Wakeup Call

Some of you may know that I am a police supervisor in Indiana. On Thursday, there were two fatal motorcycle crashes in my area. Neither crash was the fault of the rider.

In the first crash. a drunk/drugged nutjob was passing traffic on a hill, at night, at a high rate of speed. He hit a 19 year old kid head on while he was riding his crotch rocket along a local highway. Witnesses described the motorcycle as having "exploded" on impact.

In the next crash, a 17 year old girl made a left turn in front of a guy riding his Sportster through a congested intersection.

The point of this posting is to remind all of you to watch your surroundings. Some people are retarded. Don't trust them to yield even if you have the right of way. Plan ahead while riding and always have a way out.

God only knows what would have helped the kid on the crotch rocket. I bet I avoid two crashes a week by seeing people in cars before they see me. Just be careful!

Thanks, man.

Helluva thing.

I rode out west this summer and my wife travelled along with her suv.  I made her go in front cuz a young kid i knew had just been killed on his bike right in front of his parents car.  Still think about that all the time.

I'm from the same town as WeinerDogBone, and there was another one in our area about a year ago -- drunk on a suspended license plowed through a group of two or three riders. :duh: I think one's still comatose, and another's an amputee (one leg AND one arm, IIRC).

I'm only 30 and have already concluded that no matter how trusting you or I may be in other parts of our lives, the ONLY day-to-day philosophy for riding a cycle is, "People are dumb; trust no one." Sad but true.

Five vehicles for two drivers?  Sounds about right to me....
