Title: What Whould I Do With The Scratches On My New Baby?
Post by: jbrough7 on April 29, 2006, 07:02:29 AM
Few scratches and nicks just above the 'bandit' sticker on the left side--tried waxing and it helped a bit but you can still see 'em....all grouped in an area that's maybe six inches long by 3 inches wide.  A couple of tiny ones go through to the undercoat....

Dude, I told you what to do.  Touch it up for now, ask for a new left fairing for Christmas.  Be sure to give the wife the part number and what dealer or website to go to.  The fairing half will come painted/clearcoated with decals already applied.

Then save the old one for when you bust the sh!t out of the new one!

Or watch eBay for the appropriate part to show up and pick it up cheap.  Just a matter of waiting.  As your bike gets older, eBay will become your 2nd wife.

Desolation:  just what I need!  another wife!

Wonder how those mormon dudes get along?  Some days (and nights) i think that might be pretty cool.

the plastic will buff out if there is any paint left.  You'll need to use several waxes & polishes.

If you have to paint, the air brush sounds like a good idea.  Buying a pint of paint will cost lots.  For example to paint one plastic panel, the paint will cost nearly as much as buying the panel from the dealer.  Of ourse you'll have enough paint left for other work.

Decals are always a good fallback.

Also, I've had really good luck with a flat black Sharpie pen. Depends on the color, but it does a great job with the Bandit candy apple red.  You might have luck with other pen color combinations depending on your color. For some reason the flat black disapears with the red.

I voted "leave 'em alone"...for now.  Wait until you have some REAL damage to buy new fairings.  They ain't cheap.  If you can't see black plastic under the paint, they aren't that bad.

I've done the sharpie repair, too.

I've dropped mine twice on my left side.

I'm a perfectionist and replaced any part that was broken or even had a scratch on it.

Bill for the 2 drops?  $1800.00

Sick, huh?

Mine had a small rub on the tail section from the previous owner (supposedly some plywood fell over on it in his garage). I dabbed them in with some PPG silver that I had from touching up my car (Amazingly enough REAL close color match.)
It's not gonna matter soon. The next time the forcast calls for more than 2 consecutive days of rain, I'm gonna paint it anyways.

I just can't leave this damn thing alone.......

I *really* understand what you mean...I think I've bought that bike twice over.

I got you all beat!  Winter of '04 I put aside enough money to buy a new black tank and bodywork for my Bandit.  I was going to do the Dale Walker look, you know, red frame with black tank, black fairing, black grab handle and tail cowl.  But I haven't pulled the trigger on it, yet.  Money is still there, but I'm waiting for the urge to get so bad that I can't hold back anymore!

The wife keeps telling me how much she likes the dark candy red look.  I think it's working on me subconsciously.

Tell me all gloss black with the red frame and seat trim on this bike wouldn't look cool!

You and me are both too worried about looks.  But the consolation for me is that you are WAY worse than I am.

Well, the black bodywork with a red frame is an option on the '06 in some markets...

WOW!  That is a nice rear end on that bike.  Wish they were selling an '06 here.  it's almost the right year for me to add to the collection.

It's funny - I really wanted the all black 650 but my dealer had just sold his last one - I thought the contrasting red frame in front of the lack engine made the red bike look 'cheap'.

Bought the red one and now I never notice and the bike looks fantastic to me...

Come out of work and see her and my heart always jumps a bit...maybe I should go see the doc and have a checkup?

BTW, I looked for a new bike for about a year...sat on a hundred bikes at a toronto bike show and just reread an old posting about that from another site - at that time, i narrowed my choice down to four bikes (all suzukis!) and the bandit was the clear favourite.  I just had to wait for the dealer to drop $2000 off list and i was ready to go.

Good price.  Good discount.

I picked my 1200 up off eBay for $2,900 in '04.  A Kawa dealer had it at Xmas time and evidently wanted it out of inventory real bad.  I've always felt like I made out like a bandit!
