Title: Where have you ridden?
Post by: Pillage on January 13, 2008, 12:53:36 PM
Where have you ridden? (In the USA & Canada anyway)
This was recently posted on TheGSResources forum...

You can add a small map of where you have ridden on your bike to your signature line. Be sure to keep it to the small size when you create it as a courtesy to others.

First go here is if you're in the states
http://www.epgsoft.com/VisitedStatesMap/index.html]US Map
or here if your a Canuck.
http://www.epgsoft.com/VisitedStatesMap/VisitedProvinces.html]Canada Map

Next, check the boxes of the states or provinces you have ridden in.

Next, choose the SMALL map size under the states boxes.
Skip any other steps except to "Create Map" button.

You will see your map with states colored in that you selected. RIGHT click your mouse on the map and select "Save Image As" from the pop-up box. Put it somewhere you can find it later.

Next, upload it Photobucket or where ever you keep photo's online.

You can edit your signature line using the proper link buttons,

Remember, just bikes, no cages please to keep it interesting.

Cool idea!  :bigok:

Now I just need to make my States & Provinces Riden maps:

(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d35/paulweit/Personal/statesriden.jpg) (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d35/paulweit/Personal/ProvincesRiden.jpg)

match the ones I've visited (didn't count states visited only in airport terminals):

HA HA!  OK, here goes:

States in which I've resided:

States I've *never* visited (like Paul, not counting airport layovers):

States I've ridden:

I wish they offered something other than those Partridge Family bus colors.  And no, I'm not gonna recolor it by hand.

Here's where I've ridden however New Mexico was 20 years ago......

On the other hand... I did do this in less than three years using all the rest - just hit it today.

Random Rules!  Let's ride all the states in color order!   Blue > Green > Orange > Purple > Red > Yellow.  No trailering between states, you must sell the bike and buy another one.

I'm a little slanted to the Pacific NW, as I have only ridden in Northern California, Western Montana and Western Wyoming. I rented a bike in Arizona in Nov, so that helps...

How the hell did you skip over New Mexico?  It's such a beautiful state.

I will NEVER forget the first time I rode into NM just as the sun was setting.  That was one of the experiences that makes me chuckle when people ask me why I ride a motorcycle.

New Mexico sounds great, we plan on taking a tour of the USA after our daughter completes school.  We will definately ride NM.
BTW, I've noticed that not very many have ridden New England.  If any of you find your way here, I would be happy to lead a ride on some of the most beautiful twisty roads I have the pleasure of riding every year!   :beers:

Simple.  I am from California, lived in AZ, moved to TX, and then back to AZ.  The only reason I made it to NC was for a trip to meet up with some friends.

Wasn't me, but having ridden under the hot Florida sun, I bet it's much easier for us Northerners to ride with ATGATT than it is for you!
(ATGATT: All the gear all the time).

My post was perhaps a little ill-considered, and I certainly didn't mean to give offense.  Chalk it up to genuine surprise, as from the tone of your posts concerning gear I assumed you had a lot more experience.

No problem. Side-stepping the main topic here, I did a LOT of research on riding gear, after discovering by accident (fortunately not mine!) how essentially little-to-none protection my Joe Rocket Phoenix jacket and pants (my initial riding gear) offered. Here I was on my first day, thinking I was adequately protected:

Kinda goofy-looking, huh?  Man that bike looked great then, I really should give it a bath and a polish!

Because synthetics offer the ability to give you effective protection while allowing realistic ventilation for use in both hot and cold environments, I decided to look into what was out there and what and how it would provide whatever level of protection. Not that I don't use leather, as you can see here:

But of course that gets awfully hot when temps are above ~60°F (it was ~35°F in that shot)

Anyway I learned a lot about synthetics and denier densities and all that good stuff, and of course discovered that you have to pay a lot to get something that's going to give you some form of realistic protection and still allow you to ride in 100°F weather (as I did on a trip back from Boston 2 summers back) or 20°F (as I did last Sunday). In my case is was an $1100 Kevlar Motoport outfit, but as I had mentioned, the new Tourmaster outfit I linked in the previous thread looks very promising and is a hell of a lot less expensive. I may get one as an alt outfit.

Now getting back on this topic, I really like this little map thingie, I think it lots of fun and if nothing else inspires you to go out and ride so you can fill in more empty spaces!  :bandit:

When I got onto my first motorcycle "riding gear" consisted of jeans and maybe a generic leather jacket.  There was no such thing as purpose built apparel (unless you count the leather chaps and fringe genre) and certainly no armored clothing.

A lot of the "research" I've done since then has been the ass-in-the-saddle variety.  I've ridden in scorching heat in the desert in Arizona, 50mph winds in Death Valley, snow in the mountains west of Las Vegas, rain on the Dragon, sleet and snow south of Buffalo, and tropical thunderstorms here in FL.  There wasn't (and isn't) any single choice of gear that worked in all those situations, and I have never been able to wear anything that isn't perforated (leather or textile) in the summer in Florida.

Experience shapes opinion.  Mine is that riding gear is and will always be a balance between cost, individual comfort, and protection.  The most protective gear in the world is useless if it's too hot or uncomfortable to ride (or isn't in your closet 'cause you can't afford it!)  All I'm saying is don't be too quick to criticize other people's gear choices, until you've walked a mile in their shoes (or ridden a mile in their boots .)

Lest this be misunderstood, I want to state unequivocally that I respect and appreciate your opinion.  You've obviously done a lot of research and tried different things.  If you expand your map down to Florida, I'll buy you a beer and then we can go drag our gear around a parking lot!!

>>Cool pic!<<

Thanks. I had fun doing that shoot, although I needed more frontal light power. I was going to dump that shot until somebody told I look menacing in it. Then I liked it.

>>All I'm saying is don't be too quick to criticize other people's gear choices, until you've walked a mile in their shoes (or ridden a mile in their boots...<<

I wasn't really criticizing anyone in particular as I was the gear manufacturer. Hopefully we'll never need to know how well any of it works.

>>Lest this be misunderstood, I want to state unequivocally that I respect and appreciate your opinion. <<

And I respect yours, and those of others here, many who have acquired quite hardened asses.

>>If you expand your map down to Florida, I'll buy you a beer and then we can go drag our gear around a parking lot!!<<

Sounds like a plan.  :singing:  Now, if I could could only find a nice 99-02 SV650. While I have thought of taking the B4 really far, I think it may be a bit more comfortable on '650. :beers:

I'm genuinely impressed by how far some of you have managed to ride. I'm not going to bother putting up a map...as really a several provinces doesn't look very impressive. Here's the keeping my union job and thereby vacation...and eventually filling in those little blanks.

Unfortunately I've only ridden Long Island and Connecticut roads.  I always wanted to trailer the bike someplace and ride the state but never got around to it.  Once or twice I came real close to riding to Maine during my summer vacation up to the family cottage but the threat of consecutive rainy days squashed that.  I never even got up to Americade in Lake George.

I really don't the time or the expertise to criticize any one's gear that they have spent their hard earned money on. I do know that I had a little get-off around two (2) months ago and I was wearing a Joe Rocket Phoenix jacket and their 5.0 ballistic pants. Don't ever think that they don't offer protection. They do. If I had not had the gear on the road would have cut me a new a__hole. It tore and scraped the hell out of the ballistic material on the out side of the jacket and wore all the way through the CE armor that I had in the elbow on the right side. Imagine what I would of looked like had I not had on the terrible Joe Rocket gear...banditone1250s... :yikes:

I'll have to update my map!  Just got back today from 2,200+ loop across TN, into VA, WV and OH, and then back across KY.  That adds WV, OH and VA to my map, although I've lived in each of them before.

I've lived in California the whole time I've been riding seriously. Rode my Vmax down Hwy 1 from Washington to San Diego about 10 years ago. Goofed around in Texas as a teenager, but I only included that so I could show something besides the Best Coast.

Well the only thing that I have to add since last post is that a friend of mine and I rode to Indianapolis last year for the MoToGP race. We did a little country riding up in that area but spent, as expected, most of our time at the race track. The race itself was certainly burdened by the weather as that's about the time that the hurricane got to that part of the country and the wind was unbearable and it rained all the way to Indy (from Nashville), the entire time that we were there and all the way back with the exception of about one hour when we got  little closer to Nashville. Valentino Rossi won the race but the Kentucky Kid lead for most of the race. It was fun but it will have be more fun this year with the hope of some better weather...Banditone1250s...

There is a thin line between fear and respect...Feel free to drift across it every now and then...

You're in Tampa? Neat! I'm just north of Tampa, south of SR 54 and east of SR 41. I ride with the Southern Cruisers even tho they're mostly Harley. They have expressed amazement that the Bandit will loft the front wheel without major provocation.

So, if you're in my neighborhood, I'd like to meet up with you at some convenient place and perhaps we can ride together. Just name the place and the time.
