Carb Sync?
« on: April 28, 2006, 10:25:53 PM »
Anyone in the PNW know how to do a Carb Sync, and want to have a Carb Sync party?  I would be willing to buy the tubing to build a home grown Sync tool.

On my Gixxer 1100 after my carb rebuild, I could not get the bike to run at all.  It just coughed and sputtered.  I didn't want to mess with trying to buy a tool so I took it to a dealer (Enumclaw SKY).  Dropped it off in the morning and it was done by afternoon, cost of $80.  It helps to talk to the mechanic and tell him what you've done (carb rebuild, new plugs, etc)  It ran great and had no other problems.  I think I would do it that way again as 1) You don't need to synch very often 2) A decent carb synch tool costs over $50 and you have to buy mercury refills each time ($20-30).

You shouldn't have to buy new mercury every time - unless you manage to loose it somehow.

Oh, I thought the mercury was a once use kind of deal.  Anyway, the Enumclaw SKY deal was good.  A lot of bike shops don't want to touch older bikes but they did.

I made an appointment at the Steelership.  He said under an hour and about 55 bucks.  What bugs me is it probably takes 1/2 hr to do if you have done it before . Not sure of the shop rate..probably $55-60.  My appointment isn't until the 18th, so maybe I will get the bug to try it.. I am sure I can figure it out.  I pretty much dont trust anyone to work on my stuff and learning is good.  Looking at the manuel/Carbs . not sure where the adjustment is.. I would probably see it if I pulled the tank.  I'd better find the homegrown tuner link again..

Any luck with the home tune? I tried doing mine and spent a ton of time with no results.  It would run great in the garage and I'd put it all back together and It would run like crap under load.  $55 is not a bad deal.  Again, talk to the mechanic personally and tell him what you've got.  A lot of times the service guy at the desk will jot down some scribbles and the mechanic will get the bike not really knowing what to do other than "it doesn't run right".   He may ask you some additional questions so things don't get messed with that don't need touching.

Havent even looked for the Homebuilt write up yet..  Probably will just let the dealer do it.  I am sure they will find all kinds of addintional things I need to do to it.

So, I got my bike back from the Stealership. .80 hrs  = $88.00 out the door.  I guess it was off a little bit. It seems to run a little smoother.  When I warm it up in the morning it seems smoother as well. But the Idle is still a little jumpy.  It does have new plugs.  The Mechanic said its a little lean 2500-3000 RPM. The Mechanic is fairly new, but anal (that's a good trait in a mechanic).  I think I will buy the Carbtune next time. I know its not that difficult.  I am sure a good mechanic can do it in about 15 minutes. The idle is set to about 1200. I think the consensus is 1200-1400.  I will bump it to 1400 and see how it is. :thanks:
