Need some help
« on: May 10, 2008, 07:02:08 PM »
My bike is doing a couple of crazy things. Sometimes it works great and others not so good.

Symptoms:

Tack is going crazy. Readings are all over the place and the needle is bouncing around.

Stalls when not on the throttle

Bike is starting to miss.

Is it a rectifier or CDI box or both or should I just burn the damn thing?

cdi seems a possibility. check what volts its giving you at the battery first though. And also the connections to the coils and plugs.

Test the RR  Put a meter across the battery and rev to 5k. I think you want around 15v. Much more or much less and the RR is bad. (suzuki RR's from that time period are known to be crap, gs500's run the same RR if you want to try swapping it).

Also what Rob said. The 12v wires to the coils get take quite a bit of damage shaking around at highway speeds.... idle the bike and jiggle those wires and see if it stalls.. then you know which wires to re-crimp. Or figure out which pipes are getting hot and narrow it down to what coils has a problem...

I've got spare coils here if you want to try swapping them.

Keep us posted and stay away from the matches!!

If nothing works and you're desperate you can trailer your bike over and swap the CDI with mine... I've got nice big underground garage you can test it in...

low battery voltage tac goes nuts i run total lose and this is the first thing that happens when my bat gets low you need to have your battery load tested as well as check the charging voltage and make sure the connector to the reg/ reg is tight and not metled.
