Carbon Fiber Hats
« on: July 29, 2008, 05:29:08 PM »
Anyone have any experience with any of the Carbon Fiber helmets?
Specifically the HJC AC-12 series.
My KBC VR-1 is about due for replacement and I've been eyeing one of these for a while now.

I have the FS-10 from HJC, with the slide down sun shade.  Its a nice helmet, but its the first full face I've ever ridden, so I don't have much to compare it with.
Its not heavy on my head, and its not real noisy when I ride.  I especially like the sun shade feature.

I just noticed, however, that there is a "ac-12 Carbon" version that for some reason I had overlooked before.  Hmmm . . . that does look interesting.

I've looked at those.  My Scorpion will probably need to be replaced next year.  The one from JR looks cool, too.

Well, I'm bummed.  Seems HJC has discontinued the Carbon Elbowz version of the AC-12.  I had placed an order for one the other day and found out it is no longer available.  :annoy:

Well ain't that just a kick in the pants?  I fingered around with the carbon Elbowz at Mid-Ohio and saw them again at Road A at one of the vendors (Comp Acc I think).  They are way ligher than the standard AC-12, but didn't fit my punkin right.  Remember, though, that it may be a noisier helmet, too.  Good luck with the search, but I'm sure there are still some in the pipeline somewhere.

I ended up giving up on the Carbon Elbowz and went with a left-over KBC VR-2 Mladin Daytona replica for $100.
It's a nice looking lid and it's comfortable.  Has the easiest visor changing mechanism I've seen to date!  The vents don't do much, but since it doesn't get very hot around here, that's not a big deal... and it wasn't unbearably hot in the 105*F weather encountered on the PNW Bandit Tour, thanks in part (I believe) to the color scheme having quite a bit of white in it - which was a factor in my decision to go with it.

Maybe a carbon fiber lid will be the replacement for this one some time down the road.

nice looking :)  I like the color scheme and the price.   I was looking into a carbon fiber helmet myself and the ac-12 carbon was one.  I ended up going with the gmax , i read a good review of it on webBikeWorld and it was only 107 shipped.  Just another option for someone in the future that wants a decent cheap helmet.  ... oh and it has a strip of red LED's at the back of the helmet.

I looked at that one, and the Sparx line as well.  I couldn't find a local dealer that carried the G-Max to get an idea of how it fit me - and I wasn't that fond of the LED light on the back.  The Sparx fit my head shape well, but the breath deflector rubbed on the tip of my nose.  While it could be trimmed or maybe even removed, the shop didn't have the color scheme I wanted in my size.  Since my previous lid was a KBC VR-1 and it has served me well, I went ahead with KBC again.

If anyone is interested in the VR-2 Mladin replica, they're still available on fleabay.  The outfit I got it from was Extreme Supply with a userid of helmetdepot.  They were listing it for 124.99 and took my offer of $100, so they might even take a lower one than that.

I like that, Paul.  It's such a deal... I may have to pick one up.  Although, one of my riding buds has that model in a different scheme and says he wouldn't get another one.  He's had some problems with the vents just "falling off".  He did say their customer service was great fixing it for him.
