I finally got a new scoot...
2006 KTM 450XC
(http://www.4strokes.com/models/ktm/2006/images/450xcg.jpg)
Not streetable yet, but has the electrical capacity and wiring to run dual sport lights. It's also one of the only dirtbikes sold in the USA that comes with a 17 digit untainted VIN and no "off road only" crap on the MSO, so registration shouldn't be too difficult... I hope.
I put about an hour on it so far. What a brute, and it's "only" a 450.
Now I just need a super motard setup! :bigok:

Welcome to the dirt side. Good choice.
-
Nice! I'm partial to the 950s, myself. One of these days I may have to get me one of them KTM scooters.
Had access to one many years ago...
Engine wasn't as big as yours, though.

Yes, that blue thing is a KTM! :stickpoke:

Sha-weet! Way to go, Manny. :congrats:
-
Oh, it's got electric start too
About 250lbs wet and 50hp to the rear wheel.
Brembo brakes, hydraulic clutch and enough suspension adjustability to make your eyes water.
Dealer's wrench went though it all with me, set the suspension sag and rejetted it for free. It's a whole different experience than at a normal dealer. A difference I can get used to. Too bad the fee to get in the proverbial door is so steep.
Dirtbikes shouldn't cost more than street bikes.
But, you get what you pay for.

Mighty fine Manny. :beers:

Nice bike, my brother in law owns/runs jd jetting and just picked one up for further r & d on his new kit. Its more than just jetting, he makes a custom tapered needle which really dials things in. Check his site at jdjetting.com. He makes these four strokes run sweet!
-
Sweeet ! Get a tag for it and let's hookup at next year's Hooch dual sport ride.

A friend/co-worker bought a 450EXC with the KTM Street and Supermoto kits a few months ago. He had no problems getting it licensed for the street - but then he had it converted & licensed at purchase.
(He's got all the dirt bike goodies, too.)
-
It's about time, Manfred!
You didn't go to the same dealer who pissed you off a couple of years ago?

I've heard that JD is the only way to go for these bikes. He gets lots of props on ktmtalk.com!

Let me know if you want to take it for a romp some time lloyd!

Nope, it's a brand new shop run by the most profesional crew I've ever dealt with for any purchase. And that says a lot coming from me.

Nice bike, I have been trying to get a quote from a local dealer on a 625 smc but haven't heard back from them. I may just have to go the route you went and get the wheels and conversion pieces myself.
If you don't mind, would you pm me a ballpark figure of what it cost you so I'll know what i'm looking at spending.

On the jetting, send him an email. He goes by James Dean. He just got his '06 450 and has a new dyno with exhaust analyzer. He should have some real good settings here shortly. The nice thing about all the new 4 strokes is that they all share the same Keihin carb so he has lots of r & d time on this.

Josh,
The 625 SMC is a great bike, but it's hard to find and a 100lbs heavier than the FSR (450 & 525). You won't get a 625 for under $8000 + tax.
You can get the 450 & 525 for around $7000 + tax if you find some. Then it'll cost you another $1500 to do a full motard conversion, so you end up around the same price, but with a bike that's 100lbs lighter and still a great dirtbike, which the SMC is not.
They are almost impossible to find used and hold their value very well.

Thanks manny, hearing your input is a hell of alot better than hearing one of the local stealers. They just wanna know when you want to sign, don't care about what your looking for as long as your buying from them. I don't know how far woodstock is from here, but it can't be too far. After your reccomendation I may make the drive when i'm ready to buy.
Thanks, Josh

Way to go Manny! I remember that you've had your eye on one for like . . . a YEAR or so. I also remember the crappy dealer experience.
Nice ride, man! :congrats:

I was in Orlando all week for meetings. Now I'm finally back home after daydreaming about riding all week and now it's 48*F and raining. I don't mind the cold but the rain I can do without. I already have a cold :duh:
-
No rain ! Come on Manny, dirt riders eat mud and cold for breakfast. LOL! Just ribbin ya' :stickpoke:
So, whens the first bent handle bar incident going to take place. Let us know. You know it's inevitable on a dirt bike
Serously, nice bike, I hope you enjoy the heck out of it...... Thats an awsome dirt machine. :bigok:

Just a bent bar isn't good enough, you gotta do it right. Bars, number plates(sides) and back fender at least :stickpoke: There is nothing like watching your bike go flipping end over end downhill for about 50-60 ft, It will make you sick to your stomach. The good thing is, a dirt bike is tough and usually a couple pieces of plastic and some bars and it's good to go again. Also, i've done some research on the hardness factor of dirt vs. asphalt and it's unanimous, dirt is softer :duh:

I did the first service on the new bike this week. It's all pretty sweet. Valves have the same screw-with-locknut setup on the rockers that the Bandit has and they are pretty easy to get to and work on. Only drawback is that it's a lot easier to do the exhaust valves if you dump the coolant and remove both radiators. Sounds crazy, but it is actually quick and easy to do.

Oil change was a little more involved than normal as there are two cleanable mesh screen filters and two paper filters. Yes, that's FOUR filters altogether to clean 1.2L of oil... oh, and a magnetic drainplug.
Did I mention it pulls wheelies in 4th!!

Pretty damn close.
Where I'm from in Bavaria is less than an hour from the KTM factory in Austria. The border is 10 minutes away.
