Title: Gel Seat Pads
Post by: banditnek on June 09, 2005, 01:15:24 AM
Has anybody tried a Gel seat pad for comfort. I'm talking about the kind of pad that seats on top of your seat and costs about $80. I'm wondering if they help with monkey butt.  :thanks:

I don't have one and I've heard that Suzuki has disc the factory version.
Anyone else that I've heard comment on these, is that if you leave 'em in the sun they heat up something fierce. When you remount, they fry your but and other things close by.

No, no, the little whoopi cushins not the gel seats. I'm wondering the same thing. I've been doing some longer rides and having some butt troubles my self. I'm also thinking about a sheepskin.

I'm glad you brought that up, Silverstreak. I've had others mention sheepskins for butts. Apparently they DO work. What seems to be a secret, is,
where you get ones of suitable sizing,
what you do with 'em if you go in to a roadhouse for lunch,
how long they take to dry when you're inevitibly caught in the rain & Smell
what keeps 'em from moving about/getting out of place, etc.

If one is to tour... this Matters.

Just for curious-osity. Which is your faith? You don't have to answer this. I dated two minister's daughters in the old days. Just chance, I guess. Very smart girls, too.

Mike in Peterboro, ON = relatively next door, for this chat site.

I'm thinkin about 12 to 14" squarish with a rubber anti-slip back glued on. Sew or epoxy a loop on the front which would slip down between the seat and the tank. When it rains you just pop it off, roll it up and stuff it in the saddle bag. If you've got no saddle bag then place it on your chest and zip your rain gear up. I just need the skin but I'm having trouble finding one this side of the border.

Faith is believing in things not seen or completely understood, like counter steer. I'm a Christian, just a simple Jesus man (non-denom) working with the very poor on the streets of Toronto. I run a wood working shop so they can come in and experience making something beautiful. I believe as the Good Book says that we are created in the image of God and if we are to discover that then we have to do creative things. Most peoples experience of work is more like prostition – just do it for the money. At the shop we try to turn that concept around. People on or near the street have been totally rejected at Sanctuary we try to give them a place to belong.

A while back Motorcycle Consumer News did a shootout of several aftermarket choices in the 'place it on top of your seat for more comfort' arena. The air bladders (Airhawk, IIRC) won, but sheepskin was also rated very well - and a LOT cheaper. If anyone is interested in more details, I can dig thru my archives and see if I can find the article.

I've read a lot of good things about the Airhawk on the internet so I bought one a couple of years ago to use with my gel seat. For me, it added very little in the way of comfort. I constantly tried to experiment with air pressure (Airhawk recommends just enough to suspend you), but couldn't find a setting that worked. I ended up returning mine, but a lot of other people seemed to like them.

I had one for years on my Vulcan - a godsend on long road trips!  I haven't seen the need for one yet on the Bandit but that may be because I lose feeling in my hands after only 30 minutes so the rides are fairly short!!

According to the back issue index on the MCN site, (http://www.mcnews.com/mcn/article_index.asp) it's in the May 2004 issue, but the oldest one I can find is the June 2004 issue... sorry.

No problem. If it turns up, I'll post here. I can't believe I threw it away - I don't usually throw enthusiast magazines away (especially Motorcycle Consumer News)... you never know when you might want to refer back to something in one. It's probably still around somewhere - it's just a matter of finding where I put that one (and the older issues).

(Yes, I have boxes full of old 4x4 & motorcycle magazines.)

I came across this article that seemed to cover most of the options http://www.motorcyclecruiser.com/accessoriesandgear/buttpads/

I always thought the wooden beads were a joke, but this guy seemed impressed!

I still have 10 years of Hot Rod magazines (starting in 1980) that I think about getting rid of every time I have to move the boxes.  My wife threatened on many ocassions to do it but I somehow managed to convince her otherwise.

I just stumbled upon this old thread and thought I would revive it in order to share a bit of experience.

It seems several folks would like to add sheepskin, but the cost can be a little prohibitive.

Try using an equestrian saddle pad. I got mine at State Line tack for $20. It's more of a faux-sheepskin. It has good airflow and, since it's synthetic, rain won't ruin it.

My recent run from Dallas to Manitoulin Island, Canada and back simply would have been dreadful without this seat pad. Best $20 I've spent.[/img]

I made a gel seat pad for my ride to AR. It worked very well and it cost about $20. Easy to make, Go to your local sport store or wal-mart, buy two bicycle gel pads. The kind that slip over the seat. You can get extra thick about one inch or regular about 1/2 inch thick. OK, take the stitching out of everything. You should have four pieces, the top which is like wet suit materal, the gel, the bottom which is black non-skid rubber and the black lace about 1/2in wide that holds the top and bottom together. Now that it is all apart take the two bottom pieces put on your seat to figure out the shape you want it. Mine turned out kinda like the shape of a heart. By now you`ll see, if you cut one side of each bottom( about a 1/4 of the material) sew the two straight pieces together. Then cut the gel and the top pieces to match the bottom. Sew it all together. I used the 1/2 wide lace from the side to join the two top pieces together. It took about 2 hours. I had a lady at work sew it. I can`t sew. I hope this helps. I`m much better at doing something then I am at explaining how to.

I find the stock 2Gen Bandit saddle very good for my butt. I also have a sheepskin for long rides and I find it helps a little. The sheepskin seems to reduce the abraision that starts to occur on the inside of my thighs on long rides. (IE: multi day tours).

I take the sheepskin off and put it in the saddle bags when it is wet.

I got the sheepskin from my wife. We had it for all 5 kids, but they are all basically grown now. (youngest is now 12/almost 13 - oldest 25). She says her friends in the Le Leche League used to mail order them in. Try a baby supply site?

Some options for sheepskins (even a NZ site!)

http://www.kanuksheepskinproducts.com/rugs.html
http://www.bowron.co.nz/
http://www.sheepishdreams.com/

Typically, you are looking for a baby blanket/change pad size. Mine fits over the whole seat. I basically pop the seat loose, tuck in the corners of the sheepskin and push the seat back in place. Stays there just fine.

Yes! Please do!  :thanks:

I'm running the Suzuki gel seat, but this turned out to be only a small improvement over the stock seat. Am also going crazy looking for a seat that's a BIG impovement, but have found nothing that's affordable, and summer (AKA "monkey-butt" weather) is starting to set in here in Tampa. :crybaby:

I did find an outfit that maps your pressure points on a seat. They then install a $pecially contoured cu$hion on your seat pan, including "wing$", that widen the seat as well. Don't a$k the price, tho.

Gyro - It still hasn't turned up... I'm thinking it might have been in an issue I read from someone @ work that subscribed before I did. If I do have it, it's in a black hole somewhere - hanging out with all those missing socks.
