It is all fun and games until your Tibia punches a hole in your boot and gets ground off on the highway:

Is there a true story behind that comment?  If so, please share!

There certainly is. I highsided my '96 1200 and it landed on me when I hit the road. It broke my leg badly enough to push the bones out the front of my leg, through the boot and onto the road.

This is how much bone I lost:

No boot, no foot. I am glad I was in the right gear.

OMG!  Do I understand that you didn't lose your foot, though?  That crash might just keep me off bikes for good!

Did that grow back together or did they have to bone graft?

Yeah, it all stayed attached thanks to my boot but they did end up taking a piece of my hip to fill the void.
I didn't see it as a reason to stop riding but rather to keep wearing good gear.
