I will report back next Saturday with our times.  I think he plans on running his bone stock.  I have  a holeshot high mount slip on and stage 1 modified jet kit.  I can't wait to see what happens.
