we Cowtowners get to go riding on Friday and Saturday !!!!

Temps are supposed to be in the +16C to +20C range (60F to 70F) finally. The glacier has melted away from the door of my garden shed so I'll drag #17 out on Friday and get her ready to rock. Now if I can stay away from all the gravel the city has spread on the roads for the last 5 months or so....
Of course, the weather forecast in Calgary is subject to hourly revisions so your mileage may vary.
See you on the road this weekend..... :beers:
-
UPDATE:
The big warm front has moved in faster than anticipated so we may get 3[/u] days riding in. See you on #762 !!!
  :beers:

LOL! We're hearing it might be here too. 12C on the plus side for us on sat. Gonna see if one or both bikes will fire up. The other half has already polluted the other shed with 2stroke fumes,.. so we know those are running. :duh:
watch the gravel, and have a ball!
-
762 come Sunday it is. It looks like we had better make the best of it, as the long range forcast has March going out like a Lion.
Actually made the run down to Longview two weeks ago and the roads were in good shape. There were several tax collectors out, in particular, one peeking out from behind the Redwood meadows sign. :monkeymoon:

Way to go "other half". He sounds like my kinda guy. I'm going to be getting my strokers fettled up here pretty quick too....
but the Bandit comes out first. As we all know, there's no substitute for cubic inches.....

I'll be keeping an eye out for them, Greyhound....especially on EITHER end and in the middle of #762. They like to hang out in all three places to try to confuse the squids....but we old dogs are wise to their tricks.
Gotta go and pull the Bandit out of the shed. Sun's out and it'll be nice to work on her in the sunshine.

I took my monster out for the first time last weekend...with the full exhaust and jet kit it pulls really hard now...
-
Way to go, Dreadnought....glad to hear the stuff is working for you.
OK....Here's how MY riding went....
Went for a short test hop on Friday and then CLEANED MY CHAIN !!! What an ugly boring messy job....but it had to be done and it looked SOOOOO much better when I got done.
Took her for another short spin to warm the chain up then lubed the dickens out of it with ChainWax Synthetic instead of the usual ChainWax Gold mineral oil-based stuff. The Synthetic seems to penetrate better than the Gold but we'll see how it works long-term.
Saturday was cloudy but warmish so I suited up with the "full Kilimanjaro" and ski pants because it CAN get coolish the closer you get to the mountains at this time of year.
Off southwards and glad of the clothing. As my nephew said during his first cross-country trip on an Intruder a few years ago: "There's a lot of wind out there, Uncle".....and sho 'nuff, there was !!!
The number of bikes on the road was positively staggering (for me, at least). Everyone and his brother was out for a ride !!!
I rode the #762 south-to-north and nary a "tax collector" in sight so was able to keep up a good speed over the whole road.....mostly 120+ km/hr (~75MPH) with a few bursts somewhat higher to pass the flocks of Hardly-Ablesons. The ones that tried to catch me soon got lost in the curves..
Good old #17 ran along without a hiccup although I know a tank of gas without stabilizer in it will do her no end of good....and the low-rent OE Dunlop rear tire is starting to look decidedly dodgy after 6100 km (~3800 miles).
I met up with a few guys I know at a coffee stop and yacked with them for awhile and then off home on the fairly boring return portion of the ride.
All in all a quite satisfying beginning-of-season ride. :beers:
How was YOUR Saturday ???
-
Eeeeh my Saturday wasn't nearly as good as that...spent the morning working around the house and then spent the afternoon installing a chain oiler on the big bad Dread...I may take the beast out tomorrow afternoon if I get the chance
-
Damn I'm glad to hear things are starting to warm up for you guys! 80°F (27°C) down here and I could not resist getting out to shoot some video before I got started on the honey do list today!

Way to go, Mongo !!! I dreamt I was there......
That's my kinda road. I woulda liked to have seen the final part where you were reeling in that cage and then when you ate him up.
I gotta get me a video cam, preferably one of the newer hard drive models. Then I can have some reminders of my favourite roads during our "no riding" season.
This week has a mixed bag of weather but it looks like I may/may get another ride in on Friday.....if the weather-guessers have got it correct. Well, we'll see....

I lived in Ventura for 25 years, and rode all the roads Ventura, Ojai and Santa Barbara. Very simular roads, but I couldn't tell where you were

I don't think you want a harddrive model. Harddrives don't like vibration and impact, especially when running. They're fine for moderate walking, but I wouldn't think they'll hold up to a bike for too long, cushioning or no. They seem to me to be best used on a tripod, where they won't be moving a lot.
I personally have the miniDV style. They're cheap, and if anyone wants, I can post a tutorial on how to convert from miniDV to a DVD to watch whenever you want on the TV.
-
EXXXXXelent Mongo. Love the music.

Hmmmm.....hadn't thought that they'd be that delicate, Stormi.
Okay, is anyone offering a solid state memory model with NO moving parts yet ??

A harddrive is similar to a record. It has a needle ( called a head in the case of a harddrive) and a record, referred to as a platter, or a disk. The difference between them, is that the head floats about 1 air molecule about the platter, rather than how a record works - as in riding in a groove.
The head is never meant to touch the platter. Impact and vibration changes that dynamic. Every time the head touches the platter, physical damage occurs. Data is lost, permanently.
I don't know of a solid state at this time,.. but I haven't looked for a long time. The reason I like the tapes, is that mechanism doesn't care much about vibration. (Think of jogging with a walkman.)
The miniDV tapes store an insane amount of data, they are capable of being "true masters", unlike a DVD, which stores only one full frame every few frames, then only changes in between.

If you were to take the 126 east to Magic Mountain you would have been in my back yard! This is what we like to call the short loop it's a good way to kill an hour and it's just down the road from the house in Angles National Forrest!

Stormi is very correct I made the mistake of buying a hard drive camera and quickly found out they don't like the harmonics of the bike!
I picked up a mini DV for $300 and it works great! The next purchase will be a CCD camera to mount on the helmet or to do some shots from various locations on the bike!

Thank you, Stormi and Mongo, for raising my "video cam consciousness".
You guys have taught me more in 4 or 5 sentences than I could have learned from some nitwit salesman in a month.
Now I just have to go looking and find something on sale. After all, why pay big bucks for something that MAY end up sliding down the road.....right??!!??

Bingo!! Just try to get one with a input jack ( the name of it escapes me right now ( really bad day...) but I'm sure Mongo knows what I'm talking about) so that down the road you can attach a bullet cam if you choose to.

I think your talking about the AV (audio/video) plug most cameras will come with them but not all will receive a signal! My JVC also comes with a USB connection (the camera has a memory card slot for still photos, great option no need to carry two cameras) and a DV connection that sends a digital video signal to the computer.
I picked up a card for my computer with software for under $150 that has a set up for fire wire to the DV. An input for analog signal for the AV connection also works for the old VHS and an S-Video slot.

That's the one. Some of them don't receive by default, because they're set to output. On my Canon, it's a toggle. Setting one, it inputs from a bulletcam or VCR, setting 2, it outputs to the TV. Worth looking into. If the camera can record from a VCR or other source, you should be able to use a bulletcam with it.
Here's a link with a bit of information:
http://www.bulletcam.com/requirements.htm
and a good list of some compatible cameras. I doubt it's exhaustive, but it should give you a good indication of brands that play nice:

You should be able to get a firewire card for under $50 (cdn) and a lot of the software tools that I use, are free. If you want more info, let me know, I'll dig up the info. (It's been a while, so I'd have to look for the stuff that I use.) Also,.. some cameras, like my Canon, come with enough software that you don't need to buy any.

I use to work in the oil field around Magic Mountian, but I never road my bike over there. All of the So. Calif mountian roads are great riding, if you don't hit a rock in the road. :duh:

Thanks for that list now I need another camera and the helmet camera! I really hate when that happens!

I hadn't, no...
It's not a bad idea for someone who hasn't got any of the set up. My thing would be that flash media can be a real PITA, because it tends to corrupt. It would really suck to have that happen after recording a once in a lifetime ride...
