Author Topic: Front/rear stands vs. motorcycle jack (Read 5266 times)

I would like to start being able to remove/mount the front/wheel tires so when I buy new tires all I have to do is take in the rims to the local shop to have them mount them on the rims only. ($10/rim vs. about $100 for the whole job). I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on the best set-up for this kind of job? Should I used front/rear stands or get a motorcycle jack? Or is some other arrangement better? Thanks for any help.

2 pcs 2x6's nailed together about 14" long, with bike on hard stand and a bit of stoutness on your part or a big bud, lean bike to one side and slide 2x6's under Hardstand. One side at a time. Back wheel hi enough to change out with no prob, lift up front, use a stand or 1 gal paint can with 1x wood under header and your there. Good and solid, used with no prob for many tire r&r's. Just my rig!

Cant beat a good block of wood, thats all I use too. And I dont have a centre stand as I took it off, just use my Paddock stand and wood!

I use the centerstand to pull the rear wheel, then jack the front of the bike up with a floor jack, pull the front, stick the axle back in the forks and slip a jackstand under the axle.

Spend the cash and buy Pit Bull front and rear stands. I have both, they are fantastic. The front comes as a two piece unit able to either lift from the forks or the steering head (for fork removal). The rear converts to work with or without swingarm spools.

They will last a lifetime and work on any bike. They are not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

Thanks for all the great input! I'm still thinking about what I'll do, but I may look at the Pit Bull stands.

One more question on this topic... Would it work to keep the bike on the centerstand to pull the rear wheel and have just a front stand on the bike at the same time in order to pull the front? Or will there be a difference in height between the centerstand and the front stand where the bike would be unstable? Thanks for any help.

No, its fine or I was lucky. That was the first way I did a Tyre change. I used a speed clamp and the bottom of my shed, near the door to get the clamp under. It works but your better with a good stand!
