It's nearly time to replace the front, again. The sportec M1 has been great, so far I've got around 11,000km on it with maybe 1-2000 left.
I've got a Z4 on the rear thats only 3-4000km old and looks hardly worn.
Has anyone heard anything, good, bad or indifferent about the Pilot Road, and is it a bad idea to mix brands.
I would like to find a tyre combo where I get 10,000 out of the rear and 20,000 out of the front - but I don't want a hard, nasty in the wet, no grip piece of crap tyre. Is my expectation too much or is it possible?

Mileage (or kilometerage) depends wildly on riding style & conditions. I'm on my 2nd Pilot Road rear and the front is doing good. I got 10,000 miles out of the rear and the front's got ~14,000 on it. From posts I've rear here and elsewhere, I seem to get a lot more miles than most B12 riders. I got 10K out of the OEM Michelin Macadam 90X's and a little over that with the Bridgestone BT010/020 combo that followed the OEM tires.
Personally, I would be reluctant to mix brands, but it's probably OK as long as they have similar profile styles.
I've liked the PR's well enough to buy the second rear and they seem to work great for the conditions I ask them to perform in. I have only heard one person complain about their wet weather performance, everyone else that has a comment on their wet performance has thought highly of them.

I've never been a fan of mixing 'brands' or tread patterns on any vehicle, I always thought that was just one of my old mans prejudices that he drilled in to me from the first car I bought. Sort of like his prejudice against anything but British Bikes (he was a pom after all)
I'm still not sure about which tyre to fit. I'm thinking that maybe I should go with another M1 on the front this time, then replace front and rear as a pair next time round.
One thing I do know for sure is that I won't be going back to the Macadams.

Hey Bloke I have mixed and matched this pair on the b6
Shinko 009 on the rear, the last one lasted 23500ks and grips wet and dry And the MEZ4 on the front. only because shinko dont make 110 width front. However they do make a 120 to fit the b12. The weak link on my combo is the front as far as grip goes.

When I called the shop looking for the M1 they said the price on the Metzler tires has dropped a lot this year. I ended up paying $150 CDN for the front.

Sense we are on tires here. I was wondering about this. I going to replace my front tire on my bandit, it was a X90 Macadam, I just pick up a Pilot Road to replace it. My question is, My back tire stills has a lot of meat on it so instead of replacing both, I'm just going to replace the front only... Will i have any handling problems?

had a bt56 on the front with 3/4 tread and a new bt020 on the rear thanks to a nail. this combo worked pretty good for about 6000 miles. then went to bt020s at both ends. this feels alot better to me. got about 3500 on this set and both look nearly new. really like the feel of this tire especially in the rain. 55-60 mph is no problem in light to moderate rain. does't help in hail much though. :motorsmile:

A pom is local lingo for Englishman - it was actually P.O.H.M (Prisoner of His Majesty). They also get called To and Froms, and 2 bob imports.

My question is, My back tire stills has a lot of meat on it so instead of replacing both, I'm just going to replace the front only... Will i have any handling problems?

The Pilot Road is essentially the Macadam 90/100X replacement. All three are Sport-Touring tires and have similar profiles. There should be no issues with running a PR front and a Mac 9 (or 100) rear.

In my case it's not a case of the front wearing before the rear, it's more a case of bad timing. I'm on my third rear (in 20,000km's) and only my second front - the rear only went on 3000km ago where as the front has around 11000km. I've never been able to successfully time it to do both front and rear together, which makes swapping brands/profiles/tread patterns difficult.

lost a rear to a nail and got out of sync. 2nd rear wasn't worn out when the front was but swapped out both just to get a matched set. felt alot better to me that way

I've been quite happy with the Pilot Road's as sport touring tires.

So far I've gotten 8-11,000 kms out of my rears and 15-18,000 kms out of my fronts. So I need 3 rears for 2 fronts. I went through the stock Brigestone BT56 and changed to BT020's in part because I needed a new year and the front was great, so I chose the same manufacturer and size, with a similar tread pattern.
My front and rear BT020's should both be ready for replacement next time around, and I'm considering a change to the Avon ST's.

I just got a set of pilot roads for the B4. I'm hoping to get them put on today if I can. I'll let you guys know how I like them.
