Title: Riding alone ?
Post by: 12sdrag on August 23, 2005, 11:09:13 PM
I know I like to ride with friends new ones and old ones. Sometimes I like to ride alone that is why I decided to ride my bike to Arkansas instead of trailering it there. Its almost like a personal conquest. You know can you make it kind of thing. The problem is my wife thinks it is too far to ride alone. Does any ones significant others have this same out look? She says she gets nervous when I`m away on long trips in the truck or the bike. I told her it is just something I have to do. Any comments? She did say, Do what you think you need to do!

I've taken many solo trips to Arkansas on my bike. Now that my wife has become a better rider she usually goes with me. We met a guy from Oklahoma City on our way out to Laguna Seca who was riding out to the races alone on his Busa and then heading out to Alaska after the races. There's nothing wrong with riding alone as long as you keep the throttle in check and keep the maintenence up on your bike.

I'm with you guys.  I like to ride alone often.  I do make sure bike is up to scratch and I always carry a fully charged mobile phone just in case.  My better half accually understands that it is just something that I need to do now and again, it is good to rely on just myself for a change.

I envy you guys, I can't ride alone.  If I'm going on a ride that looks like it'll have some good twisties then the wife decides that it looks like fun and joins me on her bike....if the wifes coming that means it must be a good ride, so the kids reckon that they shouldn't miss out either.

So in the end my 'Ride Alone' becomes a family trip.....the good thing about family trips on bikes....you can't hear the kids complaining.

Love my wife dearly. She is an accomplished rider (her and her Sportster kept up with the Bandits at the BOSS this year) and it nice having her as a riding partner. But like you said, sometimes you just gotta head out by yourself. It’s happens about every other year. I’ll tell Susie, “I need a ride.” ” Which is the short version of,  I need to travel a long distance to nowhere. She understands and wishes me well and to be careful. I am a blessed man. I have motorcycles, a wife that rides and understands. Life is good.

my wife has a somewhat similar view.  i mostly ride alone, but have a few groups i ride with now and then.  if i'm with the group, an all day or weekend ride doesn't seem to get her thinking, but if i even go out all day by myself, she expects like 5 phone calls and gets all worried. i just deal and call.  i need to stop and stretch the legs anyway right?

I'm sort of the opposite here.  I've never been in a group larger than three, me, my wife and my brother.  The majority of the time I'm by myself, especially now with the pregnant wife and my brother living in ohio.

Aussiebandit, I envy you!!  My wife does ride but with a 5 week old it is a little hard for her to find time.  I have 4 kids total and can't wait until they can all tag along on family riding weekends.

JR, tell her there are a couple of local exotic dancers who are riding to Arkansas, and want you to ride with them.
She'll let you ride alone...may insist on it!

It could be a nice trip, if you cut across the woods at least through Nashville.   Maybe cut across the VA panhandle, southern KY.....

There may be something in there about a requirement not to return, too...

Seriously, tell her you've developed a support network on this board.
I doubt you'll ever be farther than 50 miles from some member at any time between VA and Arkansas.
Worse comes to worse, maybe ride half way alone, and meet up with somebody else riding there.   The most boring part of the trip would be between middle tennessee, and the first 100 miles or so in Arkansas.

I've met quite a few of the people doing the Arkansas trip.  I can vouch for some of them!

As you guys know, I've only had my B12 for a short time...but today was the first day I've driven my truck since I made that purchase!  Had to move a welder up to the pump house.
I do lots of Solo rides, it's nice to turn off where I decide, try a new road at a moments notice, I don't have to wait for someone else to gear up/gas up/get up.  I just go....
That said, I still look for a partner now and again.

As much as I love riding with my mates and the minister of war (she whom must be obeyed). Every now and then I find a good long ride on me pat malone, is good for attitude adjustments, soul searching, and generally good for keeping my head together.
I once had a boss who would see the stress levels rising, and would pay me to go have an attitude adjustment. ( Man that boss was really cool)

so JR, planning to ride now?  it should be a good time of the year considering the weather.  If you have the time, would be fun to go for it.

have a safe ride and will see you there.

Well, I can hardly get an attitude adjustment riding courier work in the CBD. :crybaby: I could however nick off early, problem is, no pay.
And the other work don't pay while i'm out having fun. :crybaby:
And i'm a real prick to work for, just ask me. :duh:

All great responses thanks for the feed back. The wife says ride if you want. 1100 miles in two days. I have a list of pros and cons, its about 50/50. I guess i`ll have to flip a quarter? Oh well, either way at least I get to go on a cool trip.

Do it! You've gotta give it a try at least once to see if it's for you or not, and 550 mile days are pretty easy to do on a Bandit.

I bought my B12 in August of 01 and have put 34,000 miles on it and another 12,000 miles on my KLR during that same period of time.  Ninety per cent of it has been alone.  Sure something can happen to you out there, but if you are on a motorcycle, you are part of a unique fraternity that willing lends a helping hand.  Twice, when I have been stranded with serious breakdowns, total strangers have stopped to see if they could help because they too were motorcycle riders and then gone home to get their motorcycle trailers and haul my bike to a place I could get assistance.  It's hard to beat that kind of camaraderie.  However, the next long trip I make, I will buy into a road side service.

I`m going to ride my bike to AR. I`m not the problem. The wife is the one Who thinks it`s to far. But she`s cool now. Looking forward to the 1100 miles alone. :bigok:
