Author Topic: cheap Handle bar risers for sale??????????? (Read 6984 times)

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to get a count of people who may be interested in Handlebar risers for their bandits or any other bikes with 7/8 handlebars. I bought a used set off of ebay, and I still had to pay way to much for them. They are the ones that go up and back. this is the only actual manuf. I could find that makes them, besides selling on ebay:

The actual ones I bought Seem like they were made by some private machine shop or something becuase they don't look like the same ones in the picture at GENMAR's site.

I work in a machine shop and before I installed these risers, I measured them up and I think I could recreate something similar. The ones I got came off of a SV1000 they were actually pretty tight fitting on my bike, so the ones I will make. I will open up the clearence holes so they will fit a little better. Anyway I am not positive how much $ it would cost me to make them yet but I am pretty sure I can make these at a better price, and quality than ebay. They would be grit blasted then clear coated, since I do not have easy access to a place that will do anodize, and anodize would push up the $ a bit. You would have to reuse your stock Top clamp, and I would not be able to send the longer Brakline with it. I found on my bike 2004 1200s I was able to unbolt the junction block for the front brakelines attached to the forks to get the slack I needed to put the bars on. I would suggest buying the longer lines though. My junction block is just flopping around until I can fabricate a new mount higher up. Anyway how many are interested in these risers, so I know if it is worth it to make a program down in the shop.

I have actually been working on them this whole time. I have been trying to squeeze it into my work schedule. I am expirimenting with different angles and rise height. The ones I bought put the ends of the handlebars dangerously close to the tank, so I am trying to avoid that by changing a few dimensions. So far unsuccesful, and with all this rain I am losing a whole day inbetween prototypes, becuase I can't even ride in to work. I have to bring them home each night to try them out. I have also been working on a way to slot the holes to make them adjustable, but the problem being the locating hub on the bottom holds them in place, and I would have to make that able to slide as well. For saftey concerns I am just going to make solid with no adjustments. I might dabble with this again later on.

So anyway there is definately a lot of R&D going into these little things. I have a bit of a problem with perfection.

At this point it looks like the first batch of these risers will cost somewhere around $70- $80. I realize this is not a lot cheaper than Genmar, but it is a little better. I should be able to make them cheaper the 2nd time around once the machine is all programmed and set to go, and I have the raw mat. Also If you guys can commit to a group buy I might be able to do it a little cheaper as well. I am going into it A$$es and Elbows this Sat. so hopfully I will have the first few sets done within the next couple weeks. I am sorry for the delay guys, I am doing my best with the time and resources I have. Just hang tight, and hopfully we might be onto something here.

If you wanted to make them adjustable and keep the hump that fits into the lower half of the bar mount bar cutout, you could make them two-piece and locate the hump with serrations to keep it in place.

I realize this would add to the expense, but just an idea to throw out there.

BTW, Red01 - I noticed a couple of weeks ago you said you ride with high beams on and I've been doing it ever since. No scientific poll, but I don't think anyone has cut me off in that time! Seems to work great. Thanks for the tip.

Don't know about the 3G's, like yours, but on the 2G it also keeps people from telling you that one of your headlights is burned out if you ride around on low beam.

I put a set of GS1150 bars on the Bandit. These have 2" more rise, pullback and width than stock, so a longer set of brakelines would ordinarily be needed. You can work around this by mounting the hydraulic cylinders about 1" inboard of the grips instead of up snug against them, but you still need a longer line for the front brakes. Sorry!

I had a set of generic 70s vintage risers on one of my KZ900 carb test bikes... they rise 2" or so and come back about the same. I stripped off the old black paint and polished the aluminum a tad and then clear coated it. The offset between mount bolts on the old risers is about 1/16" less than on the Bandit so I opened up the hole that the lower front mount bolt goes in with a carbide cutter on a Dremmel tool and sanded it to make it look OK. I used stainless 8mm x 1.25 pitch socket head bolts (I think they were 30 or 35mm long) for the three bolts that can be seen and used the original Grade 8 for the longer one that is hidden. (There are two bolts holding the riser one. Only the one in the front can be seen as the bar is directly over the second). The brake lines were all long enough as well as the wires off the right switchgear but the left switchgear wires needed to be rerouted a tad. The riding position is MUCH better. I think these risers were originally called "bar backs" and can be had on eBay pretty reasonable usually.

The ones in this ebay auction are SIMILAR to the ones I used except mine have the 1/2 moon cut outs on the bottom to marry into the receivers on the triple clamps.

Why mess with risers? It's just more pieces and parts to bolt on.

There's so many different shapes and sizes of handlebars available, just find a bar that fits the way you want and replace the old one.

Go to the dealer andbuy a pair of stock bar clamps. Turn them upside down and place them under the bars over the existing bottom half of the original bar clamps. I did it for my 1250ABS. 7/8 inch rise. Had to sand down half millimeters to get a better grip on the bars. $32. Over price for a pair of bar clamps. Got the 20mm longer bolts from McMAster Carr catalog. Make sure you don't use soft metal bolts.
