Title: PNW trip this summer? (2013 version)
Post by: Red01 on June 25, 2013, 01:08:04 PM
Looking at getting together with Bandit Alley friends for a PNW ride.
Tradition has it in August for 4-5 days.  Thinking about western OR this time, but open to ideas if interested parties have any.  Actual dates still open for discussion, too.  Riding a Bandit for this event is optional (obviously, since I don't have one anymore).

In!

Best timing for me would be the first week of August...

Aug 8-12 time frame might work out best for me...I have family in from Hawaii earlier, and possible track day later. Let me know, and I'll see what I can work out. I was bummed to miss last year...

The John Day area of Oregon is always great, we did Hwy 206 into Condon and Fossil to Antelope on this years Cali trip. I have done a bit of NW Oregon, some nice stuff there as well, and a little bit South and West of Eugene, but there is a bunch I have not done, so that all sounds good.

I'll do my best to work it into the schedule. The Sprint got new Racetech suspension this year, so a little tighter now.

Sure we couldn't stretch SW OR into NW CA?  I've been itching to ride CA 36 ever since I learned of it.
It's sign tops the 77 mile warning on US 12 over Lolo Pass.

Whoo Hoooo. I am alive and busier than a 2 peckered billy goat.
I have two cousins here from the 5th to the 15th. It would be nice to go 15 to 19 or somewhere near there.
I never have though there was much in western Oregon and its too close to metropolis for our usual pace. I may be wrong. Farther south might be better. That hyw Paul is mentioning sounds great. I am up for anything.

The 14th through the 20th is about the only stretch in August that doesn't work for me. What about the week of the 26th-30th?

I'm down for Hwy 36. But you thought NE Oregon was hot in August. Not sure I'm down for 100+ in Red Bluff.  :yikes:
And I don't care if folks from MS want to come...

I don't think it's much different than E OR in August... at least not according to this:

http://weatherspark.com/averages/31437/Red-Bluff-California-United-States

BTW - I've invited a co-worker to come along as long as he promises to ride his C14 and not his V-Rod.

My sister & her husband just moved from the Bay Area to a ranchette just north of Chico... its about 30-35 miles SE of Red Bluff.  I could probably talk her into letting us swim in the pool and if the crowd's not too big, crash for a night.
Might be hard telling her VTX riding husband he can't keep up with us though.  :stickpoke:

Actually, after suggesting the 8-12th, that won't work for me now either. Later is better for me too. Anytime after Aug 20th is best for me.

As for North Cal, I have been there most years in the past 6 or so years. Some absolutely great roads. On this years trip we did 4 nights in Chico and rode the stuff East and South. Hwy 36 is great as well, but some even better stuff just a little North.

The only challenge is that you need a full day+, each way, to get from Ellensburg to anywhere nice, so it can make the trip a little long. Especially, if you want to do some fun roads on the way down. How much time has everyone got? Our trips to North Cal have usually been 9 days riding (8 nights). Day 2 this year went from Wenatchee to LaPine, Oregon. Nice day, but still 700+ kms, and then another 650 kms to Chico the next day.

So...two things to get organized:
1. How many days has everyone got?
2. What date to leave and return?

Then we can plan a route.

I guess anywhere we go in august is going to be hotter than hell.  :banghead:

My house would be a good short stop for the northern people.

How about this for dates: Leave on the Sunday, Aug 25th, return on Friday, Aug 30th. We leave an extra day or so in case it takes us extra time. Work for everybody?

Sheesh...!! So I'm a year out of date...are all the phone numbers I have for you toast as well? If so, you'd better PM the new ones to me.

So...is it a full 6 day trip? Hey Mike, can you handle the full week off? Do you want me to work out some potential route options?

Hey Mike

Do you have dates/length that would work better for you? Maybe include one of the weekends? I'm flexible...

Where are you located? Somewhere in Northern Oregon, IIRC. I will try to plan some route options starting at your location.

No special dates just maybe one day shorter. If that works. I guess I could return a day before you guys if I need to. OR your last day could be from my house to yours for you guys. That might be the best way.

Can I say it's an age thing? Or maybe now that I'm retired, maybe it's a focus thing...

Anyway, looks like we meet Sunday night in Battle Ground?...looks like two good days for me, if I want to have fun roads, or one long pull on the straight, fast ones. And then back to Mike's on Thursday night. Does that work to everyone's expectations?

We won't make California and back in the four days, except maybe a dip into the Northern Part, but there are some great roads through Oregon heading south...some that I haven't done, others I have. We can fit in some Washington roads before we part company on Friday, on the way home.

There's always a possibility Chantal and I will join you guys; I'll try to keep an eye on the boards!

It's a possibility there will be more Kawasakis than Suzukis on this ride.

Hey guys

My schedule is looking a little cramped...I will need to be back in Cranbrook earlier than I committed.

Can we look at moving this trip up a day, and meeting at MobileMike's on Saturday night, with a plan to be back near his place on Wednesday night?

Let me know if that will work for the rest of you. You can still consider some nice roads in Washington on Thurs/Friday?

I've mapped out a couple of days, and some options, but I wanted to make sure the day earlier thing wasn't going to be a problem. At this point, Longview to Tillamook, then inland down part of the Umpqua Valley. Hope to catch the North of California, from Happy Camp to Yreka, and then up the East side of I-5, then maybe toward Mt Hood.

Just some ideas. I am targeting approx. 400 mile days, on the road at 8:00 off for supper. How's that sounding? Hey MobilMike...with the date change work for you? So I see Bobcat, Mike, Paul & friend, and then me, so 5 of us? Anyone else coming?

OK. I'll get a potential route completed in the next couple of days. I will be using Microsoft Streets and Trips, which also has the option of saving the file as a Garmin Compatible *.gpx file. If anyone wants either the MS *.est or *.gpx files, send me a PM with your email address and I'll forward them to you.

Should be a fun trip!! A sixth person would be nice to even out the hotel rooms, I'll be pushing a couple of my buddies to see if anyone can come, but it does NOT look likely.

Not with Paul felling trees with that diesel powered chain saw he has. He gets his own room and we split some of it with him.

Going to crater lake? Never been there.

Good news (for me at least, I not sure who's sharing with Paul!) I have a buddy coming along, so there will be six of us.

As far as Crater Lake, sure, we could go there. The road up and around is nice, going North out is not so good, but I'll Map it out as an option, and we can decide later. I've been there at least 4/5 times, but it is pretty cool really.

Good question. I assumed that there must be a hotel close by your place, so I did the route up starting in Battle Ground. It looks like there is a Best Western in town, and I will try and book there. If not, Vancouver, Washington is only a short hop, and we can still meet you in Battleground.

Everyone one OK with meeting at the Best Western in Battleground, even if we don't stay there? I would suggest meeting at 7:45 Pacific, with a depart expectation of 8:00 AM. So be fully fuelled and ready to go at the Best Western at 7:45 for pictures!!

Everyone can relax, the threat of having to share a room with me must've made my co-worker decide to back out, so it looks like we're back down to five.  Thanks for scaring him off guys.  :stickpoke:

Seriously, I think it was pressure from his girlfriend (who is also one of my co-workers).  I heard rumors she was saying something along the lines of, "So you'd rather take a week off and spend it with Paul instead of me?!"

I'd suggest we all plan on meeting up there Sat. night. Red, I'll work out the meetup time with you to ride down on Saturday. Not sure I'll be able to leave in the morning, so departure time to head down to Battleground is still TBD for me. Maybe noon? Pmack, what route are you guys taking down?

Hi Bobcat

At this point, planning to overnight in Republic on Friday night, and then down the Grand Coulee, then likely I-90 to Ellensburg, Yakima, Hwy 12 to Randle, CR25 & 90 past St Helen's Hwy 503 to Battleground. If we make it past Republic, then we might go to Wenatchee and take Hwy 97 to Ellensburg, and avoid the I-90 thing. This is preferred, but it is about an hour longer, so depends where we overnight.

If you and Red are taking Hwy 20, or 2, then coming down 97 we could meet up in Ellensburg. I'll text you an ETA once we're underway on Sat morning. Likely somewhere between 12:30-2:30 PM. We could have lunch and wait for you...it you get going!!

Thanks especially to you Paul Mackie for the guidance and route planning. I would not have been nearly as fun with out that. You are truly the nicest guy even though I ribbed you the whole trip.
