Title: PNW Bandit Tour 2008
Post by: Red01 on April 30, 2008, 02:02:56 PM
From another thread:
2 words: Lo, and Lo.
I need to make it past this sign:

I was talking with Bobcat on the phone yesterday and we were discussing a multi-day ride for later this summer - say mid-August.  This ride would take in Lolo Pass (see the sign above).  Also some of western Montana, Idaho and Washington and perhaps some of Oregon, too.  Specific routes and dates are not set in stone and open for discussion.

Any takers?

It may just be the two of us again. Paul said he might make it, and Bulldog might come, so fingers crossed.

This looks pretty kickass:

If you big boys don't mind a little B4 along for the ride, I'd be up for it. I could help arrange accommodations in Spokane as well.

There's a couple of nice routes, it seems from here to there.

And just west, in the Nez Perce are this couple of lovely side trips on 7 and 11.

and North of there, as a route in or out, the stuff around St Maries and Couer D'alene is real nice.

Count me in...I'll work it out. I'm assuming something like a 4+ day ride?

The Lolo is a blast! There is a lovely little road on route, north of Hwy 12 between Kendrick and Orfino that is a great warm up for the Lolo as well.

Let's pick a date so that I can block out the time...

Let's plan on leaving Saturday the 16th, and then returning sometime mid/late week. That work for you guys?

Hey Bobcat

It might work better if you started from your place on Friday, Aug. 15th. Then we have a better chance of allowing some of the Calgary guys to join us for the Lolo on Sat/Sun/Mon. How much time does Red01 have? You and Red could head through Republic and I could meet you in somewhere like Colville then we could make our way through Spokane and down to Lewiston.

Sat 16th through the Lolo, maybe back through Glacier/Going to the Sun road on Sunday, Libby Dam through to Tiger on Monday, back to Ellensburg on Tuesday?

Open to suggestions, but I'll block out the Fri-Tues, Aug 15-19th. How's everone else's schedule?

Those dates work for me. It's possible I'll have a final on Aug 15 (yes, I'm a 37 year old student now...) but being in Spokane, with everyone else coming from elsewhere, I think it'll work out alright. And it's only a possibility.

And the wife says yes

I can take off Fri 8/15 thru as late as the 24th easily...

I don't camp. Fleabag motels all the way.

But, if others want to camp, we can make arrangements to stop for the night where we can find campgrounds and crap motels.

So, just to confirm... our dates are Fri-Tues, Aug 15-19th, right?

Is the plan to meet at Bobcat's on Friday morning, or would Matt prefer somewhere else?

Then redezvous with others (Canadians/Spokaners) in Lewiston on Sat morning for the trip over Lolo?
Where should we meet up in Lewiston? How about the Old Spiral Hwy pullout on US 95, north of town?  What time?
Title: Re: PNW Bandit Tour 2008
Post by: andrewsw on July 25, 2008, 01:51:38 PM
That sounds good to me. Can someone provide a map to that pullout? I've not been down there at all.

Who else is coming from spokane or through spokane for this? I'd hate to ride down all alone.

The trip from spokane to lewiston is 2:15 on the slab, or longer off the slab (much preferred). If I get my act together I could be in lewiston between 9 and 10 depending on the fun level. But I could probably make it earlier if I had to. That said, the later time, 10ish is much better.... Hmm... or I could come down friday night, though that'll cost me brownie points with the wife. She'll be stuck with the three kids...

Have you guys done this before, and is there sort of a preferred route? It looks like there are a *lot* of nice roads around there.

one question, gas. My range is, ummm... limited. What's the gas scenario over the pass? It looks like it's 134 miles from Kooskia, ID to Lolo, MT. That's at the end of my range. Is there gas anywhere in between? It looks like there's gas just outside of Kooskia, maybe around Syringa, that puts it down to 122 miles, which might be better. Maybe I should bring a siphon tube .

And one more stupid question, at over 5000' I wonder if I should lean out the jetting a bit...would help with the gas mileage too, I suppose.

As a side thing, I wouldn't mind trying the short route from greer to fraser (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=greer&daddr=fraser&sll=46.382406,-116.167288&sspn=0.030256,0.064201&dirflg=h&doflg=ptm&ie=UTF8&ll=46.386313,-116.157503&spn=0.030254,0.064201&t=h&z=14) if it's paved. Can't tell from the photos.

August 15th-19th are the final dates.

Happy to have everybody meet up here Friday morning. We can head south and find a few good roads.

My address:

220 Meadow View Dr.
Ellensburg, WA 98926

Andrew, the map for the Spiral highway is here: http://maps.google.com/maps/mm?ie=UTF8&hl=en&ll=46.462162,-117.011604&spn=0.033464,0.075703&z=14 (http://maps.google.com/maps/mm?ie=UTF8&hl=en&ll=46.462162,-117.011604&spn=0.033464,0.075703&z=14)

When we went through Lewiston last time, it was for a quick pit stop, and then we were headed east. We didn't spend much time exploring in the area.

As far as gas goes, Google maps doesn't how any stations along 12. Paul will siphon for you if need be.

I'm in the process of figuring out what my real range is. According to the math and spec tank size, it should be 136 miles to reserve and then 14 to dead on the roadside. I never go over about 100 on a tank, so I don't know where it really lies. And, with the new tires coming on, I may lose a little mileage, but those miles will be longer... maybe that's a wash. Anyway, I'm going to run it down to reserve a couple of times and see what I get. Maybe it's not all that much of an issue, but I'll bring a hose anyway.

From the looks of the Greer-Fraser road on Google Earth, when zoomed in, it looks pretty brown... not the asphalt color of US 12 nearby.

As I recall, there was a gas station near the 77 mile sign, and that's ~90 miles out of Lewiston.  However, that was in 2004, so no tellin' if it's still in business today.  You shouldn't have any troubles though... you can always draft behind Matt and let his Happy Bus just suck you along and really save the gas!!  :bandit:

The Old Spiral Hwy pullout is on the plateau outside of Lewiston on the north.  There's a roadside tourist sign (on the suject of steamboats), an old roadhouse and just past it, there's a truck scale/rest stop/brake check area.  If you click on the sattelite version of Bobcat's link, you can see it... it's across from what looks like a MX track (I didn't know that was there). The old road goes down between the little and huge patches of green on the south side of US 95.

If possible, try to get down in the area Friday night.  (When we made the run in '04, we came down from Couer d'Alene on US 95.

If we can get cell #'s of everyone, perhaps we can meet all the travelers for dinner and/or beverages Friday night.  :beers:

What are you riding? That is pretty low mileage.

It's a '93 B4. It's piped and jetted and K&N filtered with no snorkel in the box. I get about 37mpg. I may be a little rich in the mid's, probably float level and not needle, but not by much.

You would think I'd get better mileage than that, but it's naked, and old, and jetted...

I asked about mileage in the latest MPG thread, but noone else responded with B4 mileage. :(

That's around the same neighborhood as a jetted B12 gets (I get 39).
What's the tank capacity on the B4?  (B6/12's carry 5.0-5.3 in 49 state versions).
Title: Re: PNW Bandit Tour 2008
Post by: andrewsw on July 27, 2008, 12:08:31 PM
4.2 gallons per spec, including the reserve, which is 1.6 quarts.

Other B4 owners have claimed mileage of about 40, with a similar setup. So, I figure I'm close. Known to be a touch rich in places, it makes sense.

As I said, I'll bring a tube, or maybe a 1 gallon spare gas can, just in case. I'm continuing to try and research the gas station issue, it only takes one gas stop a few miles in from either end and I'm good.

This site (http://fjr1300.info/events/rides/lolo.html)suggests that it's a crap shoot for fuel, but a nice route. I've heard good things about the St. Joe river ride too, which they incorporate into a loop back to moscow. It looks like, from the maps, it might be a better ride than Lolo, frankly.

The route back west from St. Regis to St. Maries puts you in prime position to run up ID 3 to ID 97 through Harrison along the east side Lake Coeur d'Alene to Wolf Lodge. A real sweet ride.

These guys like ID 14 down to Elk City
http://www.mctourer.com/rides/2007/WMR/lolopass.html

My harley riding friend has heard of this ride and wants to know if she can come along. I've been neutral so far, but need to give her some response. I'm thinking of telling her it's a bandit only ride, but don't want to presume. I think she's a fairly competent cornerer and rider in general, though she is pretty new to motorcycling. She does put down a fair number of miles though. Anyone have any input on this?

I like the idea of hitting the Saint Joe River Road on the way back in from MT. Two other roads I'd like to ride are Yaak River Rd and SR 37 NW of Kalispell.

re: your friend, I don't care if she comes. The only issue I've had with Harleys in the past has been pace; if she normally rides at traffic speeds (which includes RVs and campers) then she will be falling behind very frequently. We don't ride like jackasses, but I'm not content to sit behind a line of traffic for miles on end either.

If she's fine with that (or if she actually likes to corner her Harley) she's more than welcome to come.

I don't think we ride like jackasses either, but some of the folks we've passed might take issue with that. Like the guy in the pickup loaded with camping gear/toys leading a string of cars on SR 20 when we passed the whole string at once.  I don't think he was giving us the sign that we were #1.

I think it's safe to say we ride a "spirited" pace.  Something not too many HD riders do, though you do come across some once in a while.

Yea I am not sure I have seen a harley rider who wants to keep our pace for hours much less days. Unless its a bagger they usually have very small tanks too.

Thanks for the input on my friend. I'll put it to here, and take for a more "spirited" ride and see what she thinks. She claims that she is frustrated by slow riders...

I hate to break up the bandit thing though. I'll just stew on it for a while. She's riding to sturgiss, so maybe she'll have had a enough and keep me from being an ass about it...

I spoke to my Harley friend today. She's not sure if she can come, due to work constraints, but still wants to come. She says "I can take care of myself, and now that my regular pegs have been replaced with forward controls, I don't grind the pegs anymore." So we'll see, but she has no problem if the pace leaves her behind because she rides alone a lot and is perfectly happy just to be out.

Meanwhile, something to note about St Regis->St.Maries, this guy (http://micapeak.com/HMarc/pages/mc_page.html) claims that the stretch from Gold Summit to St Regis is graded dirt, but not a problem. Not sure how old that information is though.

My wife (Chandita) and I are working on coming along with Andrew on this ride over Lolo. We have to be back home on Sunday so we can work on Monday (boo!). Any ideas for accommodations on Sunday night?

Andrew, Chandita and I had a great little ride yesterday...was great weather here. I'll post pics of our "Mini Bandit" ride...which included a 400, 600 and 1200.

Did you mean Saturday night? My guess is we'll be somewhere in W. Montana on Saturday night, but exactly where we end up I couldn't tell you. I don't think we've ever had a set itinerary--we just stop in whatever town we come upon at the end of the day, find the cheapest motel we can, and crash for the night.

Based on what Matt said, you shouldn't find yourself too far away from home for a return to Spokane.  You can always drone down I-90 if you have to.

Looks like it's a Sunday night or early Monday ride back for me too. Depends on where we are and how many miles are down at the end of Sunday.

If we do St. Regis to St. Maries, then it's not much more to get back to Spokane, and I may take it, we'll see.

My Harley friend is stoked to come. I checked her chicken strips today, and I am shamed... her's are about 1/4 inch... Mine are still an inch or so... of course my side profile is a lot steeper than hers, but still...

HI Guys

Just back from 2 weeks vacation, with no internet... (it was nice)

Anyway, I'm IN...

The earliest I can leave is say 7:00 AM Friday morning (15th) and I need to be back in Cranbrook Monday night (18th), by 7:00 PM or so.

Anyway...Matt & Paul. Can we discuss where to meet on route on Friday, so about noon or so? I can make Colville, if you guys want to stay a little North, or at Gifford (the little ferry), or failing that, Spokane. Let me know what route you want to take and I'll work it out.

A "must do" part of the trip up the Lolo for me, is to take Hwy 3(?) to Kendrick, and then County Hwy P1 across & back to Hwy 12 to Orfino. There is fuel at Orfino, which may help Andrew out.

Return from Lolo doesn't matter to me. No matter where we end up Sunday night, I'll be able to get home Monday. I have some suggestions, but we can work them out once we are together.

I think that looks like a nice side trip. There is fuel at Kooskia, and I'm bringing a one gallon spare can (plastic), so I think the fuel problem is solved for me. I'll just fill that mother up at Kooskia, and if I don't need, then great.

I'm thinking the earlier we're on the road out of lewiston the better. This might push me into riding down Friday night.

Hey Paul,

I was thinking we might ride southern WA on Friday over to Lewiston. There are some roads down there that I've been wanting to ride for awhile, but never gotten around to doing. You wanna just meet in Lewiston? Also, can everyone PM me their cell #'s so we can touch base on Friday night? I have no idea where in Lewiston we'll be staying.

Yup...I can do that...but if you give me your route into Lewiston, there are a couple of roads south of Spokane that I want to ride, that will take us well West of Lewiston, so we may run into each other on the final leg.

I WILL be travelling with Cargo7...from somewhere in the middle of Washington, so we'll keep our eyes open for you. Same cell # for me, but I'll PM you again.

I'd like to ride 261 through Starbuck, then 127 north through Central Ferry, get on 26 east for awhile, and then head south onto Sommers road through Wilcox, and then down 194 onto the Wawawai Grade road. That turns into the Wawawai River Rd (193) which we can follow all the way into Lewiston.

Hey Matt

I've done the Hwy 127/12 section from Dusty to Dayton (DH 37) and Wawawai Grade road, both ways. I haven't done Almota/Mayview Rd over the lower Granite Dam, or Hwy 12 into Clarkston/Lewiston, so we may go that way.

Check your phone mid afternoon, as we will be in the same area, and we can keep an eye out for each other. Otherwise, first one to Lewiston look for a cheap hotel. We've stayed at a couple, but there is a bunch. See you Friday.

Hi Andrew

Cargo7 and I haven't firmed up yet, but he plans to make Keremeos or Osoyoos Thursday night, and then we will likely meet in Kettle Falls or close by for 11:00-12:00 (Pacific) Friday. Down past Spokane, possibly on Hwy 231 through Reardan and onto Sprague a few hours later.

If you want to travel West from Spokane and meet us, I will confirm some timing with Cargo7 and let you know. We could likely meet on Hwy 2 somewhere, if you have a coffee shop in mind, early afternoon.

I will PM you with our cell numbers, and send me back yours.

Everyone that's riding from Spokane is stuck until 5:00 pacific and I still don't know who's for sure coming on Friday night versus early saturday. I'll PM back my number and you can call me when you're north of town and we can see what time it is etc.

If you're in Kettle Falls 11-12:00 then it's very likely we all could meet you south of spokane as you come across. If you are through the Reardon/Sprague area earlier, I could bomb out just to meet you guys for a minute. Viking Burger in Sprague is a place to eat. Typical burgers and chicken strips.

If all else fails, we'll call you all when we hit Lewiston and you can guide us in to whatever fleabag motel you guys are at.

Cargo7 & I are meeting in Kettle Falls at 11:00-11:30 (PDT), then basically taking Hwy 231 (with some twisted edges) down to Sprague, then Hwy 23 to St. John, back roads to Dusty & Colfax, then Wlicox Rd/Almota Rd accross the lower Granite Dam and then finishing on Hwy 12 into Clarkston.

ETA is likely 2:30 in Sprague, 4:00 Colfax, 6:30-7:00 in Clarkston for supper.

New rear tire on, just need clean up the bike & gear a bit tonight, and off and running tommorrow.

looks like the spokane crowd won't be ready to roll til later on... which is good with the heat situation. Nick and Chantal (sp?) are thinking they'll be ready to roll sometime around 6:00. Yvonne (harley) is not coming due to work, which makes me feel bad since I'm her boss...

So watch those phone late in the evening and leave a light on for us.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I think it's up *EARLY* on Saturday to beat the heat up into the mountains.

Chantal and I will be making our best efforts to have kickstands up and pull out of the driveway at 6pm. From there we meet up with Andrew and it's off to Lewiston!

I'm sure Chantal and I will want dinner when we hit Lewiston, and sounds like Andrew will be in touch when we roll into town to coordinate with everyone.

We're looking forward to meeting everyone and having a great ride!

Andrew, Chantal and I rode from Spokane to Lewiston Friday night. Our first stop was in Colfax to have some liquids and check the bikes. Great sunset ride down, but pretty warm!

Here is Andrew on his B4. I call this one "Big Man on a Little Bike".

Friday night we stayed at the luxurious (?) El Rancho Motel in Lewiston. Features: Outdoor pool, mysterious bedspread stains, shower temperature randomizer, smelly room funk...AND we can't forget:

It may be that you guys made a wise move heading home early. The next 100 miles was even freaking HOTTER! We ended up about 30 miles from Lewiston where the high yesterday was 108. I got in last night at about 8:00.

I clocked a total of about 800 miles :thumb: in two and 1/4 days... though google maps calls it more like 750

Be sure to check out the route. (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=Lewiston,+ID&daddr=Kendrick,+ID+to:Orofino,+ID+to:lolo,+mt+to:Plains,+MT+to:Thompson+Falls,+MT+to:Murray,+ID+to:Linfor,+ID+to:St.+Maries,+ID+to:Santa,+ID+to:Bovill,+ID+to:Deary,+ID+to:Harvard,+ID+to:St.+Maries,+ID+to:Harrison,+ID+to:Eddyville,+ID+to:ID-97+and+interstate+90&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&sll=47.542237,-116.560822&sspn=0.239175,0.53009&ie=UTF8&ll=46.927759,-116.378174&spn=1.935731,4.240723&z=8) This just shows the part from Lewiston to ID-97 and I-90. If you can't figure out the rest... well...

It was a great ride with a decent mix of stuff for all riders. My ol' girl held up pretty well, so long as the roads weren't too straight. She sure spent a lot of time at 9-10k revs....

There's only one thing I'd change: the weather! Next year I suggest we go for June or September.... this August stuff is just insane! Oh, one more thing I'd change: the smell in Lewiston  :gagme:

I'll post up some pics and details of the roads shortly.

Here are some of us getting ready to roll early on Saturday in Lewiston. That's Chantal on the left making the rest of us look like grungy roadkill. Mike (MobileMike) and Matt (Bobcat) *never* stop picking on each other.

and for good reason... One of these things is *not* like the others! And do you notice that glow around Matt's head? We're still not sure what that is, but it's damned annoying.

Sweet sweet shade. That's Ron (Cargo7) on the left. He didn't believe in B4's until he actually saw one. I think he's still skeptical...

This is the last we saw of Ron. Hopefully he made it home. Or at least got started again so he wasn't stuck up there in that blast furnace.  Ron figured he had to go back at the halfway point up Lolo to avoid an 8-10 hour grind home on his last day.

The dip in the creek was awesome, and really helped make that next 5 minutes of riding a little more tolerable. Did we mention the heat yet? Stupid hot.

Matt continues to make incredible fashion statements.

D'oh! busted!

The legendary sign is missing at the bottom of the run. This one is about a mile below the summit, so after cooling down and watering ourselves a little at the summit, we ran back down for the obligatory shot. It was a strictly enforced 1 minute stop with no gear removal allowed. Must keep moving! Why does everyone seem to be shooting their cameras in random directions?

We ate dinner at the steak house, as Nick mentioned. Paul (pmackie) suggests that it will be 20-30 miles to get around Missoula and up onto MT-93 headed northwest. Then it will be a simple matter of finding a hotel. That took 85 miles straight into the sun. Still stupidly hot. The valley was beautiful, the road was not, being mostly straight and high speed on a long slow climb.

The hotel in Plains, MT was actually kind of nice. After a few beers and a/c enhanced sleep, Paul Mackie is looking pretty chipper.

I never actually got a good shot of Paul W. (Red01). I was all lined up for a perfect shot with a foot on the bike. He turned just as I was clicking the shutter. Go figure.

Two shots of us all suiting up after breakfast Sunday morning, still in Plains, MT. We got smart and actually had breakfast today *before* riding for three hours. Mike tried and failed to eat the most ridiculously huge pancake I've ever seen. Nick and I swapped bikes for the 25 miles into Thompson Falls. The power was fun to play with, but I missed the flickability, the beautiful exhaust note, and the SCREAMING WIND of the ol' naked B4.

Finally, here's Nick and Chantal suiting up to head home after our swim. Note the stylin' bandanas... Muffy, my wife, thinks that if Nick is dressed as Fred, why isn't Chantal dressed as Daphne, where's Velma and "how the hell did I end up married to Shaggy!?"

There it is. I don't think I've sweat so much in my entire life. I've also never known the sweat to be so utterly useless as a means to cool off. But despite that, it was a great trip. Thanks to all!

We caught rain in Ephrata--about an hour from home. No t-storms though. Believe it or not, Mike's tire gave up the ghost when he pulled into my driveway. I shut my bike off, and I heard Mike say "Holy shit. Look at that." Bubbles showing from a tiny puncture. He's thinking about plugging it and riding it home. No, I am not joking.

Thank you so much for a great ride!  There were so many amazing roads and beautiful scenery everywhere you looked.  I really appreciate all the tips and knowledge everyone shared.  It was awesome to be in the company of other Bandit enthusiasts.  Hey, it was a fun experience all the way around.  Well done guys!

Can't wait to see more pics and video once everyone recovers a bit and I hope the rest make it home safe too.

Again, I can't thank all of you enough for such a well executed tour of Idaho and Montana.  I'm looking forward to next year. :)

Well executed?  Not bad, I guess, for 90% of it being executed on the fly.  The only parts that were "pre-planned" were the Spiral Highway and Lolo Pass sections.

Oh! And we don't have to limit ourselves to once a year!

Mike (mobilemike) & I met up at Matt's (Bobcat) place just outside of Ellensburg on Thursday night.  Matt was determined to find the twistiest route possible through the central Washington desert to get us to Lewiston.  No small task given Destination Highways chose to ignore this slice of WA and call it The Donut Hole.  If you look at a map of this part of the state, you'll notice most roads run straight E/W or N/S unless running next to the Columbia River and even that doesn't offer too many curves.  Those that are offered are generally high speed sweepers.  Nonetheless, he did an admirable job of finding us all that was available.

Here's a shot near Desert Aire, WA.  Probably not the sort of scenery people from outside of WA think of when they think of Washington.

As Andrew noted, it was HOT!  So, shortly after lunch, we found ourselves a spot to take a swim in the Snake River at Central Ferry State Park... either 55 miles outside of Lewiston (if you're in a hurry) - or ~130 miles if you want to avoid wearing out the center of your tires - which was especially important to Mike since he didn't have much left in the middle to give up.

Mike says, "Have you ever texted Google?"

While our palatial 3-bed, 3-room suite at the fabulous El Ranchito didn't come with the funk smell enjoyed by Nick, Chandita & Andrew, it did have some of the hardest mattresses known to mankind.  I'm almost certain the floor was softer - which surprises me, since I'm guessing these are the original mattresses put into the place when it was built 30 or more years ago.

Here's my versions of the first morning the whole gang was together:

The more photographed sign at the west end was missing... hopefully it will be replaced.  Since it was gone, we just had to flip a U turn and pose in front of the eastern one after our break at the Lolo summit rest stop.

The better bike pic:

The bike doesn't come out as well in this one, but it gives you a hint of what's in store:

Part of my plan for arriving at the sign first was to get everyone as they pulled up to the sign.  The Bugsmasher Express, piloted by pmackie, was next to the scene:

Then came Chandita:

And last, but not least, the guy elected "Most Likely to Experience a High Speed Blowout," mobilemike:

The whole crew together:

Great pics guys...

Great ride, great roads, great people,...great time . I had a blast (and a blast furnace...104F is freaking HOT :ghostrider:)

Home at 6:00PM Mountain (5:00 Pacific). All great, no issues...(and no pics this trip).

Already thinking about the next one.

My stats...
4 days, 2500 kms(1560 miles), 24 litres of water ( for me, not the bike ).

and Nick...thank for the tip on the Flowery Trail Rd. It was excellent.

One thing I learned about trips in August--bring a swimsuit. Or just swim in form fitting lycra cycling shorts. Everyone loved the shorts except Chandita, who pretended not to know who I was (which hurt a lot).

Bikes lined up at the top of the Spiral Highway:

After everyone left the top, I stayed behind to take a group shot. I can tell that's Chandita leading the way on the bottom right, but my camera (POS) was on max zoom and I still couldn't get close enough to make out who's following.

At the Lolo summit. Mobilemike and Chandita have refused to park with the group.

Hey little buddy.

As mentioned, it was hotter than hell. Andrew rubbed ice into his head,

and pmackie used the break as an opportunity to take the shower he'd been putting off for 3 days.

On Sunday night, after a long drive in the dark looking for cheap hotels, we pulled into the worst hotel in the North America. Located in Priest River, it ranks as my #1 for the crappiest place to stay on a motorcycle trip. The bathroom is in what was once a coat closet, so when you shower your ass hangs out over the sink. Red and I enjoyed this little jewel on a trip a couple of years ago, and I was eager to introduce mobilemike and pmackie to its charms. However, defying all known physical laws, it had actually grown worse over the last two years. There were hoodlums hanging out in the parking lot who seemed a little too interested in the bikes, the proprietor looked like a reject from the Chicken Ranch in Nevada, and a creepy old guy kept popping out of one of the adjacent rooms and unscrewing light bulbs in the walkway. I felt a little unsafe, and Red smelled like fear after losing control of his bladder and urinating in his leathers. So, undaunted, we pressed on and found a nicer place down the road. I was disappointed there was no stains on the carpet, and that the price was too high, but I relented after somebody handed me a drink.

One nice thing about this place: the girls could sleep in the room with us.

This allowed Mike to practice his cornering form until 1 am. Personally, I think he leans the wrong way in the corners.

This also gave me the opportunity to clean Mike's bike, which hadn't seen a bath in 3 years.

Before:

After:

Mike laid around drinking rum while I was doing this, and made noises about feeling guilty that I was polishing his motorcycle.

Monday morning we set off, rode some great twisties, and then said goodbye to our token Canuck, pmackie, in Colville. We headed east on 20 to Republic, where Mike and I split to head south, and Red kept heading west. As we were heading into Grand Coulee, a horrific dust storm started up--something we learned the locals refer to as a "dirt wind." Lovely. We soldiered on, passing a group of Harleys (the last guy in line was wearing shorts and tube socks with no shoes), found some rain in Ephrata, and finally pulled into my garage around 7 or 8 o'clock last night.

The other bit of drama on the trip was the continual discussion regarding Mike's tires. He had decided that his Pilot Powers, which he had used for trackdays and which were almost to the wear bars, would be more than sufficient for a ~1500 mile trip. I told him he was crazy, and that he wouldn't even make it to the second day. To everyone's amazement, the tires kept  regenerating themselves over the next 3 days. They lasted all the way back to my house, and which point the rear sprang a leak. By now, it had become a point of honor for Mike to see if he could make it home. He borrowed my pump, and set off this morning for home. I last heard from him in Goldendale, when he called to say he had only lost 3 psi over the last 150 miles. I think Mike is a little bit insane. Here's how they looked when he left this morning:

A great trip, albeit a little warm. Great to meet everyone, and to have some attendance at one of these get togethers.

Hey Matt, did Mike get his SD card out of your laptop this time?  :trustme:

After we parted in Republic, I turned south on a road about midway between Wauconda and Tonasket.  Bobcat may remember the spot as one where he almost ran over me when we were heading eastbound a couple of years ago when I did a quick-stop for a visor change on our way to Republic.  Anyway, the map shows it as a paved road southeast to Aeneas, where it then splits, with the SE fork turning to gravel and coming out on SR 21 and the SW fork remaining paved and coming out on SR155 near Disaute.  Well, I don't know if the SE fork ever turned to gravel, but it was still paved when I turned off.  The map was lying about the SW fork though.  It was immediately gravel.  Since my map was showing a campground near a lake not too far down, so I was hoping the road would become paved again.  I also didn't want to backtrack back the way I came.  Not just because it would have been  ~40 mile wasted detour, but there was also a county sheriff sitting at one of the little lakes and he seemed a little startled when I went by . . . and I was pretty sure he'd be awake and anticipating my return.  I think that was the longest 22 miles I've ever rode my B12!  I managed to meet 4 pickups on that road.  Only one was in a straight section (he was very courteous and slowed way down and moved to his extreme right side to minimize dust and maximize safe passing), the others were mid-corner and well above the posted 35 MPH speed limit (which I rarely was willing to meet).  Good thing I was hugging the RH side in the corners, because those three trucks were taking their half out of the middle - or worse.  The first one had to take evasive maneuvers to keep from making me a hood ornament!

Overjoyed once I made it to blacktop, I could see storms to the west, seemingly right in my path.  I stopped in Twisp to say "hi" to some friends for ~20 minutes, then topped off the tank for the Cascade crossing.  Thunder & lightning was getting very close, but it was looking like it was going to stay on my left and things were looking clearer towards Winthrop and the passes.  Just as I hung a left to leave Winthrop though, I started to get rain.  The amount was rapidly increasing from a couple of drops to outright downpour in just a block or so, so I pulled into the picnic area, under a big tree that had an equally large dry area underneath so I could don my rain gear and put the rain fly over my luggage.  While I was doing this, some lady pulls up in her RAV4 and scolds me for being under a tree in a lightning storm.  While this is generally not a good idea, the tree was offering me shelter, and it wasn't the tallest thing around, considering the huge bluff on the other side of the street.  I also figured it was safer under the tree than riding out across the open valley floor just as you leave town. By the time I got everything ready to go, the rain had stopped, but with the roads still being very wet and figuring there'd be plenty of cars & trucks to pass, leaving everything protected would be the smart thing to do, so off I went.

Between Winthrop and the Liberty Bell curve (~20 miles), I only passed two pickups, one hauling a horse trailer.  Didn't see another vehicle in front of me until a mile or so out of Marblemount.  Only met a dozen or so vehicles coming from the west side the whole way - over half of them were fellow motorcyclists.

My total mileage for the trip: 1714 miles

My early (~1850 mile) review for the Pilot Road 2's:
Dry pavement:  :thumb:
Wet pavement:  :thumb:
Gravel roads interspersed with sandy sections (all dry):  :annoy:

Was watching the Weather Channel a little last night since my oldest daughter lives in the area being hit by tropical storm Fay and noticed the weather over most of the roads we just ran was getting hit pretty hard by rain.  Pretty much in a backwards shaped C from Lewiston thru Missoula and back to Cour d'Alene.  I'm glad we had to put up with the heat instead of rain!

Hey guys,

A couple of you were asking about the turn signals I have on my bike. Here they are...I think I actually found them at a local dealer for cheaper. But they are still much cheaper than suzuki OEM replacements!

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/4/70/7303/ITEM/Bikemaster-Universal-Flush-Mount-Marker-Light-Kit.aspx (http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/4/70/7303/ITEM/Bikemaster-Universal-Flush-Mount-Marker-Light-Kit.aspx)

I didn't have to modify anything on the bike (other than splicing the wires to the new signal). If memory serves, these signals have a metal backplate that I drilled a hole in to install. I'm pretty mechanically declined, so if I can do it, anybody can!  :duh:

Next project I have to tackle is my piss-poor headlights. They must be filled with black dust, and the blocker for the low beam has slipped, making the low beam completely useless. That will probably be a winter project so I can re-order whatever I break in the process.   :yikes:

And yeah Mike, where is that video???   :burnout: :banana2:

This is posted in another thread, but thought I would follow up here to make sure more of you "hosers" would see it...

Chantal and I are headed to Winthrop on July 16-17-18 if anybody would like to join the fun. We could have some great fun on Hwy 20!
