Ok, I know I'm getting old when I have to ask........

Any suggestions on "winter" cold weather pants? I don't want to spend a fortune, but if I do I want to be able to wear them ALL year round.

So I either need a pair of cheap but WARM and PROJECTIVE pants just for Winter - are a more expensive pair that I can wear when it's -5 or +35.

How cold of weather do you ride in?
I just wear long underwear or sweat pants under my leather pants in the winter, but I don't ride in freezing weather because it's too wet here and I don't want to risk ice patches.

If that's not enough for you, there's always heated pant liners such as Gerbing - but they aren't exactly inexpensive at US$199.

Just remembering the dramas with the leather jacket, perhaps something with stretch lycra might be the go. Or you could just move to God's country, Queensland.

Go and get some dry Rider gear Mick.
I know Melbourne gets quite cold but probably on a par with most of NZ. The majority of people in the &Ulysses club in Auckland use Dry Rider pants and top.
I'm a bit of a cheepskate and like Red, use long johns under my draggin jeans when its not raining and the same but with a chep $35 pair of over trousers

Yep Dririder stuff isn't bad, but BMW riding gear is the ducks guts...you just have to buy it in the middle of summer - or you will pay through the nose

Actually I'm riding in Draggin Jeans at the moment, and it's about 7 or 8 degrees when I set off for work at 7:30am on a cold morning, they are not too bad - they are quite thick which helps I think.

I've already got the DriRider jacket, but most of the pants I've looked at have been either beyond my budget or are plain crap...

I ride all year round in anything from -5C to +40C and thermal underwear and track pants under the leathers just doesn't do it for me anymore....

Anyway, a mate of mine is the local supplier for Torini Leathers and can do me a good price $195.00 for a pair of 'DriRider' style pants, with armour and removable liner....so that's what I'll probably get. However I am going to save the pennies and invest in one the new DriRider "offroader" jackets....it's three jackets in one, but is a bit pricey at $350.00

Hey Mick,
I'm up in Canberra and have been getting away with thermal long-johns, Draggin jeans and waterproof overpants for the wind. Rides over an hour or so and you start to feel it in your knees but generally OK.
The Dririder winter pants were not worth the cash for what you get, the draggin jeans give more protection. The deal you're getting sounds pretty good though.
My main problem is keeping the hands warm!

The hands aren't a problem, winter gloves (with a rain proof over mitten) and thermal under gloves courtesy of Mr Davidson are plenty. The feet aren't too much a problem either, pure wool socks do wonders. As for the upper body, DriRider Jacket and a fleecy jumper are great.

As I said I have been using Thermal underwear and Track pants under the leather pants - but that's just not cutting it anymore in the comort stakes - I must be getting old or something.

First Gear HT Overpants. They have a Thinsulate liner that's removable. Padding in hips and on knees. Waterproof too.

I wore them at 25 deg. Fahrenheit and the only things that were cold were my face and hands.

Mick you have all the gear you need but two items mate.
Let you in on a secret of mine for years and years.
Best part mate is that the cost is about two tenths of F all.
No you dont have to wear womens undergarments.
Go check out your local op shops for bib and brace ski pants, the padded parker material ones work best. The other is the one piece ski suit same material. Midddle of Melb winter mate I ride around all day with jocks t-shirt one piece ski suit leather pants and dririder jacket. Warm and toasty, and even when you get soaked the stuff in the ski suit still keeps you warm.

I think my bib and brace cost me $15, and the one piece $25.
And because the material is silky it slides inside your leathers and jacket and does not bind up causing restristed movement.

also it does not bag up and therefor remains comfortable at all times.
My one piece siut even has one of those hoods, in Melb's worst I use it, helps keep the back of the neck dry and it does actually keep the head warmer.

Its only when the temp remains in single figures all day that I trade the jocks and t-shirt for thermals. For comfort and warmth I aint found nothing better.

Mick I wear a pair of dri rider typhoon pants and mate there the best.Got caught in 900km of freezing bloody cold, driving rain and hail from cobar to adelaide last winter.All the way couldn't stop had to be back for work on monday.They didn't let a drop in and kept me warm the whole way.

Under your leather jeans and dririder jacket, can only be as good as your leathers and dririder for protection.
As for protection for the cold and wet, as good as any other Ive tried, the thing is it dont matter if they get wet, soaked in fact, you still remain warm, and there is the secret to surviving a long wet ride, both mentally and physically. The other big plus is the comfort which I have already made mention.

Come on you guys, there is no such thing!

I would recomend the Newfoundland fishermans gear. Fits nice over leathers and has wool nect liner.

Great for Sept. Motorcycle rides in Canada.

You're right, now anyway. Winter is almost done and dusted, early spring can still be a bit cool, but all in all the days are warming up, and now the thoughts turn to "How do I keep cool, but safe" I;ve already got that covered. Draggin Jeans and Jacket - wonderful stuff.
