Title: Tires??????? sorry everyone
Post by: mattydefran on June 13, 2006, 10:20:49 AM
Hi Everybody,

I realize this topic has probably been kicked to death, but I am in a bind don't have much time to scan the archives so I have to ask. I need tires for my b12s. This will be my first new set of tires. I only got 3,500 mi. out of the factory michelins. What is the best tire considering all factors. I want a sport touring tire that will last a while but doesn't sacrafice too much handling. Oh yeah and it has to be Cheap!!!!

:toofunny:

I think I am kinda dreaming, but I would like to hear what you all think

Thanks
Matt

From what I've gathered on here, you want Shinko 009s if you're looking for cheap, sport-touring, with decent life.  People also often mention the Avon ST45 and ST46 for a very long-lasting sport-tour tire, though I don't know the price.  The Shinkos are remarkably cheap, IIRC.

Did you even look in the whole section devoted to tires?

If you got 3500 miles out of the stock tires and they were worn out, you're probably not gonna get much better mileage out of any other ST type tire. You can get tires that'll last as long as the stockers and handle better. If you want more mileage, the Metzeler ME880 Marathon touring tires are made in the B12's sizes. AFAIK, that's the only tire that's going to get you more mileage out of your tires.

I don't know how some of you guys do it though... you must ride a LOT harder than I do, or your roads are total crap. I'm getting 10K miles out of ST tires and I don't wear 'em down to the cord. I do wear them down to the wear bars though.

Yep... Shinkos.

You could go with the Shinko Advance 005 (sport tire) or the Raven 009 (sport-touring)

Both should give you really good mileage, and they can't be beat for the price.   I have the 005's  - and will probably get them again.

Best price is here:

No experience with the Shinkos, but from what the people here that have used them lead me to believe, the 009 is gonna last about as long as a Pilot Road, Azarro, Strada or Z6 - which last about as long as a stock tire. (All seem to be a better choice handling wise to the stock tires.)

I run the Pirelli Diablo Strata's on Metzler Z-6's and love them. They cost more than the Shinko's and less than the Avon's.

what about the Bridgestones BT020 s for the B6.. ? These are the ones suggested to be the same as the OEM tires that my 01 B6 had (BT56s).

I'm not recommending anything one way or the other...only mentioning that when I was studying ALL the tire threads on this site I noticed a lot of good responses about Metzeler Z6 Roadtecs (as well as others mentioned above).

Again, I'm not suggesting you buy them.  I only noticed others on this board speaking positively about them.

Buy whatever works best for you price vs. performance-wise.

Not sure about OEM's but did you see the prices from PaulVS's post re that company's deals?  $50 for a very good tire!  Man, that is an incredible deal!!  Last time I checked on half decent tires for my little cruiser they were $120 (each) in Canada.  Had to go through the US of A.

And those things HAVE to be better than OEM.

Yeah... a decent price but the bastages put up retail (HD) outlets in Texas and now you have to add sales tax  :rant2:  :rant2:   Just ordered another Shinko rear this week - the tax was only 5 bucks but still, a mere four months ago it wasn't that way.

Sheese..... 4 months and I need a new tire????   Something is horrible wrong or absolutely right with that.

On Bandits, the OEM tires are not that great. Since you say yours are Bridgestones, I'm guessing yours is a 1G bike, if so, there's been a couple (or more) generations of tire advancements since those tires came out.

I got 12,000 out of the oem Bridgestones, and 13,000 out of the first replacement set of 054's.  I've got a set of Conti Road Attacks on now with 5,000 on them and they look like they will go 10 - 12K as well?  B12 30K and going strong!

I'm with you Daytona - I don't know how people get the milage out of tyres that they do.

The best I've managed out of a rear tyre is 12,000km (7,400 miles) from the original Macadams (90x).

From the Metzler M1 got 7000km (4,300miles), but that was really pushing it past it's use by date - realistically I only got 5000km (3100miles).

From the Metzler ZE4 I got 8000km (4900miles).

I've now gone back to Macadams (100x) on the rear, it's got 2000km on it and hardly looks used.

So I'm on my 4th rear tyres in less than 30,000km (18,600 miles).  But I'm only on my 3rd front - mind you it'll be due for replacement in a few thousand K's.

  Damn,I have cords showing on my Qualifier I put on this yr befor the rally. I have another 50 miles to go befor I hit 3000 miles. And it wasn't cheap either. But it did stick good. I think I might get another Conti,I have a used front road attack,  and now a front Qualifier.but I still didn't get that much more out of the Conti,I have it written down in my manual somewhere. I think maybe 3500-4k out of the back. I could put it back on for maybe a couple of weeks and it would probably show cords too.              Dan

And my 208 GPs for the track don't last as long as the Qualifiers. I still have to get some track time in so I can burn those up too.  Dan

Hey Smooth! The crew that you rode with on the last Boss trip said you are a darn good rider! I was wondering why you don't give the stinko's a try? You could put some doubts to rest that some have about them being up to you knee dragger type's needs. I would almost guarantee you wouldn't be sorry.     But don't try this at home. Closed track with pro rider.   :beers:  :beers:

When I first tried out the shinko a few years back now, I was a full time motorcycle courier in Melb Oz, Tried the 009 rear and have never even thought of using anything ever since, rain hail and shine. Now with the ZRX im using the 005 and only because i could not get supplied with the 009. But having said that I do like the 005 front. Great mileage and great stick, but one needs to keep the tyre pressures up. On the b6 36 psi front 40 rear. The Rex 42 rear 38 front

I believe the Bandit 600 has Bridgestone's as OEM tires.

Either way.... all stock Bandit tires suck eel slime.

My old 05 B12 that I sold to my brother in law (that way I get to visit the B12 regular and somtimes even ride it ) now has just on 7500 miles on the OEM Macadams and the rear has just now started to handle a bit off due to it becoming squared off.  The front still looks great and should do at least another 5000.

I think he is going to replace both at the same time and I believe that he is going to try the shinko brand.  He does more commuting than touring so I think he should try to 005's.  I will let you lnow how he goes.

Not a good choice from what i've heard! The 005's is more of a sport type! the 009's is what the commuter needs. He will get over 8k on the rear and stick as good as any! :bigok:  :beers:

Hey "willo" Graham! Ok try em but after you find out that they are as good or better than most of the HI $ Spread!! Don't talk em up much please. They have been inching up in price here lately!! The 009 that i will run on my Bandit (on steroids) look the 190 is as wide as the 200 014 B.S. next to it!!!  009's for great mileage, 005 for the twisty road rider, 003's for the drag strip or track!

Good call on the tires... but they are cheaper at the place Daytona & I recommended... Ridenow.com

005 - 120/70/ZR17 = 54.99
009 - 180/55/ZR17 = 79.99
Subtotal = 134.98

Why did you go with Tire express?

After searching and seeing higher quotes on my favorite online vendors I thought it was the best price with shipping. But I must admit that the neurons in my brain fired late and  realized that I should have solicited a price from board members before popping the clutch. I will certainly check with my online brothers in the future, thank you. However in this case although the subtotal looks great you forgot to mention $20 shipping and $13 sales tax which brings the price up to  $168, still $20 is nothing to sneeze at and at least 2 twelve packs of beer 8^D.

O, fer sher! You're dreaming when it comes to "cheap". The only 'tars' that resemble that remark are the Cheng Shins from J.C. Whitless, and I while this is not intended to be a disparagement of that product or the company that sells it, it soitingly is an indication that no one I know has ever tried them. Well, those tires are the cheapest, but I bought Metzler ME-Z4's 3 years ago for my '99 Bandit.

All I can say is WOW! They have over 6,000 miles on them and the only discernable wear is on the rear 'tar', where a 2" wide flat spot is evident in the center of the 'tar', caused by lots of slow (fer the Bandit, that is) cruising in group rides in FL on mostly straight roads. No canyons to carve around hyar! But the best part is the vast improvement in handling over the OEM Bridgestones, and looking at the wear, it seems as if these balloons will last a lot longer than 12K I got out of the original equipment.

That's my opinion; your mileage may vary.

Herb
