Title: cam chain rattle?
Post by: but bandit on September 22, 2007, 11:24:49 AM
Hi guys

I think my bike has developed a cam chain rattle, it sounds quite mettalic, like a chain rattling and it comes and goes. sometimes when i stop at traffic lights its rattling, sometimes it isnt, and sometimes it is but then stops. sound like anything familiar?

do you still sell manual cam chain tensioners gsxr400racer?

any help/advice appreciated.

the cam chain on my bike is noisy too, i need to do something about it.

is it very hard to adjust yourself or should i leave it in to a mechanic?

and wats the deal with these manual tensioners?

thanks.

Could be the clutch too. Put the bike in neutral, start the engine and listen. If it's the clutch it goes away when you pull the clutchlever.

the stock one adjusts by it self the manual one well i dont have to explain that they are fairly simple.  if its your clutch when you pull the clutch in it will quit up! when you let it out you hear noise

Sounds like the rattle my Bandit developed which was, indeed, the cam chain. I ordered a manual tensioner from Jay (thanks again Jay   ) and fitted it last weekend and it's done the job beautifully.

hey guys, i just got an auto adjust one and fitted it today, did the job a beaut! except the little rubber bung thingy got dropped never to be seen again! so i covered the hole with a bit of gaffa tape and the dude at my bike shop says he'll have a rustle around and see if he can find a bung that will do the job.

thanks anyway though gsxr400racer, it probably wouldve been cheaper to buy one off you, my one cost £60 + vat.

no problem mine is really for when you stetch the chain past the auto tensioner as the chain will still be in spec but the auto tensioner will only go so far and my manual one goes out further so if you happen to hear the noise again look me up.
cheers
jay

its not the clutch, its the cam chain.  i didnt know the standard one adjusted itself, i thought u had to get it adjusted/tightened at regular intervals?  i also thought this was a very complicated thing to do?
