Hello everyone,

I've read all the FAQs and searched and probably read up to page 100 of this forum to no avail.   From reading here and on some other forums I realize the GSX-R400 while having largely the same engine as the Bandit 400, has a different oilpan which affects exhaust clearance and so using a GSX-R400 exhaust will often require use of the GSX-R oilpan.

What about exhaust compatibility between the 1st and 2nd generation of Bandit 400s?  Is there anything stopping an exhaust for one from bolting up to the other?  (or from a Bandit 250 to 400 for that matter, as I think the engines are much the same externally)

Sourcing a used exhaust is tough for these things. :)

Why do you want a full exhaust?
You can also just chop off the muffler/silencer and replace it with an aftermarket one.

exhausts from different bandit years should be compatible. i don't recommend mounting 250 exhaust to 400. most probably it will throttle down the engine. cutting stock muffler and using aftermarket is good option.

Thanks to both of you - i'm aware of the process for a slip-on, but my primary tubes have some damage and I'd prefer to just replace the whole thing if I could.

From what I've managed to glean from specifications of the various full systems still available in Japan - the primary tube diameter they use tends to be the same on both the Bandit 250 and Bandit 400 exhausts (35mm in most cases), so I'm not too worried about a 250 system choking the 400 off - just wanted to make sure the fitment would actually work and the mounting points were all the same.

Since the 250 has a significantly shorter stroke, if the deck height/engine block was shorter, then an exhaust for the 250 might hit the oilpan on a 400 - that's one of the bits I don't know. :)

In that case I'd recommend just buying a used original full exhaust set and a separate aftermarket slip-on.

Or, let someone blast fix your old exhaust.

Either way it'll probably be cheaper and easier to find. Full aftermarket exhaust sets for the 400 are rare and expensive... but who knows.

Where are you based T, UK USA?
I have spare pipes but I live in the UK.

I'm pretty sure 1st and 2nd gen exhausts are the same.
You may get an aftermarket Yoshi system from yahoo auction Japan if you have a buyer BUT its expensive to get them.

I'm in Canada - I really want to spend the $ and get a full system (either used or new, NOT OEM) - Webike in Japan has plenty, although they list some that the manufacturer says are only for the Bandit 250 as fitting the 400 and they seem to think that some for the later 400s fit the earlier, which is why I wanted to check to see if anyone's ever swapped and confirmed fitment.

I don't have a center stand anymore on my JDM bike (it's been removed by previous owner) so no need for the provision for that.

The M-Tec systems are pretty basic, and not very pretty, but they're light, well-flowing 4-1 systems and include the end can and even a removable baffle.  Perfect to swap on for track days/weekends and $299USD shipped for the entire thing.   Plus I won't feel bad when I drill/weld/hack it up for a wideband O2.

If you can get a Yoshi or Yamamoto they are well made and importantly make good power, have a look on yahoo auctions , if you can find a good deal and have PayPal its simple to get one.
I have a buyer in Tokio who can sort a pipe foe you no problem, I buy loads of stuff.

Thank-you Chris for all the advice - I've bought from Japan before many times, but always directly from places that ship internationally like Webike.   I like the look of that Yosh exhaust, and the price is right (so far anyway), although the fact that it's listed for a GK74A is slightly worrying (isn't that the GSX400? - same engine but possibly different frame/oilpan/rear mount?)

Thinking about signing up for either Buyee or Japan Auction Agency(JAA) to bid on it, if it'll fit my '91 400V :)
(unless your guy would be willing to buy/ship it to me for cheaper than them (they charge ~10-15%) or you have anything better in mind)


.... edit - interesting, the Yosh Cyclone ones designed for the GK75A have huge.... crossover tubes?  Expansion chambers? right behind the primaries near the head ports.  Not sure whether that makes 'em better or worse.

Not sure about the one I posted, I just searched for bandit400 and saw the 400v in the listing, certainly looks like a b4 pipe with it kicking to the left and having the stand stop but like the one you posted they usually have the sprung scavenging pipes that Suzuki also uses on the gk73a, look quite trick when fitted.

I always use moriwaki man who is a Scottish guy that lives in Japan and specializes in bike parts from yahoo, his name is Drew and he has a website under moriwaki man, Drew is very reliable, packages thinks correctly and although it's a little expensive sends parts out 'ems' so it gets to you and you can track etc, well worth it.

That yosh pipe is the holy grail of all
Pipes! Very very hard to find in any shape. It's called a duplex pipe and the tube help broaden the power band better than a 4 into 2 into 1

So I suppose to answer my own question, I bought an exhaust for a GK7AA (2nd gen) Bandit 400 because it was gorgeous and I couldn't say no.   It's a BEET Racing Titanium exhaust with a carbon covered end can.   I didn't like the Yosh duplex exhausts because the spring loaded canisters connecting the primaries together seemed prone to corrosion, breakage, and leaks.   As soon as I saw the BEET exhast, I knew I had to have it.

The mount for the end can doesn't line up with the mount for my '91, and there's a big tab welded in the center of the collector/link pipe that doesn't attach to anything on my bike.   I'll probably fab up a bracket soon to tie into it from the engine mount bolt that's closeby, as I don't want to stress it any more than I have to, being super thin titanium and all:



Primaries and collector are spectacularly smooth, with no steps or intrustions into the airstream anywhere.  Welds are gorgeous, and the crossover tubes in the primaries are super smooth, and being welded they wont' be leaking or corroding any time soon.   The header and collector pipes are almost impossibly light (being made from Titanium and all), although the carbon end can had to conform to Japanese sound regulations and so is enormous and heavy.  I'll probably switch the end can out soon.

First impressions are that it's barely louder than stock at idle, with a nice growl once the revs get higher.

For reference, I weight the entire stock exhaust system (since it's one complete welded piece) as ~21lbs on my bathroom scale, or 9.5kg.

The BEET system is:

Header for 1-2 - 570g
Header for 3-4 - 576g
Collector and link pipe - 673g
Total header weight to end can - 1819g - almost exactly 4lbs.

Carbon wrapped JMCA compliant end can - 3173g (almost exactly 7lbs!)

Even with what feels like the world's heaviest muffler, it's still pretty close to half the weight of the stock unit.

On the plus side, the can is very easy to swap out, and is just clamped on, so swapping from the nice street-friendly can to a superlight aftermarket carbon or moto-gp style one that only weighs a pound or three is just two bolts and a minute or two worth of work, so very easy to do for a weekend canyon run, track day, etc. - unlike the stock one-piece unit.

Ive a ti beet on my vvc and they are mint, the best available in my eyes.
Swap the can out for a race one, they arnt too loud, I do alot of track days and have no problems with noise, think its 86db open.

The early model beet doesn't have tab welded on near the stand and is simply held by the end can.

Enjoy, new they cost more than the rest of the bike.

Clearly the previous owner of the Beet system put little to no mileage on the pipe - even though it had some soot inside, it was a very uniform colour throughout.

After about 1500km of road tripping, that's no longer the case and the colour now looks spectacular. :)
