Man Killed By Falling Tree Limb In Shelton

SHELTON, Conn. -- A bizarre motorcycle accident killed a man in Shelton Monday.
Police said a man was driving his motorcycle up Huntington Street Monday afternoon and as he was going past a tree, a limb fell off the tree and hit him in the head knocking his helmet off, and knocking the man off his bike, NBC 30 reported.

The man was dead when police arrived at the scene.
The victim is a 57-year-old man from Trumbull. Police are not releasing his name until his family is notified.
The road will be closed for several hours while police continue their investigation.

Must have been a pretty big limb to knock his helmet off. Or he didn't have it on right. That sucks.

That happened to me - almost - not dead - and it was on a carbon fiber Trek. I was doing my lunch sprints and then I was in the ER. Motorist said it was the weirdest thing. He was about 100 feet behind me when a large branch fell taking me out. I was doing about 28 mph. Colar bone broken in two places, puncture lung, fracture shoulder blade, chrushed left arm and entire left rib cage broken (front and back) free. Hurt like the dickens. Was on a back road and he was probrably the only motorist that day. He called 911 and picked up my bike. Yea freeky things can happen.

In the local news lately was something similar.
A lady was in her yard, talking to a neighbor over the fence, when a branch broke, and fell on her head....killing her.
I guess when you see the damage they do to houses and cars, you can understand how they can take out a person.
I kind of wonder if I'd stand still when I heard a branch breaking over my head, though. You'd think they'd make some noise... :duh:

Often they are what they call in the timber industry, widow-makers. A limb, and can a realy large limb, has broken in the past, fallen part way down an then became hung-up just waiting as the stresses of gravity continue to pull and supporting branches begin to yeild util they fall, often only producing a rustling of the branches.
I had a good friend killed in HS. Big yellow Lab in the neighbor hood ran out infront of him.
I always like to say to those who say the are "safe riders" no such thing, only cautious riders. If you ride you are not safe. I have been hit five times, once by a fellow biker. Three times while at a stop sign. Riding in traffic is like playing foot ball and once ya get the ball all your team mates switch over to the other team. They are all out to get ya. Of course I have been riding over 30 years and have logged close to 400k mile. Two wheels has always been the way to travel, rain or shine, even snow.

I guess that could account for the lack of noise. I was picturing a branch breaking off from a tree.....not one barely hanging up there! :duh:
