We had 7 inches of snow down here in Lafayette last week. I don't think I'd want to be in the region for the winter.

I'm spending my free time working on the bike in the  garage. :beers:

Thanks — the "Wabash" is actually for Wabash College, 30 miles south in Crawfordsville, but it's still a pretty good regional clue.

Wouldn't suppose any locals know anything of the history of the low-mileage '03 B1200S over at Phoenix?  Unless some better bargain leaps out before tomorrow (quite unlikely), looks like the '85 Kawasaki 454LTD will become my wife's learner and I'll be stepping up in a big way. Anyone around here the original owner, by any chance?  Looks like it's bone-stock except for a throttle lock.

It'll be a big jump, but I've ridden off and on since '99, I've done ABATE (and plan to do so again this summer), and I'm enough of a grown-up that I'm not going to feel compelled to twist the throttle just because it's there.  Maybe I can even set a positive example for a friend of mine who's starting to act borderline "squidly" on his R6....

I bought my B12 from Phoenix. They have always been very good to me. Just as a coincidence, My late father in law taught Econ at Wabash.

I bet you'll find that the B12 is pretty tame unless you want to get crazy with the throttle.

Yeah, the test-ride impressed me with how docile and civilized it is under part-throttle. I could tell it's painfully lean stock, but aside from a slow warm-up even on a hot day, it was fine. And considering the power jump from an older 450, I doubt I'd feel compelled to do the pipe-and-jet this season. ;)

Complicating the decision is a very clean '01 ZR-7S I've found in the southern part of the state for a couple thou less.  Odds are I go B12 anyway -- I feel ready for a "keep-forever" bike.

Anyone willing to share what Tippecanoe County charges to plate a late-model B12?  It's not a big concern of mine, but nice to know in advance....[/quote]

I think it's about $80.00 a year after you get stroked for your orignal sales tax and a $20.00 wheel tax. Oh yeah, they also get you for a new title charge which is $10.00 I think and the cost of the actual metal plate which is $9.00 if memory serves. You are looking at $119.00 plus some more taxes. I'm thinking $200.00 to $250.00 total. Sucks doesn't it.

Well, I'll find out about plate fees soon enough — we got it last night, and have already put about 100 miles on it (mostly solo, but a little two-up with my wife).  Wow — what a versatile, comfortable, do-everything machine!  Gratuitous photo, just for fun:

The only glitch is that under very light throttle and low engine speeds, it kind of "chugs" or "chuffs" along, wanting to be downshifted one gear.  If it weren't such a powerful bike, I'd think I was lugging the engine a bit, but I don't think that's it — this happens on level roads around 2,000 rpm, when it idles at a pretty solid 1,400 to 1,500 rpm warm, and any acceleration pulls smoothly even from down low like that.  Is that just a little "lean surging," or is something else going on?

I'll keep my eye out for other local Banditos, and for awhile, you'll know me by the paper delaer-temp plate!

Hey!  You got the best color of all, too.  Congrats!

As far as the engine goes... it's disgustingly lean in stock form - which yours looks like it is.  Get an aftermarket exhaust (Yosh, Holeshot, etc.) and Ivan's or Dale Walker's Stage 1 jet kit and it'll be a completely unleashed beast.

Also, If it hasn't been done yet, I would replace the stock MacCrapAdam tires.  They'll last forever but grip is non-existent.

Here's my '03 with a Yosh RS-3 exhaust & Ivan's jet kit...

Thanks for the welcome!  I've always liked that the G2s looks sporty without being boy-racer or crotch-rocket.  That deep green just makes them look that much more grown-up and low-key. Still grinning!

Unless the lean stumble really starts bothering me, I think the pipe/jetting will stay stock this season. Coming from a 45-hp twin, even a factory-lean B12 still feels gutsy as heck!  I might as well save that "hidden" 15-20 hp for after I've gotten more familiar with the bike (though I'm already amazingly at-home on it).  But next season, a pipe/jet seems likely, and I like the looks of Ivan's kit....

For tires, I'm more sport-touring oriented, so I'll see how the stockers feel as my comfort level improves.  A few posters on here say that some Shinkos are a surprising bang-for-the-buck deal -- any local experience with them?

I got the Shinko Advance 005's (Sport tires) for $150 a pair shipped last year from here:

http://store.azmusa.com/shink-005.html

So far I love 'em.  Makes it a whole new bike handling-wise.

The Shinko Raven 009's (Sport/Touring tires) are also highly thought of.

A little "surging", as you call it, is not uncommon on this bike. You can also fix that stumble with a pilot screw adjustment. I can help you with that sometime if you decide you want it.

That would be great!  I still haven't even read over the owner's manual yet to get familiar with anything more in-depth than the idle-speed thumbscrew.  With all this rain, looks like I should have plenty of opportunity before the next ride....

Just had to say "wow" again.  The threatening weather yesterday forced me to cut my planned Lafayette-Indy trip short at Whitestown -- but MAN, these things sport-tour! Very comfortable, very stable, everything nice and linear, including the engine's delivery of insane power.  These things really are about the best bargain in the cycle world, aren't they?!?

They were until the brilliant minds at Suzuki decided to stop selling them in the USA.  :stickpoke:

...though in fairness, I thought they were discontinued because they can't (or soon won't) be able to meet emissions standards without going to fuel injection. (Lord knows they've limped along with lean jetting about as far as humanly possible!)

Hey, WienerDogBone, is your B12S the blue/white scheme?  I saw one westbound on 26 near the intersection with Creasy yesterday evening, probably about 7:30. Rider was helmeted (matching the bike, IIRC?) with I think a green t-shirt....  If so, nice bike!  (I was driving the VW GTI, so no reason you would've noticed me.)

Wasn't me. Mine is an 02 that is dark blue w/goofy racing paint on the fairing. I friend of mine painted the faring for me. He is a race car painter and he kind of went overboard. Now I have to wreck it to change the paint I guess.

Anyway, I digress. My B12 has a checkerboard pattern painted on the fairing. You will know it's mine if you see me.  I'm so busy with my baseball teams, I haven't had the bike out in a week.

We have been living through continuous drizzle in Lafayette. I have mostly been riding through it.

I've been terribly busy, distracted, etc....  But my wife is now riding the old Kaw 454LTD on her own, and we did about 120 miles today with my buddy and his R6.  That was about all the riding she could handle, being new and on a smallish bike — but it was nice enough weather for zipping around.

And MAN, these things are gutsy....

Looks like this week is going to be great.  A few showers here and there but overall a great start to the fall riding season.  Look forward to seeing some B12's on the road with mine.

Time to blow the dust off this thread and make my whereabouts known. Any Hoosiers still around on the board??? I'm here in the South Bend area. Hoping to get some tips on finding some decent roads. I'm tired of the three curves we have up here...lol. God this has to be the flattest state in the country.

I'm still here, just not in your neck of the woods.  I'm afraid I have no idea where there are good roads around you — but if you ever head down this way, I can point you to some pretty good ones basically between Attica, Lafayette, "greater" Crawfordsville (SR 47 towards Turkey Run St. Park isn't a challenging stretch, but it's enjoyable), and Indy (where an R6-riding buddy of mine has showed me some good ones).

For stuff semi-local to Lafayette, I've got a pretty good route mapped for about an hour of riding, with about half curvy enough to work you a bit....

Close... but Kansas has you beat if you're referring to straight boring roads..
Elevation change-wise (that's "flat" - right?) I think Florida wins though... <100' elevation change statewidel.
