Title: K&N air filter for B12S

Anyone try a K&N on thier B12? If so any probs with one? Get better HP like in vehicles?

There is no improvement, and mostly the likelyhood of poor running with it.

K&N filter is not good for a 2nd Gen 1200.

The top 3 jet kit manufacturers for the 2nd Gen recommend sticking with the stock air filter.

Post by: notagix on September 10, 2006, 01:20:34 PM: I have the Hindle slip on and K&N filter in 2004 1200, with the snorkel removed, I have 3 shims on the needles and 112.5 mains,it's just fine. At 110 kp/h cruise I have 14.7 AFR and WOT it's kinda rich at 11.5 AFR.

They do have an airbox mod that opens up the flow with the stock filter, but you gotta run a jet kit-otherwise you're bike will run rough if it even runs at all.

You can get away with an aftermarket exhaust and stock jetting, but it's gonna run lean. You really need some basic jetting mods with an exhaust and stock airbox.

The people listed above with a K&N filter have carb mods. Those who don't are just plain stupid.

So unlike a fuel-injected automobile which can adjust... unless you have modded your carbs to at least a stage 2 jet kit... and unless you have upped the fuel intake by said upgrade... you will lose performance by going to a K&N filter.

Simply adding more air to an already lean stock Bandit engine will REDUCE horsepower.

Bottom line: With my stock air filter I will blow away any Bandit 1200 that has a K&N filter and no carb modifications.

Post by: CWO4GUNNER on December 19, 2006, 02:17:40 AM: Like Paul pointed out the jet kit manufacturers who have spent countless hours dyno testing their kits in countless configurations to develop a kits that would reach optimal street performance with modified exhaust and air boxes using gasoline do not recommend K&N filters because they provide too much air and negatively affect performance unless you are using track race fuel. But if you are not concerned with actual performance and more with pointing out those cool looking K&N filters to anyone that doesn’t know better then they are most likely right up your alley.

Awww.... you weren't inept.

Just a lot of people think that air alone equals horsepower... and if they don't read your sig... they might not know you have a jet kit. :wink:

Put a K&N air filter in a Yamaha 850 decades ago, and put one in a Chevy G20 van about 10 years ago and never had a problem with them, but think there are better ways to increase mileage (didn't really see any difference in mileage with the K&N).

How-smebber, I stuck a toilet-paper OIL filter (using 2/3 of a roll of toilet paper as the filtering element) from J.C. Whitney into a '70 Renault R-16 and promptly got 1/3 better gas mileage long-term (went from 26 mpg to 35 mpg). VW's run in the Baja Race in Mexico used the same filter because of the alkali dust that got into and killed engines after only 100 miles. VW dune buggies so equipped never suffered an engine failure in the Baja. No, I don't know where you can get one of these filters now, and I'm holding onto the one I have!!
