Title: Approving New Members - Please read
Post by: stormi on December 19, 2008, 11:52:18 AM
A big hello to the new prospective members!

Due to a huge influx of spammers, we've set up authentication of new users.  This means that an admin -must- approve your account.

Now,.. sometimes it's hard to tell a valid email account from a non-valid, and every once in a while, we manage to kill an account that shouldn't be.  I'll apologize in advance if we end up getting you in this process, but we are human.

To lower the likelihood that your email account be mistaken for a spammer, I'd like to ask that you do one thing for us, and in turn, we'll do one thing for you.

If you:

Send an email reply to the signup message that you get, you will be activated as soon as we see it.

In turn, we will:

When rejecting a new account, reject it, but also send an email that says such.  That way, your account won't just be deleted with you still sitting there waiting for it to be activated.  If you should receive this email message, it's nothing personal, we just didn't realise that you were a human, not a spammer/bot.  Please make contact as above, and let us know.

Additionally, any accounts not activated by the user ( the second step of the registration) within 7 days will be deleted.

One thing that helps us know if you're a human with a genuine interest in the site is if you fill out more than the required fields of the registration, especially if it includes a little info on your ride.

Alright, Two new things here.

We now have access to a site (http://stopforumspam.com) that allows us to check IP addresses (for the uninitiated: this is like your postal address but for your computer on the internet.  It's unique to you, and assigned by your internet provider) against a database of known spammers.

If you've registered to the forums, and either:
or
Your registration will be rejected with no further notice to you.

If your IP address hits our site with more than one registration, and has appeared in the spam database, it will be blocked from accessing the site at all.

Just a heads up to new prospective members..........

Please check your e-mails for our activation response!!!!

There are a lot of you that need to respond so we can activate your account.  Some are several weeks old and are legit member applications (AFAWCT) but if we don't hear from you the account will be deleted.

Rarely do we go more than 72 hours from your application to approval - check your spam folders and help us out.

Your Friendly Neighborhood B/A Admin Team

Past time for our yearly reminder to all prospective new member applications.  There have been a few administrative glitches with new member approvals over the past year but they have been largely resolved.  We continue to manually review all applications and that can take a few days as noted above.  We'd like to take this opportunity to let you know what to expect on future approvals - although not much has changed.

All new members should receive some type of email notification within +/- 72 hours of registering UNLESS your email address has been flagged as a known spammer.

This email will tell you to either activate your account or that you've been initially rejected due to any number of reasons.  If you get this rejection notice and still wish to become a member you can reply via email.  We will accommodate your request as soon as possible - be patient.

You will be required to activate your account - this does not automatically occur.

If you haven't received anything from us in one week be sure to check your spam folders for correspondence from Bandit Alley...

Thanks for your cooperation.  :thumb:
